Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Woah, the accepting of male and female chromosomes on the BBC!

Blow me down with a feather. I’m listening to the BBC’s global podcast covering Coronavirus and they are covering a scientific report that discusses why males are more susceptible to the virus than women and that’s because the female has two chromosomes from each parent and the male, just the one.

So in a global pandemic we’re allowed to talk about biological sex and the fact that we are indeed different? No pronoun jibber jabber, just hardcore facts.

Nearly fell off my chair.

Just shows that they can talk sense when they have to, when it involves science involving pandemics. However, I fear that it won't be long before they are talking about clownfish and the like.

I0NA · 11/04/2020 11:17

But what about the jelly baby spectrum? Are the BBC literally erasing the thousands of possible genders ?

It’s almost as science matters 🤭

Pertella · 11/04/2020 11:19

Yes, but a Y chromosome can just be an X with a leg missing. Are you saying that 1 legged people arent humans, huh?

Ableist AND transphobic

SarahTancredi · 11/04/2020 11:20

Crikey....

Sex finally matters for something.. will their be an apology?

ChocAuVin · 11/04/2020 11:21

I’d remarked the same to myself!

Funny how science suddenly matters Smile

justanotherneighinparadise · 11/04/2020 11:23

And saying the word ‘woman’ as though we were actually a chromosome defined sex!!!!

OP posts:
SarahTancredi · 11/04/2020 11:25

Let's not kid ourselves though hey

It only matters cos more men are dying...

Someone tweet this to JF though cos apparently women arent pulling h their weight and that's why more men are dying

R0wantrees · 11/04/2020 11:30

10/4/2020 Janice Turner for The Times
'Coronavirus exposes gulf between the sexes
There’s a cruel irony in the fact that men, for all their superior strength, are dying in greater numbers than women'

(extract)
"And in a pandemic that double X is a true blessing: one X chromosome in a cell can spot the invading virus, while the other X works on killing cells that are infected already. With just a single X and a weedier Y, men lack that double-barrelled protection. Moreover, higher levels of testosterone in men, says Dr Moalem, repress the immune system, while oestrogen stimulates it.

How extraordinary that it took Covid-19 to expose the absurdity of an utterly unscientific argument gaining mainstream traction, and posed as recently as the Labour leadership election, that biological sex is not real but an artificial construct, randomly “assigned” to babies at birth. In fact, sex is coded in our very cells and, as this epidemic reveals, can affect our odds for life or death.

Yet despite these stark differences there has been a paucity of sex aggregated data to help fight the virus and find a possible cure. The Lancet argues this week that “obscuring sex and gender differences in treatment and vaccine development could result in harm”. In Invisible Women, the author Caroline Criado Perez exposed how the default patient in medical research is invariably male, as women with their variable hormone levels are thought to skew data. As Dr Moalem writes: “The medical establishment has largely overlooked the profound chromosomal, hormonal and anatomical uniqueness of genetic females.”

Already, The Lancet notes, the lockdown burdens of impoverishment, housework, care for children and the elderly have fallen disproportionately upon women, while there has been a global rise in domestic violence. But the virus itself is killing more men and this male fragility is a terrifying shock."

No Sarah, it’s only cis women who aren’t pulling their weight. Trans women are out there working as intensive care nurses, anaesthetists, hospital cleaners, emergency dentists, retail workers, bin collectors, delivery drivers, ambulance crew and utility company workers.

They are not all sitting at home tweeting, flicking their hair and being brave and stunning.

They are keeping the country running.

Or something like that.

SarahTancredi · 11/04/2020 11:36

Oh yes cos we are all at home too busy lying about our ages

Its funny how when Male lives are at stake we collect sex aggregated data.

SarahTancredi · 11/04/2020 11:45

Oh yes wonder

Their response to my complaint regarding not using the word woman when talking about the detrimental effects of period poverty fell on deaf ears... cant think why

twoHopes · 11/04/2020 11:57

Its funny how when Male lives are at stake we collect sex aggregated data.

Quite. I'm sure if there were more women dying of this we would see a lot of people shrugging their shoulders and saying "huh... I guess women are just weaker than men". But when it looks like men are more likely to die we must get to the bottom of it.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/04/2020 12:14

Not just the BBC either. I noted Nicola Sturgeon talking about death rates by sex rather than gender the other day...

StealthPolarBear · 11/04/2020 12:20

Yep I'd spotted this too. I'm guessing TW are feeling happy that they've lowered their risk with a wig, some lipstick and telling anyone who'll listen about sitting down to wee.
Clearly the virus must agree that TWAW, right?

CodenameVillanelle · 11/04/2020 12:25

The app developed to track self reported data on covid 19 started off asking for people's sex then changed it to assigned at birth after pressure from trans activists.

SarahTancredi · 11/04/2020 12:35

Funny how they want to legally lie and pressure everyone to cave then still blame everyone else for health care being shocking.

Well the truth is necessary for any medical care. Even if that truth hurts someone.like you cheated or you lied about where you were .what you ate or drank or took. Truth is vital. You cant hide from reality no matter how hard you want to.

I thought the comments below the Janice Turner article were very odd. Male and female physiology are different we all know that and so medical and surgical approaches need to be different. Its not a battle of the apexes but if different responses are being noted we need to understand why.

Completely unrelated but kind of, I was watching something on Netflix called 100 humans and they have a group of 100 people split them up by sex or age for example to see which group performed better in certain scenarios and if some stereotypes hold true. When they did the male/ female one someone in the group said "what about other genders" so they said okay people who identify as male here and people who identify as female here, and the response was "Yay trans acceptance". DH and I just looked at each other like 🤨

Freespeecher · 11/04/2020 12:48

Coronavirus is the first time I've heard about women being better at fighting viruses than men because of their XX chromosomes (don't know if this was generally known before the current outbreak).

Does it follow that men are disproportionately affected by all viruses or does it depend on the virus in question?

HennyPenny4 · 11/04/2020 12:53

Start the week on Monday on Radio 4 discussed this
www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000h2c0

Women have better immunity to all viruses from what I gather!

terryleather · 11/04/2020 12:53

Material reality bites luxury beliefs in the ass.

I'd love to think this new state of affairs will be permanent but I'm not holding my breath, the genderists won't give up without a fight...

Freespeecher · 11/04/2020 13:01

HennyPenny4

Thanks - I suppose the main point isn't that as much as science doesn't care for feelings or views on multiple genders etc so it's important not to mess up the data by including some biological males under the 'female' category.

(On the subject of data it seems that each country is carrying out different numbers of Covid-19 tests and recording the results in their own way, making comparisons tough, perhaps even meaningless).
