Leicester renames Women's day

BovaryX · 03/03/2020 06:01

The Times reports Leicester has renamed it Womxn at the behest of their new women's officer. As usual, objections to this are muted because students are frightened about retribution or punishment from the university.

Leicester students’ renaming of the celebration as International Womxn’s Day follows their election of a trans woman to the post of women’s officer. Dan Orr will represent the views of women on campus, speaking out about sexism and misogyny. A female student at Leicester University told The Times that she was “very upset” by the election but feared speaking out publicly in case she was disciplined by the university.

Lordfrontpaw - there is!

Nic Farmer, LGBT+ Officer
Charlie Joseph Hugill, Trans and Non-binary Officer

www.leicesterunion.com/news/article/6013/SU-Election-Results/

The idea of a Women's Officer who represents actual women is still unacceptable to them.

GCAcademic · 03/03/2020 12:00

There is a trans officer. But that wasn't enough, apparently, Dan had to colonise the women's officer role as well. This is an issue in a lot of universities - the T agenda dominates across three separate SU roles, the LGBT one, a separate trans post, plus the women's officer one.

itsor · 03/03/2020 12:09

The bottom picture at this link has Dan Orr, 'Women's Officer', listed as the person on the right: www.leicesterunion.com/news/article/6013/SU-Election-Results/ This person is not even trying. I have no issue with legitimate trans people and the difficulties they face, but this person is clearly just mocking women by claiming to be one and getting elected as Women's Officer. In what way is Dan a woman? Not a biological female, not presenting as female...do they just think they have a 'female brain'? What offensive, regressive drivel. Dan should be ashamed.

BendyLikeBeckham · 03/03/2020 12:11

Dear God, this beggars belief. I despair, I really do.

Women are further relegated under the TA agenda. So fucking sad and rage inducing at the same time.

BeepOpsiePie · 03/03/2020 12:21

Renaming a women's event to something so awkward to pronounce that it cannot be referred to in ordinary conversation... Smooth move.

Avocadohips · 03/03/2020 12:26

I got into a debate on social media the other day. My friend - female - literally told me that to refer to women as a sex didn't make any sense because "some women are born without vaginas." (Refering to vaginal genesis, a rare condition in which a female is born without any sexual reproduction organs)

I've lost count of the amount of times people have posted about disorders of sex development to explain why sex isn't binary.

When you're arguing with this and a Male-presenting, Male named penis-having person as a women's officer, where the fuck do you even start?

Whatsnewpussyhat · 03/03/2020 12:39

Notice the t shirt with 'abolish prisons' on.
Now who does that remind me of.......

Lordfrontpaw · 03/03/2020 12:39

Does your friend understand the whole XX/XY thing? Ask them if you would still be human if you had only one arm or kidney - because humans have 2 don't they?

Michelleoftheresistance · 03/03/2020 12:42

I've never seen the word "mxn" (for man)..I wonder why?

for the same reason you never see transmen threaten to rape or choke people with their cocks for the crime of displeasing them, or wanking in men's changing rooms.

If 'women' is merely an umbrella term..

Why is woman being reduced to an umbrella term? So it can be colonised and named as something males own and women don't. This is the point. Women, even the word women has been taken away from you by males for males. Why is it not considered appallingly appropriative and oppressive and erasing to colonise the words and language female people have for themselves?

Because society regards it right to oppress and exclude women and demand free labour from them for others. It's called oppression. It's a real thing for women, not a bit of fun cosplay.

Merida46 · 03/03/2020 13:05

Hopefully all the adult human females will avoid this event like the plague!

Lordfrontpaw · 03/03/2020 13:25

And host a proper event.

EverardDigby · 03/03/2020 13:28

This person is not even trying.

The problem is, if you can dress anyway to be a woman then so can transwomen.

One of my friends has a male child who's trans but dresses in clothes that could be male or female most of the time - jeans and hoodies / t shirts etc. I do find it a bit puzzling but why shouldn't they wear what most/many young women wear that is not particularly feminine.

Lordfrontpaw · 03/03/2020 13:40

Why aren't gay men up in arms about this? If boys are being told that if they like dollies and pink they are trans (and whisked off to 'specialists' for fixing)? If a girl hates her body changing into a woman's and tries to disguise herself, she is called trans.

I'm beginning to wonder of girls and boys experience of 'transery' have different causes.

FleecyMoo · 03/03/2020 13:55

What the hell are 'womxn'? I'm thinking a species from another planet because I've never met one!

It's very tempting to laugh at the idiocy of the young but it will be very interesting to see what happens over the next few years when (if) they grow up. Like a previous poster I doubt they will still be a 'womx' when they are married with children, a home of their own and a responsible job.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 03/03/2020 13:58

I'm surprised they still have a women's officer at all, most universities seem to have changed to 'equalities officer' or something similar. Student unions all tend to be run by a certain type of person, and most students don't know or care about what they are doing.

tobee · 03/03/2020 14:00

A side effect from this is, speaking to my ds in 3rd year, all of his friends hold university student unions in derision. Which, on the plus side, leads me to hope that the generation upcoming are not fooling for this. But, on the downside, only the batshit, egotistical narcissist types are standing for office and running everything in their own image. And are voted in by a small, non representative clique.

tobee · 03/03/2020 14:00

X post with above

GCAcademic · 03/03/2020 14:56

If you look at the results for the election, this person was elected on a tiny number of votes - 103. Leicester has 20,000 students in total. That gives an indication of how much interest students have in SU politics.

boatyardblues · 03/03/2020 15:21

The problem with ignoring student union politics is that holding student union office is now the first rung on a career in actual politics. Look at Wes Streeting MP’s career trajectory for example. It’s no wonder the Labour party is losing credibility with the general public if it is drawing on such a narrow range of interests at student politics level, including issues which are even a turn-off for the wider student body.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/03/2020 15:34

I'd never thought about it like that, but it ensures there is little pushback for sex based rights actual feminism

Mockerswithnoknockers · 03/03/2020 15:39

Leicester Uni Illuminati or whatever they call it here. It's hard-working and very sciencey. Not political. The Union was where you went for a lunchtime drink.

Student Politics same as ever by the sound of it.

tobee · 03/03/2020 15:52

Of course you could say that the "only the batshit, egotistical narcissist types" are standing for office in all levels of politics. I give you December 12th 2019!

Coyoacan · 03/03/2020 16:11

That is very apparent by the fact that they elected a first year student. You usually have to be at a place a while for people to know you enough to support for a post.

Is it best for students to ignore these people? Shouldn't they try to reclaim their space?

1984in2019 · 03/03/2020 16:29

These people sound batshit. I’m pleased to see twitter is destroying them.

They aren’t even consistent because one of their events listed does actually use the real word “women”, perhaps because the external speakers are women not “womxn”..
