Jess Phillips Shadow Home Office role on Safeguarding and Domestic Violence

TheCatsServant · 10/04/2020 01:03

Just read that Starmer has appointed her to the shadow home office working on domestic violence and safeguarding.

I know Jess has had add previous work experience with domestic violence but I can't remember whether she was one of the MPs who signed the Labour party's trans pledge?

I'm seriously hoping not if safeguarding is now going to be her responsibility!

That's one problem, another is that she reads out the list of murdered women every year in Parliament; but the list is compiled by Karen Ingala Smith who's application to join the Labour Party was turned down and so she has become a doubleplus ungood unperson.

MoleSmokes · 10/04/2020 01:13

I'm sure I saw an exchange on Twitter where Jess Phillips was horrified about Karen Ingala Smith's application being rejected and said she was going to look in to it. I don't think I dreamed it . . . I hope not!

Thelnebriati · 10/04/2020 01:16

She can't win. If she stops reading out the list she will have sold out every one of her principles. If she does read it out she'll be crucified by trans activists.

Fallingirl · 10/04/2020 01:16

Jess Phillips is of the belief that men are what men say they are, but it will be very interesting to see whether she will be reading the list of dead women this year.

Fallingirl · 10/04/2020 01:19

I suppose she’ll just have to formally distance herself from Ingala Smith while reading the list.

I am sick to the back teeth of the stupidity of the purity/distancing from politics.

endofthelinefinally · 10/04/2020 01:21

With a bit of luck she will take it seriously and talk to the organisations and charities that support women experiencing abuse. That would be a good place to start.
Her previous experience was as an admin assistant I think. Not a contact role.

Melroses · 10/04/2020 06:34

I saw this trending on twitter earlier. Not a nice read. Sad

donquixotedelamancha · 10/04/2020 06:51

I can't remember whether she was one of the MPs who signed the Labour party's trans pledge?

I doubt it very much given her previous statements.

Jess Phillips is of the belief that men are what men say they are

Yes, but with nuance. She has criticised the aggression from TRAs (mildly) and spoken of the importance of women's rights in reference to the self ID debate.

She's not remotely GC but not is she RLB or Nandy level of daft.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 10/04/2020 07:33

She's been supportive of trans people and been TWAW in the past if I recall, although not signed the pledge (I think).
TRAs are tantrumming on twitter anyway. There's the usual hyperbolic and completely lacking in reality accusations. Hmm
She's been branded a witch terf, one way or the other.

Imnobody4 · 10/04/2020 08:03

I'm not completely dismayed but I do think she has a level of arrogance that means she's not good at listening. She knows she's right.

nettie434 · 10/04/2020 08:19

‘Jess Phillips is Labour's Jo Swinson: completely convinced of her own imaginary merits, blissfully unaware of her absence of talent‘

That’s one of the better tweets. I think there’s some truth in it. I agree that she is more nuanced than some in terms of her attitudes. She is good about violence against women. She talks as if she had a more face to face role endofthelinefinally so I was interested that it was just an admin role. Where she does well is in getting her message across and coming across as quite grounded. It could be a reasonable appointment if she is willing to take her brief seriously.

PrimalLass · 10/04/2020 08:24

If she does read it out she'll be crucified by trans activists.

It's time to face that and not care. I do think it's one of the reasons she dropped out of the leadership race. Plus she really wasn't ready. I like her so I hope she's about to step up on this.

Helmetbymidnight · 10/04/2020 08:29

i like jess- i can see on twitter that tra's are in a fury about her appointment.

endofthelinefinally · 10/04/2020 08:32

Just watching GMB. They have just done a good piece on this. Jess Phillips has no excuse not to take this seriously and educate herself at this time. Whatever her experience, knowledge, (or lack of) has been up till now.
She has been handed an opportunity to make a difference. I hope she takes it and doesn't mess up.

NotTerfNorCis · 10/04/2020 08:59

TRAs are moaning on Twitter, so she must be doing something right.

They're also complaining that she doesn't support prostitution. Again, good.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 10/04/2020 09:39

I'm prepared to give her a chance. There are huge changes ahead ideologically and while she's far from perfect, I know she knows what a woman is and suspect that safeguarding of children is also a priority. And no matter how much TRAs whinge, the awful statistics about women and DV are stark in the face of the 'men are just at much at risk'.

Angryresister · 10/04/2020 10:18

Hope that she has listened carefully and will be prepared to stand up for women. Too bad if the men don’t like it.

TinselAngel · 10/04/2020 10:37

I used to like Jess Phillips until I discovered she was instrumental in the proposed reform of the GRA, and that she wants to make it more difficult for trans widows to leave their marriages.

Melroses · 10/04/2020 11:27

Yes, I remember that. I hope she regrets it and rethinks. It doesn't seem to have bought her any favours at all from TRAs as she tries to fence-sit.

Their (and the woke and momentum) tweets are very unpleasant. It has always been said on here that it is not possible to sit on the fence with this.

TinselAngel · 10/04/2020 11:28

She's not on the fence with regards to trans widows rights. She's firmly on the other side of the fence.

nonsenceagain · 10/04/2020 11:43

I think she supports the Nordic Model.

Melroses · 10/04/2020 11:44

She is trying (in many ways) but throwing the least able to defend themselves over to appease that scary dog...…...

RuffleCrow · 10/04/2020 11:45

She'll be fine... if only she can remember what a woman is Shock

veryboredtoday · 10/04/2020 11:50

I like her and I think she has guts so hopefully she will hold her ground and not be swayed by the extremes in the debate.

twoHopes · 10/04/2020 11:56

I can confirm that she's Nordic Model as I wrote to her complaining about a Labour Women's Officer's (ahem) tweets about prostitution. I was really surprised that she actually replied (since I'm not in her constituency) and it was a really kind, thoughtful email.
