Interesting that Elton did this. Would you guess it’s a slip up, or Elton being straightforward.

Lol

Elton and Sam Smith
CoolCarrie · 30/03/2020 07:32

That’s very funny , no doubt Sam will be weeping on camera again!

OhHolyJesus · 30/03/2020 07:39

Sam Smith will be pleased to be getting some attention I imagine.

Will Elton have to apologise? Hope so. More exposure for the NBs and their demands.

I don't get the argument about preferred pronouns, "Sam Smith uses they/they pronouns". Well he doesn't use them does he, others use pronouns to talk about him, so unless he talks about himself in the third person in a way so to use his own preferred pronouns on himself (which is possible) then the pronouns someone uses is not up to Sam and therefore will always be preferred as he's not the one using them.

And Elton John isn't an LGBT icon he is a gay icon.

yetanotherusernameAgain · 30/03/2020 07:51

Whoever wrote that article couldn't maintain using Sam's preferred pronouns either - I saw one "him" and a "his".

Deliriumoftheendless · 30/03/2020 07:56

Good luck out tantrumming Elton John, kids!

zanahoria · 30/03/2020 08:02

Elton grew up at a time when being homosexual could land you in jail, went through years of tabloid intrusion into his personal life, listened to entire football crowds enquire what he did in bed, saw friends die of AIDs but has finally arrived in a country where he can marry and adopt kids. Is it any wonder he doesn't give two hoots about all this.

nauticant · 30/03/2020 08:04

Here's a photo of Sam Smith being respectful:

twitter.com/samsmith/status/1232330662910230528

This respect thing is a one way street isn't it?

Staypositivepeople · 30/03/2020 08:08

I absolutely don’t understand all this ,perhaps I’ve reached peak knowledge as someone on here coined the frase.
Sam Smith is a man ,..why does he want people to use they ,they refers to more than one person....confused somewhat 😮

nauticant · 30/03/2020 08:16

It's about compelling people to do something they struggle to do and getting a kick about exerting that control. It goes by a number of different terms.

JemimaPuddleCat · 30/03/2020 08:20

This whole "non-binary" thing is the weirdest part of the brainwashing, to me.
I will generally do my best to respect whichever pronouns/name someone wishes to call his/herself, but will not be castigated if I use the most glaringly obvious one..

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 30/03/2020 08:21

That bit Photos posted was hilarious. Turns out that if someone looks like a human male people refer to that person using "he/his/him" automatically even if they're trying not to, because most of us learned our native languages as babies and how we use them is rather deeply embedded. I suspect that in languages that have masculine/feminine verb forms people are doing exactly the same thing.

BovaryX · 30/03/2020 08:23

Well said nauticant it really is about control. Forcing people to use language not to describe external reality, but to undermine it is an Orwellian stunt....

Danceswithwarthogs · 30/03/2020 08:56

Maybe this is karma for SS claiming he (as he was then) was the first openly gay man to win an Oscar in 2016... despite fact that Elton and others already had. This might be the last meaningful run-in Elton had with Sam... now he’s expected to be psychic and know that this person who was “proud to be an openly gay man” in 2016 is now offended if you call them ‘he’?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 30/03/2020 08:59

Pretty much any milestone Smith would like to claim, Elton already hit back in the 70s or 80s. Sorry, kid, you're a couple of generations too late (and also Elton John is legit talented, however much of a mess of a person he may have been in his younger days).

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 30/03/2020 09:01

If I, age 46, have an eye-rolling irritation instinctive response to all the pronoun drama I can only imagine how tedious it must seem to be people 20+ years older, especially the ones who lived through the AIDS crisis in a very up close and personal way.

Danceswithwarthogs · 30/03/2020 09:03

They’ll be gunning for Eurovision next.... oh wait Grin

BruceAndNosh · 30/03/2020 09:05

If Sam Smith keeps changing how he defines himself /themselves, how does Sam expect the rest of us to keep up?
The comment above about exerting control is very true

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 30/03/2020 09:07

Maybe Sam could pin an update thingy to Sam's twitter profile, like "my pronouns this week are as follows"

PertEllaTitsahoy · 30/03/2020 09:33

Maybe Sam could just stop being a precious, attention seeking drama llama? Grin

Sam's not fit to lick Eltons platform boots on both the diva and music front.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 30/03/2020 09:35

Elton's diva moments were certainly more entertaining! Though those around him at the time may feel just a tad differently about that.

MayFayner · 30/03/2020 09:45

I’m surprised this person has maintained the spotlight for so long. I don’t hear anything authentic in the music, notes are hit yes, but I don’t feel it. Plus I find it whiny. I guess other people must enjoy it.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 30/03/2020 09:47

Smith appears to be on the unofficial must not be criticized list so no doubt this thread will go.

nettie434 · 30/03/2020 09:51

To be fair to Sam Smith, this is from the BBC website when they came out as non binary:

‘They wrote: "I understand there will be many mistakes and mis-gendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you."’

What is worrying is that Sam’s fans reacted this way during a fundraiser for coronavirus. Surely that was more important than criticising Elton for misgendering? There is something going on here about fans being so enmeshed with the people they admire that they can’t see themselves as separate entities. The same happens to JK Rowling whenever she tries to express her personal opinions.

I expect Sam Smith was really pleased about the publicity, as well as any feelings of altruism.

Floisme · 30/03/2020 09:56

Exactly - an event that should have been entirely about essential workers, but they had to make it all about them.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 30/03/2020 09:59

Not quite sure how to put this gently. For the kind of individuals reacting that way I'm not convinced that they're capable of understanding "this is not the time to be centering yourself/this person/whatever abstract idea you're devoted to" as a concept. To most people coronavirus has created a shift in priorities into emergency mode where a whole lot of things can wait until after that's been tackled, but there's a segment of the population who because of narcissism or immaturity or whatever it is creating that effect for whom it's business as usual and nothing, even a global pandemic, matters more than (insert obsession here).
