New ‘this girl can’ ad praised for showing tampon string

On the one hand - great for showing that being on your period doesn’t stop you from taking part in sport. But having been educated about some of the horrific fetishisation of tampons and visible strings that goes on among certain networks am I wrong to feel uncomfortable about it? I don’t bleed any more but when I did I don’t think I ever left a string hanging out of my knickers either.

It doesn't normalise girls doing sports during menstruation any more than showing her with a tampon in a package would. And like someone else said, who ever has seen this in life - I don't think I've ever noticed a tampon string. Not that it never happens but its certainly not a usual thing.

And TBH I don't really think lack of normalisation is why some girls avoid sports when menstruating. If anything the opposite, the fact that here is little accommodation in many more serious sports for girls who struggle with tampons or their period leads them to quit. The expectation s they se a tampon and that is easy and will work for everyone - even quite young girls. Tampons and moon cups don't work for you, well you'd better forget about the swim team because as soon as you miss a meet you are off the team.

I hope they do one with a women over 40-odd in it next

And over 50, 60 etc without them looking like clean shiny active grey Grannies out of an incontinence advert.

PlanDeRaccordement · 16/01/2020 17:51

I just watched the ad. The tampon string didn’t bother me. That’s a plus for encouraging.

What bothered me was part of the ad showing the woman in bed on her period with a hot water bottle while the music was saying “I know I got bad habits”.

That’s just shaming women who’s periods are actually too painful for them to do sport.

Eh? Tampon strings are not meant to be on show, surely if anything it might put people off sport thinking they are going to be underdressed.

Anyway, I have never got past the fact that the phrase "this girl can" is used to encourage women to do sport. It is a perfectly good phrase for children.

TheSandman clearly Grin

Maybe it's because it's Yaniv that I find the thought so viscerally nauseating Blush

TheSandman · 16/01/2020 18:29

I have no idea who (or what) Yaniv is/are.

MrsWednesdayteatime · 16/01/2020 18:34

Don't the instructions in a tampon box say to put the strings to the front, not dangle them out of your kegs? Won't there be an issue with blood wicking down the strings?

CallofDoodee · 16/01/2020 18:58

Just watched it, i think the string bit is pretty well done to be honest, although I would worry about that catching!

I'm so glad my tampon days are behind me, mooncup all the way now!

Michelleoftheresistance · 16/01/2020 18:58

Urgh. I swear, the only boundary left to break is someone taking a dump in front of cameras on television. There are some things no one needs to see, and no one leaves their tampon string dangling out of their pants for obvious reasons to anyone who actually menstruates as opposed to plays with tampons for feelz.

I'm starting to want a quick exit from this world the next generation seem to be busy creating, they're welcome to it.

CountFosco · 16/01/2020 18:59

Anyway, I have never got past the fact that the phrase "this girl can" is used to encourage women to do sport.

It's referencing the phrases 'girls can't run/throw/play football'. That is all. Can you suggest a better alternative?

slipperywhensparticus · 16/01/2020 18:59

@TheSandman

Google Jessica yaniv they are the person that sued Muslim home workers for refusing to wax their ummm lady balls?

slipperywhensparticus · 16/01/2020 19:00

@CountFosco

This woman can?

Melroses · 16/01/2020 19:10

Urgh. I swear, the only boundary left to break is someone taking a dump in front of cameras on television

That's a fetish too.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 16/01/2020 19:11

Scrimshaw that one is great. Love the mix of women in it.

Goosefoot · 16/01/2020 19:20

Won't there be an issue with blood wicking down the strings?

Yes, and if it's touching cloth it could potentially wick into that and make a stain.

They've done it to get in the news, the only barrier they care about breaking is the financial barrier to more publicity.

Goosefoot · 16/01/2020 19:22

I swear, the only boundary left to break is someone taking a dump in front of cameras on television.

That will be the laxative commercials. Freeing us by making our poo a topic of office chit chat.

Wait till you see what they'll do with the ED ads.

I'm not a big fan of the breastfeeding mother in it. If you can breastfeed and exercise, brilliant, good for you. But for many months during exclusively breastfeeding I found it just too much to contemplate (and logistically difficult being away from the baby). I say that as someone who regularly exercised before pregnancy and who does plenty again now I'm not breastfeeding!

HorseWithNoTimeForThis · 16/01/2020 19:50

I have no idea who (or what) Yaniv is/are.

Lucky you.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 16/01/2020 19:58

They've done it to get in the news,

Of course. And it's worked so far. :)

HorseWithNoTimeForThis · 16/01/2020 20:04

you’re being precious..

Thank you for your input; someone will get back to you as soon as possible.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 18/01/2020 06:29

It's still good for women to see women doing it so they know it's OK to try though. There is no reason not to exercise while breastfeeding.

user1480880826 · 18/01/2020 06:47

That was my first thought @tobee. If the string is so long that it can hang out of your knickers then you haven’t put your tampon in properly.

Costacoffeeplease · 18/01/2020 07:04

Haven’t seen this particular ad but can’t bear them in general, just fuck off with your patronising shit

Lumene · 18/01/2020 08:09

No need to show a tampon string that’s private and no one else’s business. Other less intrusive ways to make the same point.

Lweji · 18/01/2020 08:14

GrinGrin at the perverts could be having a kick out of it.
I wonder how you ever leave the house.
