Cry Me A Bloody River: Article about the Pathetic Plight of Period-Plagued Trans Men

Lord, shrink me a violin so I can play my sad little heart out about the very very very special pain that our uteri having brothers have in getting and using period products. According to this article, period products are expensive, embarrassing, and inaccessible. Whereas for boring old Cisters, they are apparently free, and we gaily run through our offices waving tampons like torches and flapping our pads like happy handpuppets. Oh and we find them somehow "in stores?" Another interesting factlet: TM find it embarrassing to rip open tampon packages in the men's room. Much as women might feel if, um, males were allowed in the women's room? Just sayin.

DH makes a point of wearing pink shirts cos he likes pink shirts cos they suit him.

Does this make DH trans?

DodoPatrol · 13/01/2020 19:17

Couldn’t read the whole thing on my phone, but any young girl can be distressed and find it embarrassing and difficult to cope with her first few periods, even if they’re nothing out of the ordinary. We all muddled through together, on the whole.

If this young person was out of step with female contemporaries because of gender dysphoria; and late to reach puberty because of blockers; and had eyes screwed shut against biological reality because of believing self to ‘be a boy’, then I can see that the usual levels of resentment and awkwardness in learning to manage a perfectly normal function would build up into stressy indignation.

I’ll cut the kid some slack for not realising that all of this is just normal crap and you can’t actually identify out of it.

My DH has some beautiful Ted Baker pink suit trousers, he absolutely rocks them. Definitely all manWink

@JacquesHammer I'm with you. There's a lot to get annoyed about in this article, but the dismissiveness of some over the expense and difficulties that some women experience over a lifetime of periods is a bit shit.

CoolCarrie · 13/01/2020 19:35

FFS! What a load of crap, oh poor men , the rustle of the pad wrapper is soooo embarrassing for the poor wee souls.

RedToothBrush · 13/01/2020 19:35

If they want to make grown up, life changing irreversible decisions then frankly they need the maturity to deal with having periods otherwise they aren't in a position where they should be able to make decisions. What happens if they are in the men's toilets and they are challenged by a man? How are they going to handle that if they can't handle managing periods?

I'm sorry but being honest about reality isn't something you should 'cut kids slack over' in this situation.

They need to be able to handle difficult situations without people molycoddling them constantly.

InionEile · 13/01/2020 19:43

Women and girls face discrimination and exclusion around the world, sometimes even death, due to menstrual taboos but sure let’s focus on the 0.1% of the population that are oppressed by a lack of tampons in the men’s bathrooms they are voluntarily choosing to use instead of the women’s bathrooms or a gender neutral space. Screw those women in poor countries wedded to their boring outmoded biological sex binary.

Also noticing how ironic it is that me typing ‘menstrual’ autocorrected to ‘men struggling’ on my phone. Even predictive text wants me to think about the menz and their feelings Hmm

SarahTancredi · 13/01/2020 19:47

I never disagreed they could he expensive. I know full well that there r medical conditions and situations where you end up spending more.

My comment was based on the article wherenoeriod poverty apparently affects transmen sooooo much more.

If that expense is down to having to search high and low for some obscure pricy brand to avoid colours or wording then that's a luxury alot of women cant afford and to claim you are somehow more adversely affected as a result is an insult. They could buy a cheaper brand.

DodoPatrol · 13/01/2020 22:28

I don’t think that is what they’re saying - it’s that trans people are more likely to be in poverty and therefore find it harder to afford tampons.

Who knows if that’s true, but I don’t think it was because of trying to find blue packaging.

I do have some sympathy for the young and confused. I don’t think they should be making this sort of decision. And I think the usual period hassle is probably worse than average if you have no girl friends going through the same, are using the wrong loo without appropriate facilities, and are terrified of the whole thing because it reminds you remorselessly of biological reality.

God, we really do need some better solutions for these daft youngsters.

SarahTancredi · 13/01/2020 22:51

That's never really been addressed though has it. why are they more likely to be in poverty. I mean the law protects them from being discriminated against in employment. There is nothing stopping them from working and doing the same jobs as everyone else. I mean we are mo longer able to say it's a mental illness so what we have is apparently perfectly healthy people in healthy bodies even if they dont "match" with the law on their side protecting them from being fired for their transgender status.

So why are they so much worse off?

SingingSands · 13/01/2020 23:04

“Having a period already causes me a lot of [gender] dysphoria, but this dysphoria becomes heightened when I have to shop for a product that is labeled as ‘women’s health’ and in most cases, is pretty and pink,” Jones explained.

Some transgender and gender-nonconforming people who menstruate, like Jones, say when the products are categorized as women’s products, they can feel alienated — and may even avoid purchasing them altogether.

And here's the crux of the issue. Feelings. Confused feelings.

Melroses · 13/01/2020 23:08

"But it’s a challenge of being trans that often gets overlooked, which is why I’m so motivated to talk about it (and why I was thrilled to be a part of Pink Parcel’s campaign to help normalize periods)."

Pink was fine in 2018

OutFoxxedByABadger · 13/01/2020 23:08

Well yes. I imagine if you identify as a man, having a period is an even more clusterfuck of an experience than if you identify as an actual woman.

I mean, it's one of very many reasons why I think we should be talking to people who want to transition and helping them mentally rather than instant and complete affirmation and life altering drugs.

SarahTancredi · 13/01/2020 23:11

Well yes. I imagine if you identify as a man, having a period is an even more clusterfuck of an experience than if you identify as an actual woman

But now we are all being told that jen can have periods too. So again what we have is healthy people in healthy bodies undergoing "treatment" aka affirmation encountering what we are all told is now a male biological function.

So again why is it traumatic?

It's almost as if they want to he a victim somehow.

OutFoxxedByABadger · 14/01/2020 00:02

Because nobody actually believes that shite and the cognitive dissonance must be a bitch.

TheTigersBride · 14/01/2020 00:21

Is the aisle in the shop labelled "women's health"?

I'm not sure my local Boots has any labelling. Sanitary products are in the same aisle as cotton wool and nappies.

And as for all being pink- Tampax is green/ blue, Lilets is dark blue, Always is purple, Kotex is black or white. Bodyform has pink along with blue, green, orange, Yellow, green and blue also very common on supermarket brands- pink actually is probably the least used colour.

I had 6 menopausal hot flush sessions pretty much in a row yesterday evening. I was wearing trousers, a man's T-shirt and no makeup and it still stop it. I probably have some rogue facial hair too.Angry
Perhaps the over fifties "girls" would like to swap with me to experience womanhood at our age.

bellinisurge · 14/01/2020 06:30

still "didn't " stop it. Wish it had stopped it😂

StealthPolarBear · 14/01/2020 06:42

When will this crap end? What has to happen before society has had enough?

StealthPolarBear · 14/01/2020 06:43

Belljni you need to wear something pink. You'll then find you enjoy and fully appreciate your wonanliness.
That's a good point, does a tw of 50 expect to have periods? Many of them are of that age range, right?

NonnyMouse1337 · 14/01/2020 06:58

I think you'll find a number of them have convinced themselves that they do actually have periods. Confused Hence all the references they make to tampons and asking (much younger) women about them.

Pulpfiction1 · 14/01/2020 07:00

How come lady dick is a thing but trans men can have manly menseas

SarahTancredi · 14/01/2020 07:14

When will this crap end? What has to happen before society has had enough?

I have no idea. I mean right now as I've already said we have the disability and mental health dx removed. The need to even do anything to yourself removed. You can get your co workers fired for using wrong pronouns. Kids are being taught men can have periods and the oenis is a female organ and we have removed the word woman from huge numbers of websites products and campaigns.

The law protects then above all else. In fact the victims end up being turned into the criminals by the police should there be a crime and the victim refuses to call them he/she. Trans status basically places you above the law.

So what do you do when you have lost your victim status and ergo your leverage?

You make ever increasing ridiculous demands . This period thing is really scraping the barrel mind but this is all have to make them feel special
