The Sound of Music

Not a terribly deep and meaningful post, but sometimes light moments are to be welcomed.

Watching the Sound of Music whilst DC played beside me. DS (10) was really surprised by Rolf singing to Liesl like she was a baby in You are 16 - "I'll take care of you etc". And then shocked when Liesl joined in. DS's actual words were "She's going along with this rubbish!"

Thankfully the whole relationship set up seemed really alien to him.

Mockers

It has some lovely songs though. I love "The earth and other minor things". "The night they invented champagne".
I had no idea Andre Previn arranged and conducted the music for MGM.
I know Lerner and Lowe were the composer and Lyricist.

Mockerswithnoknockers · 27/03/2020 18:19

....'but the songs are lovely' is what they said about the Black & White Minstrel Show.

My objection to Lerner and Lowe is On The Street Where You Live, which is American-English. In My Fair Lady, Jeremy Kemp is In the street where she lives. If he'd been "on" the street, he would have been laying down in the road.

(See also Lloyd-Webber and "Midnight, Not a sound from the pavement, which means two very different things either side of the Atlantic.)

Rex Harrison has form. How about his 'why can't a woman be more like a man' song from my fair lady!

Or I will never let a woman in my life:

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 27/03/2020 18:58

Don't get me started on Calamity Jane.

Oh, I don't know.

Bill Hickock to Calam [talking about 'Miss' Francis [blokey spelling] Fryer: 'she ain't very good looking!'

Calam [Raising her eyes to the ceiling]: 'That ain't all she ain't!'

moofolk · 27/03/2020 19:39

I love Calamity Jane, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

There's a drinking game where you drink yo every lesbian reference in Calamity Jane, I highly recommend it. You'll be sloshed by the time you get to sing along to 'A Woman's Touch'.

Seven Brides, as someone I know once said, is ideologically unsound but rip roaring good fun.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 27/03/2020 20:33

You will pry my love for Calamity Jane from my cold, dead hands. I think Calamity learned to put on convention as a performance, but it didn’t quell her. In the very last scene she’s dressed for a party in women’s clothes, but she’s wearing her old greatcoat over the top.

FannyCann · 27/03/2020 20:46

Huh. What about Grease. Tart yourself up and start smoking if you want to keep your man. Angry

Devlesko · 27/03/2020 20:54

Mockers

I get your point but the B&W Minstrels was something else, but granted racist rather than sexist misogyny.

I think they were all great in their time.
Here's one of my favourites.

TeiTetua · 27/03/2020 21:47

With pretty much any kind of popular entertainment, you have to put your feminism aside for a while, and enjoy the show, then be feminist again. Kudos to kids who ask the right questions, though. They'll grow up to live good lives.

@GCGayDad I have not laughed so much in days. That seal clip. Thank you.

Never seen the film so what on earth is going on?!

ItsLateHumpty · 27/03/2020 22:56

GCGayDad

GrinGrinGrin

I've watched the clip several times now, and I love the comments. I am still concerned for the seal though - I don't think that bonnet is a good idea for swimming Shock

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 27/03/2020 23:41

I hope i don't ruin the jolliness.
I watched Frozen for the first time with the little people, was lovely and all but bloody hell,

"You look beautifuller, no not fuller but more beautiful"
I have never like disney, even as a child, but there is a free trial.

The real Annie Oakley is an interesting character. And in real life, she won!

Tezza1 · 28/03/2020 00:22

@GCGayDad Thank you, thank you, thank you. That is screamingly funny. It was done with such insouciance(?) after that maudlin song.

Why didn't Dr Dolittle just tangle the seal up in a few plastic bags, and be done with it.

I now know why I avoided this movie as a child.

Dances · 28/03/2020 06:21

Oh I still love them too

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 28/03/2020 07:04

I love all the old musicals but they are Shock looked at through a modern lense.
I still enjoy the old Fred and Ginger films but he is a pretty creepy stalker in most of them.
It's a stark reminder of how invisible that kind of misogyny was and is especially jarring because its dressed up as romance.
It makes me wonder how our current cultural output will be judged in the future.

jcurve · 28/03/2020 08:24

Saturday Night Live had a very funny take on the Rolf & Liesl relationship a few weeks ago:

Love it jcurve. 😂😂😂

EmpressLangClegInChair · 28/03/2020 09:32

I went to watch a local theatre group doing Seven Brides for Seven Brothers years ago without knowing anything about the storyline.

I left at the interval because I couldn’t grit my teeth any harder.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 28/03/2020 10:01

Tart yourself up and start smoking if you want to keep your man

To be very fair to Danny he is actually trying changing himself for her at the end

(Ds1 middle name is Adam...after the lead of a local production of 7 brides. Im sorry...i was young 😳)

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 28/03/2020 10:02

My mum loathed the sound of music

Because she had to watch it eleventy billion times in her 2nd job as a cinema usher while trying to earn money for my dads engagement ring

Seventyone72seventy3 · 28/03/2020 10:06

Seven Brides isn't bad! Adam gets the idea from Roman history but crucially it doesn't work out how he planned because Milly is not compliant. Milly and Adam only get back together when he realizes what an idiot he is and that she is a person in her own right. Ok, they all miraculously fall in love in the end instead of murdering the brothers and returning to the town with their severed heads but you can't have everything. And I love it and know the words off by heart

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 28/03/2020 10:19

Please rewrite the ending of all the movies here please seventy

I’m self isolating for 14 days...i need something cheerful (like severed heads)

Seventyone72seventy3 · 28/03/2020 10:26

Ha! I'll leave the other ones to someone else as I don't know them as well as 7B47B!
