Are you non binary...

According to Wikipedia?

Non-binary, or genderqueer, is a spectrum of gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or feminine‍—identities that are outside the gender binary.[1] Non-binary identities can fall under the transgender umbrella, since many non-binary people identify with a gender that is different from their assigned sex[2] but does not necessarily, as some intersex people are also non-binary.

Non-binary people may identify as having two or more genders (being bigender or trigender);[4][5] having no gender (agender, nongendered, genderless, genderfree or neutrois); moving between genders or having a fluctuating gender identity (genderfluid);[6] being third gender or other-gendered (a category that includes those who do not place a name to their gender).

Gender identity is separate from sexual or romantic orientation,[8] and non-binary people have a variety of sexual orientations, just as cisgender people do.

A non-binary gender is not associated with a specific gender expression, such as androgyny. Non-binary people as a group have a wide variety of gender expressions, and some may reject gender "identities" altogether.

I really struggle with how so many people, including apparently respectable scientists and skeptics can accept an ideology with such evident logical contradictions. That single Wikipedia entry, that definition, is so inconsistent and nonsensical, I just don’t get it. And why, why, why does it make people so angry that we can’t even discuss it?

Non binary seems to be the synthesis of the lost argument to me, frankly.

If by synthesis you mean epitome I am completely with you!

I suppose, building on Lang's posts above, it's the difference between viewing yourself as a heretic or an atheist?

I was thinking along similar lines, Beyond.

I don't believe in god but I'm not an infidel.
I don't believe in gender identity but I'm not non-binary.
I don't have magical powers but I'm not a muggle.

PencilsInSpace · 29/12/2019 17:33

To be fair, lots of wiki entries are inconsistent and nonsensical because it's crowd-written. I often find the talk tab more enlightening than the main article.

HorseWithNoHumbuggery · 29/12/2019 17:35

Why would they have to define it? Couldn't their definition be whatever they want it to be?

Oh you mean just make stuff up.

I knew it!

TrickyKid · 29/12/2019 17:38

Well apparently I am....but I didn't know it until recently. I won't shout and stamp my feet about though. I'll just carry on like a normal person.

BickerinBrattle · 29/12/2019 17:43

They’re just making it up as they go along.

It reminds me of nothing so much as listening to a toddler tell a story, creating ever more convolutions.

The question is why adults take any of it seriously, when it’s so clearly whipped up out of nothing — it’s meringue, every bit of it.

And yet laws are being changed to codify and therefore regift the meringue.

We’ll see what happens when companies if and when companies like Nike, big supporters of the “woke,” lose the lawsuits filed against them for amounts in excess of $1 million for employee failure to recognise all these ephemeral genders. Woke corporations could get UN woke very quickly.

BickerinBrattle · 29/12/2019 17:45

reify not regift! Sheesh! I only regift things like plates in the shape of cows (no lie — a wedding gift.)

ILoveJoeBrown · 29/12/2019 17:48

I think someone has mentioned already in an earlier post, but to me it's all personality traits and f all to do with gender.

When I was younger I was much more of a tomboy, but it didn't occur to anyone that I might be non-binary or queer. I was just a boyish female.

I'd say I was more feminine now but as I look very much like my Dad, I can look more male if I haven't 'put a face on'.

I'm not and never was confused about my sexuality, even when I remained stubbornly flat-chested and took up running (bra-less as I didn't need one).

Why do we even need to define all these genders, biology is pretty simple - male or female - that's it.

What is wrong with a female being a tomboy, or a male being in touch with his feminine side? We are making life so much more complicated in our desire to be 'nice' to everyone. And by that I don't mean that you shouldn't be nice to everyone - but we have become so obsessed with not offending that we are tying ourselves up in PC knots.

Bearsinmotion · 29/12/2019 17:50

I have just tried a few online quizzes to see. So far I am (or at least my younger self was) definitely genderqueer, a cis Male, have “strong” gender dysphoria and my mental gender is 55:45 Male: Female. So not much improvement on Wikipedia there! Xmas Confused

I suppose if I had to set up a Tumblr profile yes I'd be non-binary.

I'm not of course, I am a woman. I have no gender.

When you are a young child you spend a lot of time thinking questions like "what is my favourite colour" and "favourite food" etc. Are really important and integral to you, I remember not being able to decide on my favourite colour and being very concerned.

I think a lot of people view gender in a similar way. That my favourite colour is red, food is sausages, gender is female etc. It's that almost childlike belief, like you are making a sim of yourself.

That's why there's so many variations, because people panic when they don't fit in the correct box, and instead of thinking "hang on a second" they just make another box.

In an online world you have to be able to define your personality as much as possible through words, because there's very little way to get across who you are when you are communicating online. There's lots of communities of people who live their life online, and to be a person online you have to almost have a written definition of your personality. And I think that's where a lot of this comes from.

Datun · 29/12/2019 18:03

As it's so progressive and a 'new' way of thinking, they'd have to define masculine and feminine first. Without being hopelessly sexist of course.

Never seen it done. Never seen the list of traits. Ever.

LangCleg · 29/12/2019 18:11

If by synthesis you mean epitome I am completely with you!

I meant synthesis - of the list of definitions of gender identity I'd just given, which are selectively applied to suit the argument du jour.

ILoveJoeBrown · 29/12/2019 18:12

BlueCornsihPixie: none of what you just posted makes any sense. If you are a woman, you are female. End of.

ProbablyShouldntbut · 29/12/2019 18:14

Non binary is a very useful term for some people to use. Specifically those people who can't spell 'narcissist' but are intent on everyone knowing how special they are.

BlueCornsihPixie · 29/12/2019 18:33

Ilove

I think you have missunderstood me. I didn't say being a woman didn't make me female? Or I could be female but not a woman.

I was just pondering on why certain groups of people place so much stock on gender, and feel they need to define their gender. It wasn't my own personal view. I think it makes perfect sense tbh

Bearsinmotion · 29/12/2019 20:27

In that case Lang I don’t know what you mean by synthesis! It’s a word I only recognise in a scientific context and even with google definitions I don’t understand it in the context you’re using Blush

Bearsinmotion · 29/12/2019 20:32

I do think this is interesting:

I was just pondering on why certain groups of people place so much stock on gender, and feel they need to define their gender.

I do think that is the main difference between me and the Stonewall style non-binary person - I just have no need to define my gender, I see no reason to do so!

DuMondeB · 29/12/2019 20:37

Nah. I like pink and purple and have a vagina so all is well here.

My favourite colours are green and yellow so I’m off to google to find an ‘Are you non binary’ quiz.

Next stop, elective double mastectomy! Woooo!

SentimentalKiller · 29/12/2019 20:45

The labelling I find ridiculous and I try to reject gender norms imposed on me by society
However, my work place seems to be embracing the madness. If it takes hold I am going to identify as non binary or other gender and use Ze/Zay. I think it is the only way to protect myself from potential accusations of trabsphobia. Plus I want to seriously take the piss out of it all

NotTerfNorCis · 29/12/2019 20:53

Wait so women who don't live up to feminine stereotypes aren't female, they're 'non-binary'.

So progressive. Hmm

Voice0fReason · 29/12/2019 21:05

In order for them to convince me of the existence of gender identity then they need to define exactly what fits into the gender identity of woman and man. I don't think they ever will.

ooooohbetty · 29/12/2019 21:37

@probablyshouldntbut
Spot on!

JanesKettle · 29/12/2019 21:52

Nah.

I'm a genderless human in a female body. I've undergone female socialization and female-only experience as a result of that body. But internally ? Just human. No gender.

JanesKettle · 29/12/2019 21:54

Wait so women who don't live up to feminine stereotypes aren't female, they're 'non-binary'

So dumb. So in winter, when I don't shave my legs or underarms, I'm male, but in summer when I do, I'm female, and this makes me non-binary?

I am so tired of the DUMBNESS of gender shit. Like, it's really stupid.

JanesKettle · 29/12/2019 21:56

I'm gonna be a conscientious objector if it ever comes to my workplace. No protection, of course, but that's my identity.
