Local police headquarters flying the trans flag

My local police HQ are flying the trans flag, along with the rainbow flag and others as part of LGBT history month. I really want to ask when they’re going to fly a flag for women’s rights and the end to violence against women but I’m not sure I have the energy for it on Twitter. It’s made me so annoyed though! What can I say to them? Is there even a flag to fly for women?

I have seen several police cars in my area with a white ribbon logo on.

BoneAppleTeaa · 20/02/2020 20:21

Thanks user1495884620 I had not heard of the white ribbon campaign so had to google. Hopefully they are as visible in their support of this cause as they are the one I mentioned (which is also important).

I hadn't heard of the white ribbon either, but I guess this is to highlight violence against women?

Annasgirl · 20/02/2020 20:26

What is a Trans flag? Not being goady - just a WTF moment. I actually thought when I clicked in that you were going to mean Flying the Flag as a metaphor, but now I think you mean there is a Trans flag?

Hopefully this link will work, showing you what I mean.

I hadn't heard of the white ribbon either until I saw it on police cars and googled it, but yes, it seems to refer to a campaign to stop violence against women.

BoneAppleTeaa · 20/02/2020 20:37

Looks like my police force supports it but wrapped it up under domestic violence (still very important!) rather than specifically about violence against women and girls www.leics.police.uk/news/leicestershire/news/2019/november/force-supports-white-ribbon-day-and-16-days-of-action-campaign/

There is a woman definition flag you can get from Standing for Women, I've asked my local council to fly it on International Womens Day.

Ask them to fly it and if they say no then ask them why, I wouldn't do it on Twitter though.

You can also ask them via an FOI on WhatDoTheyKnow about how much they have spent on the flags, who decided to fly them etc but if it was me I would email them direct.

I'd be interested to see what happens so do @ me OP of you want to.

BoneAppleTeaa · 20/02/2020 20:41

I don’t know how to share a link to twitter but looks like Fair Cop have already picked this up.

BoneAppleTeaa · 20/02/2020 20:42

@OhHolyJesus I was contemplating submitting an FOI for this reason. Thanks for the suggestion on the flag, I’m going to do this.

Seriously? You take exception to a campaign against domestic violence because it isn't specifically about women? Even if you (general you) don't give a stuff about adult male victims, children can be male and at risk and vulnerable too.

BoneAppleTeaa · 20/02/2020 20:59

@DidoLamenting not at all, but I can see why my post came across that way.

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 20/02/2020 21:01

No Dido, if you follow the conversation you will see the OP did not mean it in that way

GrumpyGran8 · 20/02/2020 21:10

What is a Trans flag?
Here it is. And yes, the colours really were chosen to represent blue for boys and pink for girls. What the white is supposed to be I've no idea.

I've looked, but there doesn't seem to be a flag just for women. But if there was, I want it to be this old WLM symbol!

Email the forces PR team. You'll probably find there's a LGBTQ association within the Force who have pushed for it.

itsnotthesamewithoutLang · 21/02/2020 15:27

This is the flag that Standing for Women wants to see flown on 8th March from all public buildings that have flown the trans flag. If they refuse they need to explain why, and have their reasons made public.

BoneAppleTeaa · 21/02/2020 17:03

Thank you itsnotthesamewithoutLang are people just directing to the website or actually supplying the flag?

I wish I had the balls to fly one.

Or do I mean ovaries!

Police cars in my area have the rainbow flag on one side and the trans flag on the other.

I really can't get my head around the trans flag. The rainbow flag has all the colours 'everyone is welcome, whatever colour you are you are still in the rainbow' why is another flag needed? And one that's so gender reductive you're are blue or pink choose one'

Mockersisrightasusual · 21/02/2020 18:41

The Effing Union Flag is supposed to represent everyone. It ought to be enough.

JellySlice · 21/02/2020 19:02

And when will they fly the Coexist flag for inter-religious acceptance and tolerance?

Oh, wait...

JellySlice · 21/02/2020 19:04

The police are supposed to protect everyone. Not show any partiality.

Goosefoot · 21/02/2020 19:10

After living in a town that had a major controversy about what flags the town hall could fly, I came to the conclusion that really it's best if towns, cities, police services, stick to flying official flags of the country, town, etc. Otherwise it very quickly becomes this sort of free for all of groups competing for space and the gods help you if you leave one out.

EmptyFieldOfFucks · 21/02/2020 23:08

All the individual components which make up the rainbow flag, have their own flags too - rainbow encompasses all but it's often these days taken to mostly represent lesbians and gay people. To me, it still encompasses all.

The white stripe on the trans flag - if blue and pink mean male and female, then perhaps it stands for the crossover, and / or the middle ground, or non binary.

I don't know

But I think it's important to fly it. I do think it would be right, and appropriate to also fly the women's flag. And to also fly one for stamping out racism. Plus possibly one for us disabled people and one with the Sophie Lancaster Foundation in mind.
