I'm not saying it is true - Twitter isn't known for being wedded to truth...anyone able to shed light? I thought the verdict wasn't due for a while...

I saw the other day that Elizabeth Warren has her pronouns in her Twitter bio. I knew immediately that Trump was going to win again.

But Trump "can't possibly win" because of all the stuff he's done. He's been impeached.

I find it amazing what hill the Democrats choose to die on and sacrifice the rights of those they claim to stand for in the process.

I will be surprised if he loses.

Mominatrix · 20/12/2019 08:27

This case was reported in the New York Times yesterday. Very poor coverage, yet presents the bias which exists in the US media where being Gender Critical is seen as tantamount to bigotry.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 20/12/2019 08:49

The lawmakers in the US understand perfectly well what women are. That's why there's no reproductive care for millions of them over there.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 20/12/2019 09:45

I agree - I suspect Trump will win again. And the impeachment will be presented as a democratic plot to oust it which will galvanise his supporters more.

Imnobody4 · 20/12/2019 10:36

What's wrong with women on the left. They've become as out of touch as Marie Antoinette. It will not end well.

TruthOnTrial · 20/12/2019 10:49

Trump already declared that the impeachment is only a plot against him.

The tras need to direct their aggression at science and biology as they have such as issue with it, not women.

Its hilarious to be so hurty as to call biological truth hate speech.

Whats scarey is anyone being so up themselves they can't see how false that is, how untrue, and how dangerous. Why oh why are lords still in existence giving them a platform for being up themselves like this.

Otoh, everyone should have a voice, but not use it to shut down others voices Confused

BarbaraStrozzi · 20/12/2019 10:52

I presume, Red (knowing how incredibly well informed you are about US politics) that this is a parody of the Democrat policy wonk line of argument rather than your own view.

Because the Democrats haven't got a hope in hell of the necessary 2/3 majority in Congress.

BarbaraStrozzi · 20/12/2019 10:54

Should add my own personal view is yes I think Trump is unfit to be president, but no, I don't believe my view will be shared by the majority in Congress.

TruthOnTrial · 20/12/2019 11:00

how much men hate women

It seems some men just feel extremely threatened by women, and rather than freudian penis envy its perhaps closer to the truth that theres massively covert cunt envy (now oppressively so)

severnboring · 20/12/2019 11:13

Been thinking about the judge's 'pre-crime' logic...
So, I think that hijab and religious modesty in general is bad for women and rooted in misogyny.
I have lots of colleagues who wear hijab, we have warm and friendly professional relations and everyone gets on with their job.
By the judge's logic, the thoughts in my head represent a risk that I will harrass my colleagues, and therefore it would be fine if I was sacked for thinking them.
The judge in the Fair Cop JR was very thorough in examining this 'pre-crime' logic when the police claimed that 'checking Harry's thinking' was done in order to prevent escalation to future harrassent or crime - judge was NOT keen. It's going to be interesting to see what his ruling says about this!

TruthOnTrial · 20/12/2019 11:29

For some those thoughts and mindset are the prelude to action, criminal or not.

I disagree with hijab for the same reasons, but I don't have issue with other cultures unless they are anti. Like I don't have issues with people wanting to be the opposite sex. I take issue with those riding on the back of this group to remove women's rights. There are very differing mindsets here, those that want to quietly get on with their lives without fear or harassment, and those that viciously attack women and their rights.

Women shut down for what?
TRAs renaming women, name-calling, threatening, intimidating, abusing, stealing established rights, and clouding stats so as to falsify them.

Wheres the bigotry coming from.

Smoke and mirrors.

severnboring · 20/12/2019 11:35

Well yes, everyone's thoughts are the prelude to their actions.

The point is, at which point does a switch flick where police, the judiciary and employers act?

PencilsInSpace · 20/12/2019 11:44

That NYT article:

Mr. Rowling criticized that outcome and said she supported Ms. Forstater, who did not respond to a message seeking comment on Thursday.

Oh no! They misgendered Rowling!! Shock

RedToothBrush · 20/12/2019 11:46

Yes parody.

Wish I didn't.

AutumnRose1 · 20/12/2019 11:51

"The point is, at which point does a switch flick where police, the judiciary and employers act?"

exactly.

GrinitchSpinach · 20/12/2019 11:59

Warren’s lgbtq plan also promises to impose fines on women’s shelters that do not accept male people. As women’s shelters tend to be so well-funded—NOT—this is effectively a threat intended to force them to let TW sleep and shower alongside women, or else close their doors.

I cannot express the depths of my disappointment in Warren.

I do wish one of the minor candidates, someone with nothing to lose, would pick this fight and bust this issue into the national stage. Yang, for example, is perfectly positioned to stand up for women. He is not a politician and therefore not captive to the captured institutions on the left.

I have little hope, however, that any candidate will stand up for women, or even concede that there are any competing rights at play that deserve civilized discussion.

The national Democratic party’s arrogance and top-down attitude is not limited to the gender identity issue. (And I say this as a lifelong Democrat and many-time volunteer). I am trying to keep standing up for my values but there is so little hope here it can feel tempting to say “fuck politics” and just retreat into one’s personal life.

This is my very long winded way of saying I think that most Democratic candidates would give a Jo Swinson-style answer to “what is a woman?” and that I think Trump will win in 2020. Tooooo depressing.

DetroitDReindeer · 20/12/2019 12:04

Shelters in the west coast states already are subject to funding withdrawal if they don't take trans women. I was told it was a federal policy, so presume it's country wide. It's a fallacy that trump will protect shelters. It is not happening.

BarbaraStrozzi · 20/12/2019 12:14

Detroit Flowers

(For those who don't know Detroit from her other threads, she's currently camping in the middle of an American winter because she can't find a women- only shelter. This is what the consequences of "no debate", now apparently enshrined in UK employment law, play out in the real world outside the twitter bubble, for those who are genuinely among the most vulnerable rather than suffering hurty feels because of wrong pronouns).

WeGoHigher · 20/12/2019 12:18

I've just read this about a street harasser. The man won on appeal. (Bear with me on this, it's relevant.)

www.theguardian.com/world/2019/dec/20/rotterdam-street-harassment-catcall-court-appeal

Here's an interesting bit from the article:

The court found that such interference in the right to freedom of expression under article 10 of the European convention of human rights had not been justified

Men cannot in theory have more rights than women (see for example: Equality Act 2010) but yet that is how it appears to be playing out across the board, from tribunals to appeal courts, from England to the Netherlands.

Harry Miller could still win, of course.

DetroitDReindeer · 20/12/2019 12:25

Im really not complaining. I hate to sound like im whining. At this point I'm on a bit of a light shedding crusade. The shelters have fallen. I can't even call the national helpline as they got very upset with me for asking for shelter that didn't accept adult male bodied people. Hostile

Many shelters now take men who identity as men now, citing they suffer too.

Shelters in the us already must take trans women or else lose funding.

Im resolutely non political. None of the assholes would do a positive thing for me personally. Ive only got the energy to drop out. Ive no political agenda here.

If a shelter doesn't currently have trans or adult male workers, volunteers or residents, but accept them, they are making it abundantly clear to me that they will not be able to help, and are totally untrustworthy.

LangCleg · 20/12/2019 12:35

Warren’s lgbtq plan also promises to impose fines on women’s shelters that do not accept male people. As women’s shelters tend to be so well-funded—NOT—this is effectively a threat intended to force them to let TW sleep and shower alongside women, or else close their doors.

Fines? FINES? JFC.

DetroitDReindeer · 20/12/2019 12:49

They already lose funding, but to fine them too is really doubling down on the ideology. The net result is unaltered. There's no guaranteed man free shelter now, and there sure as heck won't be if this woman gets her way. Of course Ms Warren and her family will never be in need of shelter. Too rich.

GrinitchSpinach · 20/12/2019 13:03

It's a fallacy that trump will protect shelters.
I didn't make that claim? Maybe you are not addressing me here, though; not sure.

My point is was that American women have no party; no candidate. And it's the most vulnerable womenlike youwho are paying the worst price for it. Flowers

As for current federal policy I hope someone with more expertise than I can weigh in ( Bicker? ) but my understanding is that there is a ton of confusion right now and it hasn't been well tested in the courts yet. The Obama administration (with Julian Castro as HUD secretary, incidentally) implemented a TWAW policy, but current HUD secretary Ben Carson made remarks in that garnered some attention in September:

“During a recent meeting with local staff in San Francisco, I made reference to the fact that I had heard from many women’s groups about the difficulty they were having with women’s shelters because sometimes men would claim to be women,” Carson wrote.

“This made many of the women feel unsafe, and one of the groups described a situation to me in which ‘big hairy men’ would come in and have to be accepted into the women’s shelter even though it made the women in the facility very uncomfortable,” he added.

“My point was that we have to permit policies that take into consideration the rights of everybody, including those women,” Carson wrote.

“Our society is in danger when we pick one issue (such as gender identity) and say it does not matter how it impacts others because this one issue should override every other common-sense consideration,” Carson wrote Friday, adding, “we must always be vigilant not to override the common sense of our fellow Americans.”

So who knows what the Trump admin will do. But I can say for sure that Warren's plan has lost her my vote and $$$ in the primary. I will vote for any candidate over Trump in the general.

AutumnRose1 · 20/12/2019 13:05

Detroit "I can't even call the national helpline as they got very upset with me for asking for shelter that didn't accept adult male bodied people. Hostile"

is this the sort of thing the newspapers won't report?
