TRA on twitter tweeting a Mumsnet advertiser, saying Mumsnet is transphobic and tweeting opinion pieces at the the advertiser Audible.

"We absolutely support and believe in trans rights, thanks for bringing this to our attention, we're going to look into this."

I looked for a thread, if there is one already let me know and i'll ask for this to be deleted for being a duplicate.

I daresay any marketing twonk with half a brain will catch on to these pitchfork Twitter mobs, see who is organising them and why and ... give a response like Arla's. A polite 'no, ta'.

EmpressLangClegInChair · 13/05/2020 06:29

Potato potato potato worked for Birdseye.

DickKerrLadies · 13/05/2020 07:43

Oh this again?

Like when they tried to tell dairy farmers that believing that males and females are different is an example of bigoted hatred?

Hi Helen! Thanks for the free advertising - I do like it when we get new people coming over to see what's going on. The sunlight's lovely.

Lordfrontpaw · 13/05/2020 08:21

Some people really do just want to rule the world.

MingeofDeath · 13/05/2020 09:33

Perhaps by saying lads, they are speaking to the TRAs? The complaints might have come from them.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 13/05/2020 09:44

Well, I and many others will never give Audible a single penny again if the cave. Website with millions of mostly quite well educated users versus anime avatars and people who seem to do nothing but target advertisers on Twitter - which group do you think is likely to spend more on Audible? Do the math, peeps.

(Also doing whatever randoms tell you to on Twitter is just a bad look in general, especially if you don't do a bit of research into the complainer's history first, which would bring up that unsuccessful lawsuit.)

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 13/05/2020 09:46

As happy as I was with the response to that particular incident I can't help but feel that a perfect opportunity to post "Off to milk our bulls, who wants to sign up for some BullSkyre?" was missed.

Z0rr0 · 13/05/2020 09:54

@NotTerfNorCis @R0wantrees I missed what happened on Graham's thread. Why was it taken down? I don't understand.
Someone on Twitter said that it was because women had complained that Graham shouldn't be in the fight for women's rights because he's a man? It suggests that regular Feminist Chat readers / writers complained about it.
'Lads' is weird. Very Buzzfeed.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 13/05/2020 10:01

It suggests that regular Feminist Chat readers / writers complained about it

I don’t think it suggests that at all

Z0rr0 · 13/05/2020 10:37

@RufustheLanglovingreindeer I literally have no idea. I'm just saying that was the claim made by someone on Twitter about why the thread was removed.

Z0rr0 · 13/05/2020 10:37

Wah, was supposed to include the pic.

This thread is about TRAs targeting Mumsnet advertisers.

Freespeecher · 13/05/2020 11:05

Going forward, do you think this approach will be frowned on generally rather than in this particular instance?

Voting with one's wallet is one thing, but this can go on to being used to shut down dissenting views if you're not careful.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 13/05/2020 11:09

Oh I understand the claim bit z0...wouldnt argue with that

Im just not sure of the logic that its FWR regulars reporting because he is a man

From what i see on here glinner is tolerated

Z0rr0 · 13/05/2020 11:39

Apologies @R0wantrees I was just responding as you'd mentioned it. But you're right.
Thanks @RufustheLanglovingreindeer

Datun · 13/05/2020 11:54

Going forward, do you think this approach will be frowned on generally rather than in this particular instance?

I think it will be. I believe it already is, in fact.

The entire world is waking up to the strong arm tactics of trans-activists. You can't avoid hearing about it, it's broken through into mainstream.

It's gone from people thinking, God not this again, stop shoving it down our throats, to actively feeling confident to ignore them entirely, or telling them to bog off.

Freespeecher · 13/05/2020 12:00

Datun
Thanks for the reply, but it was more about groups of all kinds looking to win by shutting down the opposition rather than relying on strength of argument (which of course can then backfire and cause a rise in sales for companies that find themselves in the crosshairs of attempted boycotts).

Maybe one for the 'broader issues' thread.

Datun · 13/05/2020 12:09

Freespeecher

I can distinctly remember, in the US, in the 1980s, when I first saw adverts which would disparage competitors' products, rather than relying on the advantages of their own.

And yes, it does give the overall impression that the product can't speak for itself.

Lordfrontpaw · 13/05/2020 13:36

I really haven't the patience to look on twitter to see what the children are trying to do to Audible. Can someone let me know when/if I cancel my sub?

I won't support spineless wonders.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 13/05/2020 13:37

It's gone from people thinking, God not this again, stop shoving it down our throats, to actively feeling confident to ignore them entirely, or telling them to bog off.

It feels like the tipping point was passed without most of us noticing, and we're now in the questioning of the TRA narrative tentatively allowed stage (less tentatively in spaces not dominated by people who particularly care about being right on).

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 13/05/2020 13:39

I remember watching those ads with my mum, Datun, both of us going "wait, that's allowed?" and also "not very convincing is it?"

PegasusReturns · 13/05/2020 13:46

Companies who stand up to bullies and refuse to capitulate seem to do better.

The use of “lads” is likely an Irish colloquialism - it’s used there in an entirely gender neutral fashion.

FannyCann · 13/05/2020 14:05

For anyone looking to cancel Audible try Librivox.
It's a charity, with readers from around the world. Free audiobooks, very easy to use. Download the app.
The standard of reading is very high, I suspect many of the readers are looking for voice over work.
Some of the more popular books have been read by several readers so you can listen and choose one you like.
I listened to Lady Audley's Secret and really enjoyed it, my DH overheard bits and commented that the American reader couldn't do British accents but I found it mildly amusing and she's a very good reader so it didn't spoil my enjoyment. I also listened to Uncle Tom's Cabin which I had never read. I think it works really well as an audiobook as the racist language has a shock power when hearing it out loud over and above when reading the written word.

Also, for anyone still bored in lockdown, if you are a good reader - how about volunteering? I'd like to see some more feminist books on there.

See how they go I suppose.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 13/05/2020 14:17

I'd at least give Audible the chance to potentially respond in a sensible way.
