Well that's disappointing, to say the least.

Oh that's almost funny.

Running on a theme that they know Labour hasn't been understanding the electorate and then going down this path.

That they actually believe they're doing something different to Corbyn when they're just as out of touch as his inner circle was.

It's almost too cringe-inducing to watch.

RoyalCorgi · 06/01/2020 08:28

Oh well that’s her finished then. Do we know if Keir Starmer is gender critical (can’t see it somehow...)

I think Keir Starmer is our best bet out of all of them.

EwwSprouts · 06/01/2020 09:44

Ffs, has she been “stonewalled”?

No. He's was out yesterday sucking the trans proverbial too. As I posted earlier in the thread: I'm sure he thinks allowing women to exit a marriage before its terms become fundamentally different are antithetical to "trans rights" too.

Really refreshing to hear Keir_Starmer in Stevenage today, championing trans rights and committing to protect them if elected. I hope the other candidates can do the same. #LabourLeadership

LuluJakey1 · 06/01/2020 10:11

@Kit19 I agree with you entirely about women's rights and it infuriates me that there is a group of the trans and 'woke' brigade that seem unable to see what they are doing.

However, the whole trans agenda has become such a 'woke' thing, with associated levels of needing to being publicly seen/heard to care by 'wokies' that it has lost any sympathy from most people - who find it ridiculous in content and disgusting in how it ignores women's rights.

LuluJakey1 · 06/01/2020 10:13

I don't want to hear leadership contender's views on trans issues, I want to hear their views on how they will protect and develop the rights of women.

Devereux1 · 06/01/2020 10:21

I've always thought Jess Philip's to be one of the truly thickest people in British politics. Day by day, there is more evidence that this view is entirely correct.

Devereux1 · 06/01/2020 10:22

Philip's Phillips

motorcyclenumptiness · 06/01/2020 10:25

Alienating more than half the electorate seems to be a sure-fire way to render the Labour party unelectable and a spent force. Interesting.

No, that's a misrepresentation of both question and answer.

I am also pleased that Keir has said in the past that he wishes to protect women's rights too, and there is nothing in this video to contradict this, so maybe Keir is intending to bring people together. If so, good on him."

So has Jess, arguably.

Neither has mounted any full-throated defence of women's rights. Neither will do so during this leadership election campaign.

If you think Kier Starmer will do anything concrete to put a brake on the genderist juggernaut, I really can't help you. He won't. Neither will any of the others (with the possible exception of Lisa Nandy, and the best she will manage is the status quo and long grass for any further trans reforms).

I know it's hard to accept. I don't want to accept it either. But it's true. The Labour Party is lost to women for the forseeable. Our only realistic option is to decamp, as the Red Wall did, and wait until they finally (if ever) see the light and make actual, serious, genuine attempts to win us back.

Justhadathought · 06/01/2020 11:17

Well, there you have it.......Jess Phillips was intimately involved in writing the proposals for the GRA amendment on Self ID. That is why she equivocated so much in the select committee meeting.

The current crop of front-line Labour candidates are a lost cause.

Mockers2020Vision · 06/01/2020 11:21

Keir Starmer can read a draft legal clause and understand it. That alone gives hope.

Justhadathought · 06/01/2020 11:21

This is long haul stuff....the trans juggernaut will not be turned round quickly or easily.

The Labour party is not listening. The local constituency parties have been taken over by a mixture of young Corbyn/Momentum people and 'inter-sectionalists', and in many cases old hard-line leftists - who were never really interested in women's rights anyway.

Justhadathought · 06/01/2020 11:24

Keir Starmer can read a draft legal clause and understand it. That alone gives hope

Keir Starmer is not going to win back the old traditional heartlands. He was an ardent remainer for one. And he's too much of a polished courtroom barrister to appeal to many, in spite of his working class credentials. He's been around the front bench and policy making for too long now......and he's gone along with the Self ID thing.

Justhadathought · 06/01/2020 11:27

Can't stand Emily Thornberry. She may be a gutsy and capable performer, but her sneering persona would alienate so many people. And I've heard her go on about Self ID too.......I like Yvette cooper - but she doesn't have much of a chance.

Michelleoftheresistance · 06/01/2020 11:29

I'm willing to run the book on Starmer's 'protecting women's rights' will go with 'protecting single sex spaces' where the definition of woman is anyone who wants to use the word, and single sex spaces means anyone of any sex who wants to be there.

Wholly incompatible with protecting the rights of natal females who until recently were known as women, but on the surface doesn't frighten the horses. It's a gutless admission that they daren't stand behind their own beliefs.

LangCleg · 06/01/2020 11:58

Keir Starmer can read a draft legal clause and understand it. That alone gives hope.

That you even type that says it all really!

LangCleg · 06/01/2020 12:00

Back to transwidows....

Tinsel - if a politician came out and said that they supported removing forced marriage the spousal veto, but only after legislating for speedy no-fault divorce, would you be okay with that?

noodlenosefraggle · 06/01/2020 12:06

Would a no fault divorce have to have the agreement of both parties? If yes, then it has the same problems as the 2 year separation. That one partner can keep the other trapped. I know one of the items in the Queens Speech was no fault divorce.

Childrenofthestones · 06/01/2020 12:30

So Sir Kier Starmer and Lady Nugee are two hopes of winning back the working class vote to Labour?
I can see it being an uphill struggle.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 06/01/2020 12:53

Unless you are unwilling to use the fault divorce mechanism (in which case you have to wait at least two years), divorce itself is a relatively quick process. What slows it down is the financial settlement which generally needs to be reached before the divorce can go through. Either party can slow down divorce hugely by being difficult over finances, either in relation to disclosure or in reaching agreement.

Binterested · 06/01/2020 12:59

Without wishing to get into a working class off, KS is the son of a nurse and a toolmaker. Def not a MC upbringing in SE London.

Mockers2020Vision · 06/01/2020 13:05

Emily Thornberry is Lady Nugee for exactly the same reasons that Kier Starmer's Missus is Lady Starmer.

Shall we start mentioning Harriet Harman's aunt next?
