"Men menstruate too"

I'm currently studying a master's degree and my uni's Student Union has just posted the following about how "men mensurate too". At a time where we don't know what's going on with our degrees and the SU posts a long waffling statement about how men have periods. You couldn't make it up!

The uni already has self contained mini bathrooms with sanitary bins in all of them. They're great little bathrooms with a toilet and sink and are fully self contained.

It sounds really silly but this statement feels like I've lost the plot? Surely these people can't seriously believe that men mensurate? This is a good university! Surely these people know enough basic biology?

^^SU Liberation Officer statement

If some men menstruate too, why are there no sanitary bins in men’s toilets? This question was at the heart of a paper presented recently to the University’s Social Inclusion Committee by student officers.

University of Warwick policy supports people’s right to use gendered facilities in line with their gender identity. However, given that people of all genders may menstruate (including some trans men, transmasculine and non-binary people, as well as some intersex people of all genders), restricting the placement of sanitary bins to women’s and gender-neutral toilets forces some people who identify as men to use gender-neutral facilities.

Indeed, despite the University’s commitment to “be recognised as best in class in [their] approach to diversity and social inclusion”, Warwick Provost, Christine Ennew, recently deferred a proposal to extend the provision of sanitary bins to all toilet facilities on campus. Just days prior, however, the Provost had released a public statement in response to the University’s new ranking in the Stonewall Equality Index, stating that Warwick “will still have significant work to do to embed our commitment to creating a genuinely inclusive culture and environment on campus.” If installing sanitary bins in all toilet facilities is not an integral part of building a trans-inclusive university, what is?

An Equality Impact Assessment (tinyurl.com/uux4vla) for the policy of restricting sanitary bins to women’s and gender-neutral toilet facilities has found that there is a negative impact on five out of the eight protected groups, meaning that this university is currently failing its duty of care to provide adequate facilities for trans students in single-sex spaces. To make matters worse, gender-neutral toilets are not yet widely available across campus.

Warwick can no longer claim to be ignorant to the negative impacts of their policy restricting sanitary bins to women’s and gender-neutral toilets. We now call upon them to live up to their public pronouncements on trans-inclusion by demanding a firm commitment to providing sanitary bins in all campus toilets as soon as possible.^^

I’m all for sanitary bins in the men’s. Maybe male architects of the future will realise how nasty it is to be jammed up against one and design cubicles better.

absolutely.

And what is the problem with a trans man using the gender neutral toilets?

The replies on their Facebook post are being heavily moderated. I'm so stressed about everything that's going on, especially with the Corona virus and with myself being in a very high risk group. I can't believe the SU are wasting time on this!

They probably needed AAA to study there Shock

Ask them to work out how much it would cost for the extra bins (they aren't cheap) and if that money couldn't be better spent on other things such as free sanitary protection instead.

I'm also an alumna who saw this and instantly became dubious of the Equality Impact Assessment that hit 5/8 problems for this but failed to protect women threatened with rape on campus.
However I am not surprised, the first time I saw the T**f word was on my Facebook from someone who was an officer at the union when I was there. It was all about campaigns back then, probably as students have so much free time. Nearly a decade later and they are still campaigning in their little bubble but for a new cause. This wasn't on the radar when I was there, and I'm glad because I can't say that I wouldn't have been sucked into the 'be kind' mentality. Old age (30 Grin) and moreover motherhood has made me think more critically.
I really think now was not the time to publish such a statement regardless, given what's going on in the news.
I'm finally delurking on here, but still not bold enough to do so on social media because so many people on my "friends" list are 100% TWAW.

It's a complete load of bollocks but the advantage is it will get sanitary bins into mens loos which are necessary and under provided for men with incontinence issues, freeing up the disabled changing room. It's interesting to see that trans men>disabled men in this particular hierarchy. Shame about the wording though

SU can be very daft at times. Back in the mid 80s my Uni's SU decided it would ban Jokes about the Irish in the Rag Mag as they were racist. Fair enough. Same old jokes appeared but this time they featured Polish people going into bars..... Absolutely no insight that Polish people would also find jokes offensive. SU are NOT the font of all knowledge

CranberriesChoccy · 17/03/2020 12:34

Can't they just identify out of menstruation?

I fucking would.

LetsSplashMummy · 17/03/2020 13:03

They should have to fund these bins from the LGBT allocated funds, hopefully seeing it next to some real issues would help them see how it isn't a real issue.

DidoLamenting · 17/03/2020 13:30

How can this possibly show up on 5 out of 8 of the protected characteristics in a equality impact assessment? It could edge into the gender reassignment one, at best?

They have included age as a characteristic along with waffle that older people will have mobility issues meaning they may have to walk further to find a suitable toilet.

This is nonsense and ageist. Most women stop menstruating between late 40s to mid 50s.

No woman in that group would consider herself old. Fgs you don't qualify for any senior person discounts or privileges at that age.

If a woman in that age group has a mobility issue it will be a mobility issue in its own right connected to an underlying disability or health issue. The assumption that women in their late 40s to mid 50s are older people who will have mobility issues is ageist.

AnyOldSpartabix · 18/03/2020 09:18

Has nobody handed them a grip yet? I think they need one.

Qcng · 18/03/2020 12:33

The men's loos will have a row of urinals.

All the cubicles in the men's area will need to be designed and built differently to fit sanitary bins at a cost of ££££ to the university.

Are transmen really so self indulgent that they can't use the mixed sex cubicles? Are they so keen to walk past rows of urinals that they will never ever use? Make other men uncomfortable when see a female non-passing TM walk past?

The whole movement is so selfish. Oh the state of the youth today.

MyOwnSummer · 19/03/2020 21:48

As a PP has mentioned, there is a strong argument for bins in mens toilets. I think one of the Lords talked about this in their recent debate - Bins for Boys - as a legit campaign to ensure that men with continence issues have provisions to change and dispose of their pads in a dignified, private environment.

Surely a Biohazard Bin in Every Bog is the way to go?

Many TM are young, many will not pass. The thought of some poor kid potentially being harmed by a predatory male with overwhelming physical strength in the gents is heartbreaking.

TheBewildernessisWeetabix · 19/03/2020 23:49

The adult human male does not have the organs necessary for menstruation. These authoritarian so called educators are going to set science back at least two generations.

Durgasarrow · 20/03/2020 01:45

Men don't menstruate, because menstruation is part of the integrated cycle of women's reproductive ability to create life. All males lack that gift.
