Cry Me A Bloody River: Article about the Pathetic Plight of Period-Plagued Trans Men

Lord, shrink me a violin so I can play my sad little heart out about the very very very special pain that our uteri having brothers have in getting and using period products. According to this article, period products are expensive, embarrassing, and inaccessible. Whereas for boring old Cisters, they are apparently free, and we gaily run through our offices waving tampons like torches and flapping our pads like happy handpuppets. Oh and we find them somehow "in stores?" Another interesting factlet: TM find it embarrassing to rip open tampon packages in the men's room. Much as women might feel if, um, males were allowed in the women's room? Just sayin.

Bonkers just bonkers

And anyway, there is nothing whatsoever unmanly about pink, purple or flowers.

Indeed. But of course, it's nothing to do with stereotypes!

As a post menopausal woman, I have to say that the very best thing about it is no more periods. I had 40 years of them and I was glad to see the back of them. I'm sure I'm not alone!

Melioration · 13/01/2020 10:15

I don’t think it will stop the cosplay. It just means the play without the cos with a more shocking effect. Anyone can do the cos nowadays.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/01/2020 12:05

Completely agree, Clymene! Life without periods is bliss.

Findumdum1 · 13/01/2020 13:18

That's another thng that puzzles me - where are the legions of transwomen/men cos playing being a perimenopausal, menopausal or post-menopausal woman? After all, biological women usually spend at least as much of their lives not having periods than they do having them, assuming they live to 80, possibly more years without them. So this is a big part of womanhood that you'd think they'd be keen to experience.

But I guess being middle aged, having hot flushes, unpredicatble periods, mood swings, being written off and all the other things women put up with once done with periods is less alluring than being a pre pubescent girl bleeding from their naughty bits. Not that it's a sexual fetish or anything, of course.

Of course it's not a fetish. The fact 50-odd-year old transwomen are referring to themselves as "girls" and giggling about makeup is entirely normal and natural and exactly how women in the same age group behave.

Durgasarrow · 13/01/2020 15:23

Is this package really too feminine and flowery for a man to purchase?

Of all things, I didn't think it was possible to make a complaint about your experiences of menstruation come across as deeply narcissistic. But that's the gift of this movement. Whatever you name, an adherent of the movement will be able to detail a very special reason why they suffer so much more than most.

When a woman talks to me about her period difficulties, I usually feel an instinctive solidarity and sympathy with her. Because I've never had another woman who accepted her femaleness use the opportunity to make out that her difficulties were of a uniquely oppressed order because of the colours on the boxes or the fact that you can't get them free with every Gregg's pasty.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 13/01/2020 17:09

Oopsie. I got my first strike. Apparently someone is feeling rather sensitive. 😁

EmmaGrundyForPM · 13/01/2020 17:52

The colour coding on Lillet tampon boxes is crucial as far as I'm concerned. Day 1 and 2 when I'm bleeding heavily its orange.
I switch to purple on day 3 and if I'm lucky I can move down to green by the end of the day. Day 4 is green, day 5 is pink. Then just a pad for day 6.

Men don't have periods. Period.

SarahTancredi · 13/01/2020 17:57

The strings are also colour coded with lilets.

But then real men arent afraid of colours so it shouldnt matter should it?

CallofDoodee · 13/01/2020 18:32

“Having a period already causes me a lot of [gender] dysphoria, but this dysphoria becomes heightened when I have to shop for a product that is labeled as ‘women’s health’ and in most cases, is pretty and pink,” Jones explained.

How fucking insulting to suggest that all women are absolutely fine with 'pretty and pink'.

Just fuck off.

CallofDoodee · 13/01/2020 18:37

It's the flip side of TW wanting/pretending to have periods because of course embracing and celebrating your periods is so womanly.

Yes, actual women just luuuuuurve getting their period apparently. It's just such an exciting time each month - especially if you are trying to get pregnant...

Oh and they are always getting 'caught short' and asking each other for tampons in public toilets. Sometimes a teenage girl might even ask a total stranger for help with how to insert a tampon......

Findumdum1 · 13/01/2020 18:57

I bought these tampons today from Morrisions. The packets are Green and Orange and the tampons are white with blue strings. They cost 70p each. This is enough to last me one and a half periods. So I buy a pack of super and a pack of super plus every 2nd month. That's £1.40 every 2 months. Or £8.40 per year.

It's all just lies isn't it?

That men have periods? Yes.

That some women spend considerable amounts on sanitary protection? No, that’s true.

Findumdum1 · 13/01/2020 19:05

Some women may have to buy more that me and spend more than my £8.40 a year, yes (and some less). But even double the amount of tampons and pads as well, maybe 3x, 4x as much? so £30 or £40 per year? Even £50 odd per year. That is £5 a month. Or worse case £10 a month. That is not a huge amount of money and that is not period poverty, in the West, where all these transmen reporting being triggerred are located. Neither is the packaging in any way stereotypically girly or pretty.

JacquesHammer · 13/01/2020 19:07

£10 is a huge amount of money for some people.

Look, I think the article and sentiment is batshit. But people are picking up on the wrong bits to object to.

Findumdum1 · 13/01/2020 19:07

And in the US where many of them are loacted they will be spending a lot more than £5/10 per month on cross sex hormones. Even the one in the Uk will be spending at least that on prescription charges.

All. Lies.

Ereshkigal · 13/01/2020 19:11

And anyway, there is nothing whatsoever unmanly about pink, purple or flowers. Plenty of men wear pink, purple and floral shirts for example.

Yes. And there are no sexist stereotypes involved at all with this person's view of manly colours.

Lamahaha · 13/01/2020 19:12

If you don't want a period - go on the pill, get an implant, get a coil. All free on the NHS

??? You still have periods when on the Pill or with a coil. Unless things have drastically changed in the last 30 years or so, when I used birth control...

My daughter does not use any sanpro products at all. She uses nothing but wads of toilet paper, which never ceases to amaze me.
