Freedom of Speech.

Just turned on to GMB to catch the end of a discussion between the brilliant Prof Stock, President? of the Students' Union, Piers and Susannah.

I think the debate stated around 8.40 for those who want to watch on Plus 1 and ITV player.

I only caught a bit (and my signal was breaking up), during which Prof Stock was discussing self ID and the restrictions and consequences on discussing this issue on campus.

Naturally, the SU man was being woke.

Good to see this on mainstream TV.

I agree it is good to hear this on mainstream tv, and despite me not liking Piers Morgan, he is definitely GC and always makes good points when this subject is featured on GM.

I didn't see it but I hope the rest of the discussion was better than this:

Clip in which the silencing of women and the denial of biological reality is likened to racism. But, but, he forgot to throw in the fight for gay rights that usually accompanies such defence.

Top comment: the SU man knew which sex to talk over.

Will watch it properly on ITV Player.

The SU man consistently talked over prof stock who hardly got a word in.

SU man referred to it as generational unkindness and that by no platforming and stifling discussion they were actually standing up for free speech or some such bollocks.

LayAllYourLoveOnMe · 29/01/2020 09:42

"we used to not shut down racists".....

he did make a fair point when he said at least he showed up on the programme.

I thought prof Stock got a lot across in a few seconds and I will certainly be reusing what she said (we need rowantrees to set it out really). But essentially both good and bad ideas need to be tested - that is the function of a university.

HandsOffMyLangCleg · 29/01/2020 09:42

On ITV +1 now

sidetrack here but does anyone have the username "langcleg way to tipperary" yet?

HandsOffMyLangCleg · 29/01/2020 09:51

Some snippets, typed in as I watched..

The City Uni SU young man talked of
"The lived experiences"

Minority students and free speech

Piers: "TG athletes are dominating female sports."

SU male: "Once upon a time we wouldn't cancel racists or misogynists..."

He adds: "Moving forward...
Freedom of speech

Dr Stock "There's confusion between discussion ideas with personalised debate.."

SU male: "inter generational unkindness Kathleen is spearheading this"

Inntergenerational.unkindness

Oh dear, he really is lost...Confused

OP posts:
HandsOffMyLangCleg · 29/01/2020 09:52

Let's try that again...

Intergenerational unkindness

OP posts:
ahagwearsapointybonnet · 29/01/2020 10:01

He said "Society is moving forward" I think. And Doc Stock said that discussing ideas was not the same as making personal insults (or words to that effect). That's just from the clip, not watched the whole thing yet but will try to later. Looks like Dr Stock did well, but I hope she got more chance to speak/be heard in the rest of it though, too much being drowned out by men in that clip!

oohooh me please!

"unkind"

women must be kind.....

BovaryX · 29/01/2020 12:36

I didn't see this, but based on the snippet from HandsoffmyLang once again, we can see the same tactics used by the #no debate fanatics. An immediate accusation of racism, in this case an attempt to associate Kathleen with racists and sexists. This is deployed quickly, often it's the opening gambit. The aim of this tawdry technique
is to distract attention from the idea being discussed and focus it on the character of the speaker and to warn anyone watching that they too will be vilified unless they keep their mouths shut.

Mockers2020Vision · 29/01/2020 12:39

Intergenerational Unkindness would be closing down the bank of Mum & Dad.

GMB are good at adding YouTube clips of each segment, usually on day of broadcast.

Goosefoot · 29/01/2020 12:47

I know people who claim that deplatforming is about protecting free speech as well. They see it as similar to controlling fake news or propaganda.

BovaryX · 29/01/2020 12:56

DuLang
Cheers for the link. Kathleen Stock is very good and I am pleased to see she called him out for that deliberate attempt to associate her with racists and sexists His denial was laughable. She's got it nailed about outrage culture and how it threatens critical thinking, individuality and freedom of thought.

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 29/01/2020 13:09

It’s a shame she didn’t get more air time but that she was calm and not talking over others made the time she had very affective.

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 29/01/2020 13:10

Effective. Even.

HandsOffMyLangCleg · 29/01/2020 15:32

Thanks for the clips.

Kathleen is always so calm and measured even in the face of intergenerational unkindness, displayed by woke willied wallies at university who continue to threaten, doxx and silence women.

Great to see the clip thanks DuLANG.

RummidgeGeneral · 29/01/2020 18:46

Interesting clip. Thanks

Dolorabelle · 29/01/2020 21:23

My god the body language on that young man - masculinist arrogance anyone?
