Not sure if anyone had seen this yet but came across it on twitter... Some choice comments in support of her on Twitter...

Did do a quick look but couldn't find any other thread on here about it.

thetab.com/uk/exeter/2020/02/28/exeter-lecturer-accused-of-transphobia-for-saying-only-females-menstruate-47008

Can't seem to create a clicky link on my phone so will do one later when I have access to the pc, but you can cut and paste for now.

*Eva Poen’s tweets were also criticised by Exeter Feminist Society, who told The Exeter Tab: “We are shocked to hear the transphobic comments made by a University lecturer.

“It is extremely upsetting that such views are being spread by staff, contributing to an unsafe environment for trans and non binary people.*

Hmm... ‘feminist society’... I think not.

Biological facts - creating unsafe environments. Best not to go outside. Let’s hope they are not do studying for biology/medical/nursing etc degrees.

Good for the academic for refusing to lie about biological reality at the behest of zealots.

SarahTancredi · 29/02/2020 08:24

One assumes all science text books have been thrown out?

The longer this goes on the crazier everybody sounds

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 29/02/2020 08:29

Well that makes an awful lot of people transphobic then.

2Rebecca · 29/02/2020 08:34

This is mad. Male people do not menstruate or have menopause in the abrupt way women do. If transphobia extends to believing in biology and transphobes get expelled from their jobs then Harrop and Webberley will be the only doctors left! Mad.

RoyalCorgi · 29/02/2020 08:35

Extremely upsetting? Unsafe?

What would these people do if a lecturer said or did something that was actually upsetting and made people unsafe, rather than just state biological reality?

Kit19 · 29/02/2020 08:38

What I don’t understand is why ppl are falling over themselves to listen to these children? When I was at university like a lot of students I thought anyone over 30 was an idiot, was convinced of the utter righteousness & originality of my views & was baffled that the world wasn’t being changed in favour of them.

Fortunately actual adults were in charge who just let me rant on but didn’t validate my special thinky thoughts

Now it very much seems that universities are running scared of a bunch of blue haired 19 year olds

MindTheMinotaur · 29/02/2020 08:39

Denounced for stating a biological fact. The cult sound more rabidly bonkers by the day. Facts matter.

midgebabe · 29/02/2020 08:41

If we didn't need the word women to distinguish a group that has distinct medical needs and experiances distinct significant discrimination , I'd be happy to let people have woman and be man myself. But it's such a bloody useful word.
I find it really hurtful however, as implying that woman is my identity implies that the discrimination is purely my own choice, I should have chosen another group to hang out with to avoid being raped. Victim blaming at its worst

BovaryX · 29/02/2020 08:42

Douglas Murray repeatedly makes this point. The adults have left the room. He also makes an interesting point about children relying on adults to help them distinguish between fantasy and reality. But now the adults are telling children they can magically transform into the opposite sex. The consequences of this will resonate through the courts for years to come.

Bezalelle · 29/02/2020 08:47

an unsafe environment for trans and non binary people

This is such absolute rubbish. Try living in a war zone.

Datun · 29/02/2020 08:48

It's because students are now consumers. Officially being able to rate universities according to their own criteria. Which encourages more consumers - or discourages them if the current batch are displeased.

'The customer is always right' means the students are now in charge.

SnuggyBuggy · 29/02/2020 08:51

This is why people are struggling to take transphobia seriously. Bit of an own goal

Kit19 · 29/02/2020 08:58

I think that’s so right Datun

Customer is queen and this is where we are

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 29/02/2020 08:58

I regularly find myself lost for words....

Of course only females menstruate. Why is that a radical thing to say? But it makes me a transphobe.

I am such a horrid transphobe that I have a trans person staying in my house as I type this...

Rockluvvindad · 29/02/2020 09:11

I know this struggle sometimes seems like it is men against women, but please believe me, this is not all men by a large margin. Women have far more support than they realise from men at large in this, but speaking personally, as a "gammon", I feel that my voice is not heard or my view important. I have no protected characteristics to use as woke armour should the eye of sauron turn on me, but I won't stop doing what I can for my daughters' futures even if that is only to keep them questioning the narrative... They are 19 and 16... The eldest at uni but still seems to question this so I am looking forward to a good conversation with her about the labour leadership contest when she comes out to visit me in a couple of weeks. The youngest, whilst as wonderfully inclusive and "nice" as many young people are these days is very GC even without me trying to keep her informed of stuff, so the message is getting through. The wheels will come off of this crazed ideology soon and hopefully before too many other children are mutilated for life...

Precisely. As RoyalCorgialso points out, the narcissistic, self involvement is so tedious. As is the total absence of proportionality.

FannyCann · 29/02/2020 09:12

Datsun am I right to think students also rate their lecturers ? Which is obviously a real problem for lecturers who want to discuss any inconvenient truths.

FannyCann · 29/02/2020 09:13

Sorry. Datun autocorrect...goes off to google datsun...

FannyCann · 29/02/2020 09:16

LOL I'd forgotten about Datsun cars. Apologies for the insult Datun and sorry for the derail. Grin

JellySlice · 29/02/2020 09:20

She didn't even say 'women'. She said 'only females menstruate'. Transmen are female. She was trans-inclusive.

Confused
SleepDeprivedElf · 29/02/2020 09:21

That is properly chilling

RandomMess · 29/02/2020 09:22

@FannyCann I think you have created a new slur word, you Datsun!

NonnyMouse1337 · 29/02/2020 09:33

As Datun mentions, universities have turned educational degrees into a product of consumerism. There is a tendency for many people to worship 'the market' and that this magical market can miraculously solve all world problems.

In terms of educational establishments, what it actually does is make people think that because they are paying vast sums of money to purchase their degrees, they can expect universities to cater to their whims since they are now effectively customers.
Universities are no longer a place for rigourous and challenging critical thinking; it's a place to have an 'inclusive and safe experience'. Students expect lecturers to tell them what they want to hear, else they will give them poor ratings and reviews. They expect university admin to do as they say.... And universities absolutely will because they are reliant upon student fees and brand image to stay 'competitive' in this glorious market.
