DH gave me the heads up - it's on at 10am. Will see if I can tune in :)

HJ talking about ageism too - I'm feeling quite emotional at hearing all this openly discussed.

GlomOfNit · 07/02/2020 10:35

Bloody brilliant stuff. Thank you WH for covering this. And thank you Professor Sophie Scott, who has a very healthy and visible media presence quite apart from her international academic reputation, for having the bravery for speaking out about these issues on radio. (Her Twitter feed shows that she's been courageous about talking up about this for some time.)

Novina · 07/02/2020 10:35

HJ doing a great job.

happydappy2 · 07/02/2020 10:36

They got in about men in women’s prisons-yay

ContessaferJones · 07/02/2020 10:36

Oh that was amazing!!

Overall very positive although that was mainly because Helen Joyce managed to get many issues introduced in a short hand way rather than Jane Garvey seeking to inform the audience.

Beamur · 07/02/2020 10:37

Really good and clear. Nice work by all concerned.

Novina · 07/02/2020 10:38

Great interviewees. Wonder what the response will be.

ContessaferJones · 07/02/2020 10:38

I'm going to give JG the benefit of the doubt and suggest that she did it that way on purpose because #balance. But that was simply fab :)

HJ and SS - well done!

WH - more emphasis on content and why this matters please

JG did say the gender issue will be discussed in later program... we’ll see...

LilyRed · 07/02/2020 10:39

Just managed to listen - Thankyou WH! Thankyou to all the women who spoke and attended. I think most, if not all, points were briefly covered at last.

MsMcWibble · 07/02/2020 10:40

Very pleased. About time.
The point about younger women being scared about speaking up was spot on.

AbsintheFriends · 07/02/2020 10:42

Part of what made it so effective, honest and informative was that it was actually all about women's concerns and issues being dismissed as bigotry. So JG wasn't really able to do that 'balance' ('some might say...' etc) thing without demonstrating the problem. It meant both women were able to speak without frustrating interruption and derailment.

Melroses · 07/02/2020 10:51

Very enjoyable and uplifting piece - really worth listening over and over again.

WH looking at sex and gender in the future

FaFoutis · 07/02/2020 10:58

I heard this, it gave me actual hope.
Thank you Women's Hour!

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 07/02/2020 10:59

Well my goodness me, that was wonderful. Helen Joyce was magnificent, and Sophie Scott too. So many points calmly mentioned to pique listeners' interest.

I'm going to give JG the benefit of the doubt and suggest that she did it that way on purpose because #balance.

This is likely, in my view.

Well done to all concerned!

ArranUpsideDown · 07/02/2020 11:03

A quick glance at Twitter shows that there are some very positive comments about the coverage.

And that Sophie Scott and her colleagues are coming under a fair amount of pressure for their courage.

ChattyLion · 07/02/2020 11:05

They sound like excellent interviewees, looking forward to listening to this!

AmericanSlang · 07/02/2020 11:13

I was the one who mentioned Mumsnet FWR! - you lot did literally re-radicalise me (at the age of 52!) and led me to check out Jane Clare Jones and many other clever, funny, articulate feminists :)

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 07/02/2020 11:18

It's incredible how unusual it was to hear women being able to speak, uninterrupted.

The "trans" word was only mentioned about 2 or three times, almost in passing, too.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 07/02/2020 11:24

Thank You AmericanSlang I hope your advertising finds us some new recruits Grin

SurpriseSparDay · 07/02/2020 11:30

Well done, AmericanSlang. Star

AmericanSlang · 07/02/2020 11:38

Thank youBlush I'm a bit embarrassed, being a rather inarticulate lurker, but the Woman's Hour interviewer asked how I got "here" (ie the conference) so I told her! I was totally oblivious to so much of the stuff going on until I arrived at this board, and I'm very grateful to all the intelligent and articulate women here who woke me up

cwg1 · 07/02/2020 11:39

Huge congratulations and thanks to WPUK and all the other groups and women - including, of course, FWR vipers, who have worked and worked and pulled and pulled. Great recognition for all your efforts Flowers

AmericanSlang - you were fab!
