Glasgow councillor: women haven’t got equality cos they’re not organised

Mhairi Hunter is an SNP councillor in Glasgow. She supports self Id and is Nicola Sturgeon’s campaign manager. She has claimed on Twitter that the problems women face is not due to out biology but to the fact we’re not organised. I suspect this reflects the thinking (using that verb very loosely) in the Scot govt. It’s our own fault we face discrimination, violence etc cos we’re not organised. Although as they seem unable to define what a woman is, I don’t know how they know women aren’t organised...

It’s hard to be ‘well organised’ when you have to balance activism with child and elder care and political meetings happen on weekday evenings.

FrogsFrogs · 26/01/2020 17:20

Just showed that tweet in op to DH who looked no nonplussed and unimpressed and 10 yo DD wanted to see and she wasn't impressed either.

So thousands of years of oppression globally, structural oppression and discrimination all over the world, all the history, all of what is happening now, yeah just disregard that. Girls who are aborted for being female just aren't being organised enough. Trufact.

This person is an mra old school.

Imnobody4 · 26/01/2020 17:30

Yeah and the reason the slave trade lasted so long was black people just weren't organised enough. The woman is an idiot.

AutumnRose1 · 26/01/2020 17:32

Imnobody isn’t that what Kanye West said?

They can join each other on the total Muppet bench.

PlayYouLikeAShark · 26/01/2020 17:37

Women aren't as 'organised' cos we've got a disproportionate amount of other people's shit to deal with & often have more barriers to overcome as a result. Consider the make up of the very successful lobbyists out there - how many are encumbered by caring responsibilities & limited in their income/free time as a result? It's by no means a blanket rule here but the vast majority of those who are laser focused on eroding women's rights are very much uninhibited by other responsibilities that get in the way of their work. That's a huge part of why women, left with the younger 'libfem' types yet to face the reality of pregnancy/maternity/parenthood, in charge of Women’s orgs, we end up with the god awful capitulation on hard fought for rights to appease the patriarchal zealots.

Which is why the EA2010 & PSED was supposed to ensure public bodies/orgs would remember to think about how policy decisions impacted women when looking at trying to make changes.

That eejit councillor knows how this works cos she never made sure women or parents were informed about Glasgow Life's policy to allow unrestricted male inclusion in their leisure centre changing rooms/classes to actually have the chance to say 'hawd a minute'.

Honestly, the blatant deceit & disingenuous attempts at 'gotchas' just make them look more absurd & ridiculous every time this happens.

MorrisZapp · 26/01/2020 17:41

Wait, what? I thought she was a random nutcase on twitter. She's a Councillor, and has direct access to the First Minister?

WHAT THE FUCK

AutumnRose1 · 26/01/2020 17:44

I completely disagree that women aren't as organised anyway.

Plus, how many men's rights have been hit by law recently?

Binterested · 26/01/2020 17:47

Good Lord.

Tbh the periods and the babies are a walk in the park compared to the fact we’ve been systematically owned, denied legal rights including the right to bodily autonomy, the right to own property, the right own the product of our own labour (including any children we may have), the right to vote and the right to participate in any number of professions. Sounds a lot like slavery? Was actually slavery.

Does she tell black people to shake a leg because if they’d stirred their stumps they wouldn’t have been captured by slave masters?

youllhavehadyourtea · 26/01/2020 17:51

Add yet when women do get organised , i.e. forwomen scotland, the Scottish government won't meet them to hear their concerns.

youllhavehadyourtea · 26/01/2020 17:53

And when a petition to uphold women's rights is organised, she doesn't sign it.

PermanentTemporary · 26/01/2020 17:54

Apparently if Donald Trump breathes we should all stop breathing.

WrathofAsyouwereKIop · 26/01/2020 17:55

I would be better organised too, if I only had myself to think about...

youllhavehadyourtea · 26/01/2020 17:57

WrathofAsyouwereKIop

Quite.

EverardDigby · 26/01/2020 18:01

I think we have been pretty organised, we've set up lots of women's organisations that the state has now coopted as its own. We've got women away from abusive relationships, out of prison, helped women keep their children, supported traumatised women, etc. etc. She's talking many sorts of nonsense.

ThePurported · 26/01/2020 18:02

Why does Hunter think that women need to get organised at all, if biology doesn't mean a thing?

KTJean · 26/01/2020 18:09

Historically speaking women have not been as organised as men because trades unions denied them access, argued against equal pay (men should be paid a family wage, female workers were apparently only supporting themselves), and women themselves have always had domestic responsibilities and less time and money to organise. Domestic responsibilities also mean I need to stop writing and attend to my children now, thus proving my own point.
I have no time at all for Mhairi Hunter, I am afraid.

LonginesPrime · 26/01/2020 18:09

FFS, who does she think is facilitating the men's ability to be organised???

Lojoh · 26/01/2020 18:09

My guess is she means politically organised? Not that women are more flaky but that men have more political power. As in article 23.4 eg:

The right to organize with others to fight for better working conditions is a universal human right: Everyone has the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of his interests. • United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 23.4

I don't think it's an unreasonable or crazy view that men have more and more powerful political blocs.

RunningWild12 · 26/01/2020 18:10

The ignorance and arrogance of many elected members know no bounds. They are so far removed from the lives of their electorates and so determined to maintain power whatever the cost, normal democratic processes are ignored.

It all feels very Ruritanian, with power entirely vested in and around the court of Nicola Sturgeon. The majority of us expected to forelock tug, do as we’re telt and place our cross on the ballot paper where she says so come any election (or referendum). Telling us the consultation on GRA reform was about convincing us that there’s no conflict between self id and our sex based rights sums up the approach. Not going to listen, govt know best, we must obey.
That’ll be right.

Women are notoriously organised aren't we?

Nature / nurture, it's a part of our proscribed role and why we are naturally better suited to lower paid support roles and also often doing pretty much all home org etc for free.

So we are good and organised when it suits and simultaneously not organised enough when it suits. Rightho.

DeeZastris · 26/01/2020 18:13

We might not be as “organised” but that is because men stopped us. Denied an education; denied the vote; not allowed to own property; not allowed a bank account; needed a man to have a mortgage; blah fucking blah.

It’s actually amazing what we have achieved!

This highlights someone who revels in her own pig shit thick ignorance.

FrogsFrogs · 26/01/2020 18:13

'Not that women are more flaky but that men have more political power.'

Her point is that we don't have the power because we don't work enough at it/ don't care, rather than because of millennia of global structural oppression. She's talkingb shit. It's victim blaming writ large.

Mockers2020Vision · 26/01/2020 18:15

To be organised, you need an organ.

(Report on Beeb website says naturist swim club seeks more female nudeys because they have 'mostly male members.')

Cwenthryth · 26/01/2020 18:20

Oh FFS! How ridiculous. Does this go for all axes of oppression then? It’s everyone’s fault for not being as organised as straight white able-bodied men?
