Keir Starmer wins Labour leadership

Well, it's the least worst option.

Hopefully Long-Bailey and Nandy will bog off to their TRA mates and stay there now. (Although I wonder if they will be dropped like hot stones now their usefulness has expired?)

Be interesting to see how/if/when/why Starmer addresses women's rights in the coming months and years.

Imo he's not a conviction politician so he will go where the soundbites (and let's be honest

That's certainly my impression too. He's about consensus rather than conviction, and that will go for how he handles the clamour from certain groups for Self ID, as it will for how voters in Wigan feel.

FloralBunting · 06/04/2020 10:55

Who'd have thought little OJ's principles would be so flexible?

RoyalCorgi · 06/04/2020 11:00

Neither is continuing to rehash Brexit but he seems committed to doing that.

That might change, though. And don't forget, 48% of voters voted to remain in the EU, which is a hefty minority. I doubt you'd get 48% of people voting for self-ID.

Also, it's not impossible that leaving the EU will turn out to be a complete disaster and that in five years' time people will be desperate to go back in. But a lot depends on the impact coronavirus has on the economies of the various member states.

The U.K Leaving was just the beginning...the fault lines in the EU will be blown wide apart by this current crisis. The U.K may well end up coming out of all of this relatively lightly compared to some EU countries - certainly those dependent on the European Central Bank.

WeetabixBananaHipsterFFS · 06/04/2020 12:52

Having listened to the 2018 Nick Robinson interview, it appears he has conviction personally, and I think he admires it in others.

But maybe I heard what I want to hear.

MoleSmokes · 06/04/2020 15:24

I am very much hoping that Keir Starmer will be more swayed by his past close working with Helen Steel on the McLibel Trial than by his "longtime acquaintance" Peter Tatchell.

Tatchell on Keir Starmer ("longtime acquaintance")

"Keir Starmer Is Not Who You Think He Is"
The human rights activist who became a top prosecutor. Political to the core but not a natural politician. It's not clear what kind of Labour leader Keir Starmer would be.

Buzzfeed News, February 12, 2020
Emily Ashton

"Peter Tatchell, a human rights campaigner and longtime acquaintance of Starmer, remembered him as always being “very open to representation from outside his own circle” as DPP.

“I was involved in helping to defend two Balochistan activists who the government of Pakistan was trying to frame on terrorism charges,” he said. “When I approached Keir about the case he immediately said ‘Come in and see me. Let's talk about it.’ He was a very high-profile, busy man at the time but he took the time, you know, which I think is a measure of his character and integrity.”

Tatchell said Starmer would make a “fine Labour leader” but said he hoped he would take on some of the “very thoughtful, intelligent proposals” made by Clive Lewis, the left-wing Labour MP who dropped out of the leadership contest in the early stages."

Anyone got any idea what those “very thoughtful, intelligent proposals” made by Clive Lewis, the left-wing Labour MP" were??

Most of this video is Keir Starmer praising Helen Steel and Dave Morris:

Helen Steel

So much that could be written and linked!

If he has not already done so then Keir Starmer could do with watching Helen's speech here:

"A Woman's Place is on the Platform: Helen Steel (23 November 2017)"

Video description:

"Helen Steel - trade unionist, social justice and environmental activist, McLibel defendent and heroic campaigner for justice against state spying and insitutionally sexist abuse by the police. Attacked at the Anarchist Bookfair for defending the right of women to distribute leaflets voicing concern about the Tory government's review of the Gender Recognition Act. Woman's Place UK were honoured to give her a platform in Cambridge on 23 November 2017, alongside Linda Bellos and Anne Ruzylo.

erratum: at 15:42 the date should be 1944, not 1994."

and listen to this . . .

"SCR Extra. Interview with Helen steel"

makemorenoise.libsyn.com/scr-extra-interview-with-helen-steel

"In this episode DJ Lippy interviews social justice campaigner Helen Steel.

She will be discussing her role in the McLibel case and her relationship with an undercover police officer in what has been dubbed the Spy Cops scandal. She also talks about the sustained campaign of harassment she has received from those within the radical activist community for her feminist beliefs."

Wikipedia

The usual suspects who erase women's achievements from Wikipedia and promote its unwaveringly pro-trans propaganda have been at work to try make everyone forget Helen Steel.

Thank you "Rosguill" for this on 26 October 2019:

"It has been suggested that Steel is not notable enough to warrant a stand alone article. Heres my response to that; . . . "

Keir - remember Helen - you listened to her once and lent her your support. Listen to her again now!

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 06/04/2020 16:06

Hmm, an endorsement from Peter Tatchell is the last thing I would want.

RuffleCrow · 06/04/2020 16:21

@MoleSmokes - no idea, but absolutely everything Clive Lewis claims to care about benefits him in some way. He's the king of metaphorical baby kissing.

SugarPlumFairyCakes · 06/04/2020 16:39

FFS Rebecca Long Bailey as Shadow Education Secretary. I have no confidence left whatsoever.

RuffleCrow · 06/04/2020 16:49

RBS and co are there to appease Momentum in the short term. They know as well as we do they'll be out in the first reshuffle (after they've said something ridiculous).

R0wantrees · 06/04/2020 16:54

Tatchell said Starmer would make a “fine Labour leader” but said he hoped he would take on some of the “very thoughtful, intelligent proposals” made by Clive Lewis, the left-wing Labour MP who dropped out of the leadership contest in the early stages."

Clive Lewis MP made a sudden sharp turn after being re-educated by TRA in local party. It happened just before he withdrew from leadership contest.

Twitter ratios were something to behold!

Justhadathought · 06/04/2020 17:01

Marsha De Cordova is the new women and Equalities minister. Anyone know anything about her? I understand she is registered blind.

MrsGrindah · 06/04/2020 17:09

Oh God Ed Miliband.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 06/04/2020 17:30

Wrong-Daily to Education

All teachers who don't believe in gender-fairies to be struck off?

MrsGrindah · 06/04/2020 17:43

Ed Miliband..the guy that thought it was a vote winner to pose with a mock stone tablet with Labours Ten Commandments on....

Floisme · 06/04/2020 17:56

I find the idea of Long Bailey in charge of young minds quite troubling.

koshkatt · 06/04/2020 18:00

As a teacher this scares me and I think that he has made a huge error. Looks like no vote for Labour from me for the foreseeable then. What a cock up.

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 06/04/2020 18:01

I can't work out who'll be pleased at Ed Miliband returning except Ed . I just have my fingers crossed that it's not an attempt to ease us gently into accepting the resurgence of the Milibands so his brother can stand as leader next time round. Hmm
Although tbh the Labour Party is now so removed from anything I'd vote for, that I'm more an interested observer than someone who is emotionally invested in it.

koshkatt · 06/04/2020 18:05

I rather liked David Milliband and think he would have made a damn good leader.

But I agree - the hideous mess that is the LP now after Corbyn/Momentum ruined it is going to take some turning around.

FloralBunting · 06/04/2020 18:24

Long Bailey as shadow education secretary?

I'm getting a lot of comfort at this stage from the fact that, like rainbows, shadows are visual ephemera that don't effect physical reality too much at all.

Tanith · 06/04/2020 19:01

"Long Bailey as shadow education secretary?"

Mmmhmm! Replacing Angela Rayner. Every cloud... Smile

FloralBunting · 06/04/2020 19:23

Rayner or Long Bailey.

The calibre of shadow education secretaries is testament to the quality of Labour's contribution to politics in 2020.

Things can only get better. Right? Right...?

LaureBerthaud · 06/04/2020 20:03

I find the idea of Long Bailey in charge of young minds quite troubling

I know but I suppose Starmer had to put her somewhere as she got 130k votes in the contest but she can be shuffled into oblivion before Labour get anywhere near government.

Justhadathought · 06/04/2020 21:24

I can't work out who'll be pleased at Ed Miliband returning except Ed

i like Ed Milliband, myself. Much prefer him to his brother. Saw his speech at the end of a Labour party conference in Liverpool - liked it a lot, and find him genuine.

BlackForestCake · 07/04/2020 00:19

Thangam Debbonaire is in the Shad Cab, who is the single solitary MP who suggested it wasn't great to have a screaming mob banging on the windows of a feminist meeting at Labour conference.
