Workplace cake sale to raise money for Mermaids

To celebrate International Women's Day Hmm a charity bake sale is being held at my workplace to raise money for Mermaids UK, "to show our support for the transgender community".

Has anybody come across a similar situation in the workplace, and if so, did you raise any concerns? I'm cowardly about speaking out, but I feel I should say something! How to do this delicately/ sensitively?.I don't want to rock the boat though, as it's work! And ultra-woke...

FFS, how are the justifying this for IWD. Do you have a whistle blowing line?

Cucumbersalad · 06/03/2020 17:12

Hi @pizzaformylunch and @Juststopswimming I have had the email too.

I'm so disappointed and disheartened. Don't really know how to respond, if I even should bother. Sigh. I actually thought they would change the charity.

Sigh. I actually thought they would change the charity.

Honestly I did too. Knowing there are more than one of you pointing out to them that, besides anything else, Mermaids is just not a charity for women, I really thought they'd change it.

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 06/03/2020 17:25

Wow. Furious too. This is outrageous.

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 06/03/2020 17:25

Gah. Refresh-fail again! Blush

DidoLamenting · 06/03/2020 17:26

That's dreadful. It isn't even necessary to make a criticism of Mermaids- it simply isn't a charity focused on women.

LynnSchmob · 06/03/2020 17:28

It will be interesting to see how many women bother to bake or buy the cakes (because I sodding wouldn’t)

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 06/03/2020 17:29

There is absolutely nothing left for women, is there?

Would those of you who work there be prepared to name the company by pm? I don’t want to inadvertently support this misogyny.

FrogsFrogs · 06/03/2020 17:31

Why not a women's charity for women's Day?

I mean. Seriously. What?

datasgingercatspot · 06/03/2020 17:32

I agree, Talking.

DidoLamenting · 06/03/2020 17:32

I would very much like to know which company this is as I do not want to support it.

FrogsFrogs · 06/03/2020 17:33

Suggest F4J for the next one or that Elan bloke's org

BringbackLang · 06/03/2020 17:36

So I assume the LBGTQ+ society said no?
I repeat my question incredulously. Why are they dictating which charity to raise funds for on International Women's day (and a highly questionable one at that.)

Can you take this higher?

ThePurported · 06/03/2020 17:37

It will be interesting to see how many women bother to bake or buy the cakes (because I sodding wouldn’t)

I would bring a pink Barbie cake and a stack of Mermaids 'gender spectrum' printouts.

Lordfrontpaw · 06/03/2020 17:38

I’d be tempted to bake some and give them to people if the dont buy a frankencookie.

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 06/03/2020 17:39

It isn't even necessary to make a criticism of Mermaids- it simply isn't a charity focused on women.

This. Even if there were nothing wrong at all with Mermaids, it would be an insulting and inexplicable decision. The idea of having to consult with the (very likely male-dominated) LGBT org on this is so misogynist I don’t know where to start.

And given all that is wrong with Mermaids... I despair. I really do.

Julie Bindel Telegraph article

"In a blistering article in the Telegraph, Julie Bindel cites the Professor Selina Todd deplatforming, the removal of the dictionary definition of women because of 'hate speech' accusations and the myriad other examples of the colonisation of Women's day by those who insist 'women' is a choice based on feelings.

But my main bone of contention is reserved for the LGBT Foundation in Manchester. One of its events for IWD, advertised as being open to “all self-identifying women who identify as lesbian, bisexual, queer or questioning, all or part of the time” is run by a man who identifies as non-binary and is entitled, ‘Intro to rope bondage’. The idea that ‘playing’ with sadistic sexual practices is anything to do with women’s liberation beggars belief

ThePurported · 06/03/2020 18:06

It sounds like this employer lumps together everyone - women/LGBT - who is not a standard heterosexual man. Nice.

FrauleinF · 06/03/2020 18:45

@thepurported Men and non-men indeed. Or as certain people undoubtedly really see it - "real human beings" and "the chaff"...

I would be incandescent with rage over this, particularly as you can guarantee that during black history month, disability awareness day, LGBTQ month, or on international men's day they wouldn't expect the target group to share the limelight with anyone else, let alone select such a controversial "charity".

I mean, seriously, what are the odds of a women's charity being picked for trans day of visibility? About the same as sending all the donations to the Hitler appreciation society, I'll bet...

Juststopswimming · 06/03/2020 19:25

I think thats the thing - any other group who have a day/month dedicated to their particular struggle for equality wouldnt have to face this in eleventy billion years. Yet again another example of "budge up women" - which lets face it, is shit enough on any day - but on our actual real live day dedicated specifically to us!!! It takes the utter piss.
Also to those asking - the LGBTQ+ team (and workforce in general) are largely female...

Lordfrontpaw · 06/03/2020 19:26

Are they female women? Young silly types?

KeepYourWigOn · 06/03/2020 21:08

And this is how the Police Service NI has chosen to support IWD, by praising men. You honestly couldn't make it up.

PhoenixBuchanan · 06/03/2020 21:21

I'm very lazy in terms of "resistance" activities and would normally just give up, but this I'd challenge again. I'd want to know what the link is between Mermaids and women.

Is the LGBT+ committee in charge of all IWD activities? Do people now think that because LGBT is centred on issues of sex (or used to be) and females have a sex, that they are therefore one and the same? Confused It's just so bizarre.

Also dying to know what this company that starts with W is, which so many FWRers work for. Waterstones? Warburtons? Webuyanycar.com?

FrogsFrogs · 06/03/2020 22:38

Wow at the NI police thing. Talk about tone deaf!

The men get certificates for being nice lol

StealthPolarBear · 07/03/2020 10:25
