Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Woah, the accepting of male and female chromosomes on the BBC!

Blow me down with a feather. I’m listening to the BBC’s global podcast covering Coronavirus and they are covering a scientific report that discusses why males are more susceptible to the virus than women and that’s because the female has two chromosomes from each parent and the male, just the one.

So in a global pandemic we’re allowed to talk about biological sex and the fact that we are indeed different? No pronoun jibber jabber, just hardcore facts.

Nearly fell off my chair.

OP: what was the date of the podcast? Their summaries are pretty useless and I’d like to find it.

I'm sorry perhaps I'm being dense but could you explain this:

the female has two chromosomes from each parent and the male, just the one

I think females and males both have 23 chromosomes from each parent. Sorry that sentence confused me!

Women inherit one of their mother’s X chromosomes and their father’s only X chromosome, making us XX.
Males inherit one of their mother’s X chromosomes and their father’s only Y chromosomes, making them XY.
The X chromosome is the one that impacts the immune system, and if you have two, they can act in tandem. This is a good intro to the subject <a class="break-all" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/02/opinion/coronavirus-men-women.html#click=t.co/tb1tRakWZM" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.nytimes.com/2020/04/02/opinion/coronavirus-men-women.html#click=t.co/tb1tRakWZM

this virus is transhobic because it doesnt accept transwomen are women.

DrDreReturns · 11/04/2020 14:37

Ok so that statement specifically refers to the X chromosome? The gene(s) that confer protection against Coranivirus are sex linked, like haemophilia?

PositiveVibez · 11/04/2020 14:43

I'm guessing TW are feeling happy that they've lowered their risk with a wig, some lipstick and telling anyone who'll listen about sitting down to wee

😂

HennyPenny4 · 11/04/2020 16:34

You do realise it is each cell in your body that has 2 X chromosomes, not just 2 per body, this is why I cannot get my head round people saying we can change sex - just impossible.

HeffalumpsCantDance · 11/04/2020 16:45

Oh Bloody Hell, does this mean Manflu is real?

DrDreReturns · 11/04/2020 16:49

Yes I do realise that @HennyPenny4 (except erythrocytes) the way it way phrased confused me, that's all.

DryHeave · 12/04/2020 13:29

Anyone know which episode?
