"Men menstruate too"

I'm currently studying a master's degree and my uni's Student Union has just posted the following about how "men mensurate too". At a time where we don't know what's going on with our degrees and the SU posts a long waffling statement about how men have periods. You couldn't make it up!

The uni already has self contained mini bathrooms with sanitary bins in all of them. They're great little bathrooms with a toilet and sink and are fully self contained.

It sounds really silly but this statement feels like I've lost the plot? Surely these people can't seriously believe that men mensurate? This is a good university! Surely these people know enough basic biology?

^^SU Liberation Officer statement

If some men menstruate too, why are there no sanitary bins in men’s toilets? This question was at the heart of a paper presented recently to the University’s Social Inclusion Committee by student officers.

University of Warwick policy supports people’s right to use gendered facilities in line with their gender identity. However, given that people of all genders may menstruate (including some trans men, transmasculine and non-binary people, as well as some intersex people of all genders), restricting the placement of sanitary bins to women’s and gender-neutral toilets forces some people who identify as men to use gender-neutral facilities.

Indeed, despite the University’s commitment to “be recognised as best in class in [their] approach to diversity and social inclusion”, Warwick Provost, Christine Ennew, recently deferred a proposal to extend the provision of sanitary bins to all toilet facilities on campus. Just days prior, however, the Provost had released a public statement in response to the University’s new ranking in the Stonewall Equality Index, stating that Warwick “will still have significant work to do to embed our commitment to creating a genuinely inclusive culture and environment on campus.” If installing sanitary bins in all toilet facilities is not an integral part of building a trans-inclusive university, what is?

An Equality Impact Assessment (tinyurl.com/uux4vla) for the policy of restricting sanitary bins to women’s and gender-neutral toilet facilities has found that there is a negative impact on five out of the eight protected groups, meaning that this university is currently failing its duty of care to provide adequate facilities for trans students in single-sex spaces. To make matters worse, gender-neutral toilets are not yet widely available across campus.

Warwick can no longer claim to be ignorant to the negative impacts of their policy restricting sanitary bins to women’s and gender-neutral toilets. We now call upon them to live up to their public pronouncements on trans-inclusion by demanding a firm commitment to providing sanitary bins in all campus toilets as soon as possible.^^

Ooooh! From the title SU Liberation Officer and every paragraph... just Oh! Heaven help us all!

OhHolyJesus · 17/03/2020 08:24

I direct you and the SU poster to the Julia Hartley Brewer you tube video taking about tampon tax. It is a joy to behold.

Ask this person where the blood comes from or where the tampon goes.

CumbrianYellowBee89 · 17/03/2020 08:26

Omg!

Cal me old fashioned I don't care. But only women menstruate.
I'm all for supporting everyone's believe but there are only to genders; male and female. People's sexual identity is completely different yes, but gender is one or the other.

freelancedolly · 17/03/2020 08:26

Unfortunately this is the end point of idiocy that allowing 'anyone who identifies as...' into the loo of their choice results in. They'll cave in the end, no doubt about it, because there's no logical basis to refusing it once you allow female-bodied people into men's loos.

Roll on the implosion of TRA.

(I studied at Warwick 30 years ago and recall back then a student protest I was part of which made the national papers as the very middle class students went ballistic at not being allowed to park their cars on campus. Students will go full activism over the stupidest shit.)

SadlyMissTaken · 17/03/2020 08:26

You would think the SU would have more important concerns right now.... The university facilities managers certainly will have

Whatsnewpussyhat · 17/03/2020 08:32

Why are they crying about it when there are bins in the mixed sex toilets?

NearlyGranny · 17/03/2020 08:33

Still some work to do to go higher on the Stonewall index, eh?

That translates as "We're still not quite crazy enough round here, but we're working hard on total crazy." The problem is; a body like Stonewall is trapped in a purity spiral to justify its continuing existence: there will always be more and crazier crazy to strive for until the whole thing implodes.

Post will probably get removed for smearing Stonewall.

Considering how they initially handled the rape chat debacle, this doesn't surprise me at all.

Sicario · 17/03/2020 08:38

Students have always been at the forefront of whatever the latest perceived social injustice is. It gives them something to get all het up about and makes them feel like Che Guevara when they wave their banners and shout their slogans.

No doubt life will come along soon enough and give them a healthy dose of reality.

OneEpisode · 17/03/2020 08:44

How can this possibly show up on 5 out of 8 of the protected characteristics in a equality impact assessment? It could edge into the gender reassignment one, at best?

LynnSchmob · 17/03/2020 08:44

Yup, they are in for a hefty dose of “grow the fuck up”. Nobody is going to be interested in this self absorbed drivel. The western work is facing proper problems.

HPFA · 17/03/2020 08:47

We really shouldn't be too keen on seeing men menstruate.

That link isn’t an EIA it’s a cartoon of one, for instance they identify transmen etc as having the protected characteristic of “gender” and the poor transmen, transmascs etc have further to walk tinyurl.com/uux4vla

Sicario · 17/03/2020 08:50

"Hate to break it to you, kids, but you're just boring old run-of-the-mill dimorphic human beings. It's hard, I know, but you're not special. Sorry about that."

Michelleoftheresistance · 17/03/2020 08:53

Only women menstruate. Just some women prefer not to call themselves women. That's about as far as it goes.

And yes, the world is about to lose all time and patience for this.

OneEpisode · 17/03/2020 08:53

There are also apparently aged people still menustrating, —and still playing dress up--who can’t walk as far, hence age discrimination

ThinEndoftheWedge · 17/03/2020 08:54

I think this idiocy is probably part of an actual strategy - normalising TWAW and TMAM by having it subliminally enforced on you in society - i.e. men menstruate - where the biological reality is...err... umm...no they don’t.

MedusasButterDish · 17/03/2020 08:55

Ah, so women have paid the opportunity costs so far, but now it's time to pay the real costs (twice the sanitary bins, plus PHS or some other company's emptying service), and someone has balked.

Ha.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/03/2020 09:03

If some men menstruate too, why are there no sanitary bins in men’s toilets?

They should have had a think about that first word before writing the rest of that statement.

When an initial 'If' is false, you ignore what follows.

Liberation from both logic and science?Hmm

Mockerswithnoknockers · 17/03/2020 09:08

Would I be wrong in thinking that some people aren't ready for university and need to be sent back to mixed infants?

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 17/03/2020 09:13

Following the column in the Telegraph at the weekend about David Thomas' journey to becoming Diana, there were some interesting discussions around colonialism.

This is pure invade and take all the best bits & privileges colonialism.

borntobequiet · 17/03/2020 09:35

Warwick, eh?
I'm an alumna. They're always asking me for money. I think an email is in order saying I certainly won't support an institution that in any way facilitates the promulgation of anti-scientific nonsense.

Lamahaha · 17/03/2020 09:47

@CumbrianYellowBee89

Cal me old fashioned I don't care. But only women menstruate.
I'm all for supporting everyone's believe but there are only to genders sexes; male and female. People's sexual identity is completely different yes, but gender sex is one or the other.

Fixed that for you! Gender is just personality and can be anything you want it to be.
Sex is binary.
If it isn't, how come there are only two options, Male-to-Female and Female-to-Male? Where are the other 100--1000-1 million possible transformations?

We need to stop indulging this misinformation, and it starts with the words we use. We cannot allow a horde of students to redefine common words that everyone in the world understands.

RoyalCorgi · 17/03/2020 10:25

Good to know that at a time of national crisis, the SU has its fingers on the pulse.

One issue this does raise for me, though, is: how many trans men are using the men's toilets? Because my guess would be: not very many.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 17/03/2020 10:50

I’m all for sanitary bins in the men’s. Maybe male architects of the future will realise how nasty it is to be jammed up against one and design cubicles better.
