I’ve heard this statement from a few people over the past year or so, always from men.
I know they’re wrong but I so rarely know how to tell them they’re wrong.
I want to tell them they’re wrong without patronising them because it is my belief that once you do this, you alienate your audience and they won’t ever come around to your way of thinking.

What do you say to this statement??

Male bees just basically sit round, however if they do achieve their biological destiny their phallus rips off and stays in the queen and they die.

This threads gone odd. There's quite a bit of testeria I think

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/05/2020 08:48

Always happens when someone says no, that. And now I want to read more strange and gruesome animal stories, though possibly best not to mention bats at the moment.

Justhadathought · 06/05/2020 09:59

Again, the best way to deal with the same tired MRA arguments that you've been seeing for at least a decade (centuries in some cases) is not to engage at all. Obviously I can't make anyone do that, and shouldn't be able to, but I can keep gently suggesting it in the hopes of returning this to a space that's worth being in

If you don't like it, then don't visit. Seems to me you simply cannot tolerate any divergence of view. On top of that a large percentage of your posts are simply disparaging comments, personal insult and insinuation, and just general smug superiority. And that is across many threads, from my observation. You seem to find some kind virtue in that. Perhaps it is you rebelling against docile female stereotypes......showing that women can be every bit as unpleasant, hostile and nasty as the best of them. We see you.

That's not the sort of space many of us appreciate......, so why not create a thread of your own and make it exclusive membership - to your pals, only? Then those willing for an open conversation and sharing of ideas and perspectives can get on with it.

Just for you kittens - the weird and wonderful hyena pseudophallus

Or how about the surinam toad, which broods its eggs on it's back, then they hatch in the manner of spots exploding

QuentinWinters · 06/05/2020 10:15

I love biology. Nature has evolved some very odd creatures

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/05/2020 10:16

Because the male hyena must insert his penis into the female hyena’s pseudopenis in a long, complicated process, rape of the female hyena is physically impossible.

??! And that's before you imagine trying to give birth through something penis shaped. I feel like the darker reaches of the internet must contain people writing smut based on this, because Rule 34.

QuentinWinters · 06/05/2020 10:17

I'm pretty sure there is a whole genre of fanfic based on this on a03. Fell down a rabbit hole after a fanficbased chat on here years ago.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/05/2020 10:18

I once saw this process happen IRL, but with spiders. Can't say I'd recommend it! Though sure, nature is amazing, etc. 8 year old me described it to my classmates as "there was a spider on our stairs and then it exploded".

Gronky · 06/05/2020 10:19

Justhadathought, I'm reminded of the (possibly fictional) decree by Caliph Omar on the library of Alexandria: 'If these books contradict the Qur'an, they are blasphemous and are to be burned. If they agree with the Qur'an they are superfluous and are also to be burned.'

Justhadathought · 06/05/2020 10:19

Yeh! Feminist Fight Club...featuring the cat ladies. Beats Bake-off hands down.

QuentinWinters · 06/05/2020 10:21

Parasitic fungus that turns ants into zombies? www.google.com/amp/s/api.nationalgeographic.com/distribution/public/amp/animals/2019/04/cordyceps-zombie-fungus-takes-over-ants

I'll stop now Grin

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/05/2020 10:23

Zombie ants. WTF, nature?

I think you are now being "sent to Coventry" by some here:

To send someone to Coventry is an English idiom meaning to deliberately ostracise someone. Typically, this is done by not talking to them, avoiding their company, and acting as if they no longer exist. Victims are treated as though they are completely invisible and inaudible.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Send_to_Coventry

Childish playground tactics, and a form of bullying. It always gives me the shivers to see it.

RabidChinchilla · 06/05/2020 10:36

Although I'm trying not to be drawn into the ant equivalent of baking recipes, I feel toxoplasma is worth a mention. It 'reprograms' rats to be unafraid of cats so that they get eaten and can breed in the cat (only feline hosts allow full reproduction of the parasite, which is then shat out to be eaten by more rats).

Best bit is that up to 50% of the world's human population now has it and we recently discovered it can manipulate human behaviour too.

Pertella · 06/05/2020 10:37

Apparently clownfish can literally change sex!

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/05/2020 10:39

Fish are incredibly weird, from a human perspective. Fascinating but weird.

I never actually knew it meant this, and it's definitely something I've seen a lot on here.

It only sounds slightly better than being actually sent to Coventry!

kesstrel · 06/05/2020 10:44

Poor old Coventry does take quite a bashing. Apparently the phrase is very old though, thought to have originated in the 1600s

HorseRadishFemish · 06/05/2020 10:49

To be fair that's me you're describing not prodkit..

RabidChinchilla · 06/05/2020 10:50

I was wondering if it was a wartime reference about parents sending their kids away to safety (obv a bit illogical now I consider that Cov was one of the worst bombed areas).

HorseRadishFemish · 06/05/2020 10:51

... and just general smug superiority

Gawd! It's like you know me IRL.

QuentinWinters · 06/05/2020 10:54

That's interesting about toxoplasmosis rabid.

TinselAngel · 06/05/2020 11:03

I just spent five minutes wondering how rats eaten by cats, can survive inside the cat and start breeding.

It's like the old woman who swallowed a fly.
