The Sound of Music

Not a terribly deep and meaningful post, but sometimes light moments are to be welcomed.

Watching the Sound of Music whilst DC played beside me. DS (10) was really surprised by Rolf singing to Liesl like she was a baby in You are 16 - "I'll take care of you etc". And then shocked when Liesl joined in. DS's actual words were "She's going along with this rubbish!"

Thankfully the whole relationship set up seemed really alien to him.

True RufustheLanglovingreindeer
but I had the rage with Grease when the school decided the songs were just the thing for school singing, and my (then) five year old started chanting "tell me more, tell me more did you get very far,...did she put up a fight" in my ear driving home from school. I really should have made a BIG fuss but I'm not a natural complainer and hadn't discovered Mumsnet (if it existed) back then.

To cap it all, having put it at the top of films MY DAUGHTERS WILL NOT SEE list my mother thought it would be a lovely film for them to watch when they stayed over and bought the dvd, so they promptly learnt all the songs. Angry

How had I forgotten that scene of Dr Doolittle snogging a seal, then chucking it into the sea while it was wearing a gown and bonnet?

AnnaMagnani · 28/03/2020 11:16

I like Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Milly doesn't fit in with town life either, she is totally equal to Adam and stands up to him. Okay soooo they kidnap the other 6 girls.... But they were all going to be married off by their parents to the rubbishy boys in town which wasn't great either.

In the end the girls get to make their own choices rather than their parents' which is great. You just have to ignore the whole kidnap thing

Plus it's less creepy than Gigi. Anything is less creepy than Gigi.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 28/03/2020 11:20

Ralf was still prepared to dob on her and potentially get her killed in the scene in the graveyard (even if they did say they Just wanted von Trapp to report to Bremerhaven).

TheGinGenie · 28/03/2020 11:29

Agree with DreadPirateLuna. I also like that Maria stands up to the Captain. (I love this film, thanks OP Grin)

YetAnotherSpartacus · 28/03/2020 11:49

The scene with the whistle ...

QueenOfTheAndals · 28/03/2020 11:55

To be fair to Ralph they made him a villain in the film. In the original stage musical he discovers the Von Trapps in the cemetery but when his commanding officer asks if he's found them he replies to say he hasn't, and lets them get away.

And let's have a cheer for Sisters Margaretta and Bertha for stealing the Nazi's spark plugs!

Mechanic savvy nuns are awesome. Sister's doin' it for themselves.

LittleBearPad · 28/03/2020 12:30

To be very fair to Danny he is actually trying changing himself for her at the end

Yes but that lasts all of 5 minutes whereas Sandy seems committed to horrible trousers and fags.

LittleBearPad · 28/03/2020 12:30

So many great films.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 28/03/2020 12:32

Nah

She got rid of the cigarettes in seconds

And I’ll bet she was back in her skirts within hours Grin

chomalungma · 28/03/2020 20:30

Lordy, don't go near Seven Brides for Seven Brothers!

A friend of mine went to go and see that - I must admit I must have killed the moment by explaining the basic plot

PhoenixBuchanan · 28/03/2020 21:47

My mum used to point out how sexist The Sound of Music was when I watched it as a kid. I recognize it, but this is one movie where I just don't care. I cannot imagine a world without TSOM!

Dances · 28/03/2020 22:13

Yeh the kidnap thing is a bit hard to ignore

FannyCann · 28/03/2020 22:14

I took the DDs to TSOM at the Bristol Hippodrome, starring whoever it was that won the Andrew Lloyd Webber Maria competition.

I had no idea that it was the done thing to dress up as a nun (or in curtains) and get comprehensively pissed! The sight on one young woman being WOman-handled into a taxi afterwards, one friend pulling, one pushing and another hoiking up the tight short skirt to help raise a leg, is burned into their memories.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 29/03/2020 05:23

Datun
Rex Harrison has form. How about his 'why can't a woman be more like a man' song from my fair lady!

I love that movie, that song (the whole movie) makes me laugh so much!

Ikeasucks · 29/03/2020 11:56

'why can't a woman be more like a man' song from my fair lady!

Guess it’s from the man’s prospective and he too is on a journey of sorts. I love musicals (saw Martine McCutcheon as Eliza and she was great) - often when the man is portrayed as being sexist (MFL, TSOM,TFOTT) it’s shown as a negative, not a positive thing.

As for Rolf he was very young and brainwashed, i guess. Just a kid, supposedly. I did watch TSOM recently, first for a long time - always loved it but it was more cringey than i remembered - didn’t help to have my husband and teenage son hooting in the background.

MsTSwift · 29/03/2020 15:42

The Oliver song “As Long As He Needs Me” has prompted quite a few discussions with my 10 year old who just couldn’t understand why Nancy would choose to stay with such a horrible man.

Lamahaha · 29/03/2020 16:05

I love that movie, that song (the whole movie) makes me laugh so much!

My Fair Lady is so memorable for me -- I went to see it on my first date!
We were both 14, and in the middle of it he grabbed me hand!

All the songs are wonderful -- but seen from a feminist viewpoint Shock

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 29/03/2020 16:41

The Stage Musical "Oliver!" has, in all of its Broadway productions, had to correct the mistaken presumption that Fagin was in some way Jewish.

DreadPirateLuna · 29/03/2020 18:41

Fagin in the book is called "the Jew" and his portrayal is very anti-Semitic.

Although Nancy is an interesting character in both book and musical version. Mistreated her whole life and with obvious Stockholm syndrome towards Bill Sykes, she is nonetheless capable of great bravery and probably one of the most sympathetic portrayals in Victorian times of a "fallen woman".

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 29/03/2020 18:52

The scene with Rolf and Liesl is so funny because she's so obviously much more confident and up for it than he is - all the action completely undermines the words. He looks pretty terrified of her, to be fair.

MsTSwift · 29/03/2020 19:28

Exactly Elizabeth that’s my take on it too. She is 100 brighter than he is bourne out by what happens in the end

hiptobeasquare · 29/03/2020 19:56

There’s a great broadway backwards version of 16 going on 17.
