Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Hair colour apparently means you’re trans now and also TRAs are not MRAs

I’ve lurked for quite a while and seen some of you refer to feminists supporting trans people as ‘the blue hair brigade’. What’s the reason for an attack on a person’s appearance? Surely that’s the opposite of feminism? Reminds me of the whole ‘I’m not like other girls because I’m smart and I read and I don’t wear makeup’. And what does blue hair have to do with trans people?! It’s more punk than anything!
I also saw someone compare trans activists to men’s rights activists. Wtf? They’re not the same, come on you know.
It’s probably obvious we don’t share the same views but at least be civil.

It’s just shorthand. Nobody on mn thinks that blue hair makes you trans.

Re MRAs, the similarities between the two are pretty obvious. In particular the idea that lesbians must sleep with penis having trans women despite not being attracted to them because they’re bigots if they don’t. I don’t see how that is any different to unattractive men arguing that they have a right to have sex with women even if there are no women who actually want to sleep with them.

LangCleg · 20/12/2019 09:43

Boring plop. Regardless of hair colour.

ChattyLion · 20/12/2019 09:44

I think a lot of people have a lot bigger fish to fry than this at the moment: but if being civil is the goal then the death and rape threats to women on twitter are probably a more important place to begin than MN.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 20/12/2019 10:02

I, too, had blue hair in the late 90s. And blue ears, blue neck, blue hairline. What was that stuff - Directions? It got everywhere.

FloralBunting · 20/12/2019 10:11

I'm sure we're all really examining our consciences for the occasional flippant joke about blue hair because people who are fully signed up to Queer theory and an ideology which thinks that saying 'sex is real' is a statement in support of genocide, think it's unhelpful.

I have blue hair and am quite comfortable that I'm better than mindless drones screaming bigot at women they disagree with. I don't tend to use specific collective pejoratives very much, not inclined to use 'handmaiden' for example, but I'm not going to police other women for a bit of mild humour about a group which regularly threatens us with economic sanction or baseball bats.

LangCleg · 20/12/2019 10:40

Personally I dislike the “blue haired wokester” thing. I think we should be better than that, and not lower ourselves to their level.

I don't feel in the least bit obligated to be polite, nice, or rise above. And I live for taking the piss. Sadly - or rather not sadly at bloody all - I failed female socialisation.

DuMondeB · 20/12/2019 10:46

Plus, unlike ‘handmaiden’ or ‘pearl clutchers’, ‘blue hairs’ is a gender neutral insult!

I'm old.

I only find unnaturally bright coloured hair acceptable if the hair in question is styled into a Mohican which must be held in place with Insette hairspray Grin

Needmoresleep · 20/12/2019 12:25

"beard and sandals" used to be a way of insulting a certain type of man. Gender neutral now!

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 20/12/2019 12:58

Yawn.

In my day, there was talk of the way particularly spectacular Mohicans were kept in place by PVA glue.

Coyoacan · 20/12/2019 13:24

I do not think that TRAs represent the majority of transpeople. TRAs are a law unto themselves. But they are definitely MRAs when their favourite term of abuse is "Suck my dick" or "Suck my lady dick"

Are you also offended by the remarks about men with beards?

WhereYouLeftIt · 20/12/2019 13:48

Sorry to drop and dash, have only read the OP. I think this GIF sums up why I perceive many who would describe themselves as TRAs, as actually being MRAs.

popehilarious · 20/12/2019 14:02

I used to wear a blue wig, so what does that make me if I was 'living as someone with blue hair'? trans-trans?

doritosdip · 20/12/2019 14:13

I think that you're the one who needs to "come on" if you can't see the similarities between MRAs and TRAs.

Off the top of my head they both

  • resort to rape threats if their views are challenged politely
  • they both think that women need to change their behaviour and that men are fine to continue as they are. Why is the solution to transwomen not feeling safe in the men's changing room for women to tolerate their penises in the womens? Why don't they tell men what they can do to make things more comfortable for Transwomen or campaign for a third space? Why aren't gay men told that they are bigots if they don't sleep with transmen?
  • There is an insistence that people should accept their views without question. They are free to think that gender trumps biology but I am free to think the opposite. I agree that kids benefit if their good Dads are involved in their lives but the Dads need to consider adjusting their lives like Mums do and go part-time/ask for flexi-time to accommodate the kids.
PurpleHoodie · 20/12/2019 14:17

TRAs are MRAs who Sparkle Hard.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 20/12/2019 15:35

In my day, there was talk of the way particularly spectacular Mohicans were kept in place by PVA glue.

I was not aware of this, though suspect it may have been more effective than an entire can of Insette.

I shall add it to my list of 'uses of PVA glue' which I recently discovered is used by professional plasterers, just a small amount, to aid adhesion.

HorseWithNoBlueHairs · 20/12/2019 15:48

I wonder..

D'ya think that maybe the OP (original plopper) has blue hair him or herself?

Thelnebriati · 20/12/2019 15:58

@ACatWhoBinds
If you think women shouldn't have to wear a hijab or cover their legs, what are you doing to challenge BAME men about your inclusive beliefs?

Findumdum1 · 20/12/2019 15:59

I've noticed an uptick in blue lips in the twittersphere too. Hard look to pull off.

FloralBunting · 20/12/2019 16:02

I draw the line at blue lips. I happily have peacock toned hair, but blue lips make you look like a corpse, which isn't a good look on a corpse, never mind a living human.

ThePurported · 20/12/2019 16:18

For me the blue hair thing is shorthand for a certain type of 'intersectional feminist' (apologies to Floral and great to see you back!), brilliantly parodied by Jane Clare Jones in the Annals of Terf Wars
janeclarejones.com/2018/11/13/the-annals-of-the-terf-wars/

Episode 1: The First War Continues. Scene 2: Cyberspace – around 2013-14

Enter Intersectional Feminists from top, bottom and side of screen….

Intersectional feminists: THEY WILL NOT DEBATE THEIR RIGHT TO EXIST YOU FUCKING BIGOTS.

Feminists: Hang on, we thought you were feminists. We thought you cared about female people.

Intersectional feminists: Female people are so last century. Only White Feminists care about female people.

Feminists: White what?

Intersectional feminists: All the feminists before us were white middle-class women and they only cared about what white middle-class women care about and they were only interested in getting good jobs for white middle-class women and they didn’t care about Black women and were dried up whorephobic prudes who didn’t realize sex work was liberating and mostly they just wanted to kill trans people.

Feminists: That sounds like some mad-ass caricature.

Intersectional feminists: You would say that, you oppressive old crones. You’re just saying that to maintain your power.

Feminists: No we’re not, we don’t have much power. We’re saying it because it sounds like bullshit. Starts trying to explain all the things second wave feminism did to help women

Intersectional feminists: We’re not listening to you, you oppressive bitches. We’ve hidden all your books in the library to protect young minds from them. You are whorephobes and transphobes and racists. We are intersectional. Only we have learned from the Tumblr-oracle how all the different oppressions have different points on a scale that add up to who is the most oppressed and you are white (so are we mostly but we’re pointing at you because somehow that means something, maybe because we have asymmetric hair-cuts and our profile pics give great side-eye) and you are women and that means that you are the least oppressed and that means that your feminism is shit and that means that you have to centre all these other people in your feminism and if you refuse it’s because you’re the oppressors and the most oppressed people are trans women and they must be the centre of feminism from now on.

Feminists: You want us to centre male born people in our feminism?

Intersectional feminists: THAT’S RIGHT BITCHES. And there is no such thing as ‘male-born people.’ That is cissexism and is literal violence. You need to educate yourselves. We don’t have the spoons.

Feminists: Um yeah, we know quite a lot about the history and practice of feminism and we’ve thought quite hard about it and I think we’re going to carry on centring female people if you don’t mind.

Intersectional feminists: OPPRESSORS

Feminists: Female people are oppressed and our political movement…

Intersectional feminists: SWERF AND TERF. SWERF AND TERF. SWERF AND TERF.

(Ps – Would you like to try this sourdough bread I made with yeast from my vagina?)

Feminists: Okay. This is getting REALLY fucked up now.

Intersectional feminists: Run away and cry your ‘White Feminism TM’ tears you dried up old witches. And don’t fucking kink-shame us or we’ll shank you.

Feminists: Um, this feminism seems not very…

Intersectional feminists with new blue hair: BIG DICK ENERGY.

TERF-blocker descends
