I'm not saying it is true - Twitter isn't known for being wedded to truth...anyone able to shed light? I thought the verdict wasn't due for a while...

Come on Douglas Murray. Do your brilliant stuff.

ThePurported · 19/12/2019 10:34

The papers aren't communicating the issue effectively atm. Hopefully the Times will cover it properly.
Gregor Murray's photo says more than a thousand words.

AutumnRose1 · 19/12/2019 10:35

Purported I've actually seen old news on a few paper sites this morning.

whether or not it's just "holding" space for after the Queen's speech, I don't know. But tbh I think most papers won't want to report it.

Datun · 19/12/2019 10:38

I think it may come to this: a mass of women identifying out of oppression and into privilege by saying the magic words.

Making men in public, in court, on official documentation refer to their wives as husbands and girlfriends as boyfriends? That sort of thing?

StealthPolarBear · 19/12/2019 10:39

Presumably there will be a knock on effect on birth registrations. How can they know what a newborn's sex is?

StealthPolarBear · 19/12/2019 10:40

Maybe it could be the parents' stated belief before the child has a chance to state their own.

Ereshkigal · 19/12/2019 10:41

It's occurred to me this morning, to wonder whether trans widows could be sacked for refusing to believe our husbands / ex husbands are women, and the implications of this for coercive control.

Yes, absolutely.

SugarPlumFairyCakes · 19/12/2019 10:43

Don't even need to wait for self ID do we? After all, we can't be challenged by anyone asking to see a GRC...... Because that is a complete denial of out existence.

ThePurported · 19/12/2019 10:45

Datun The problem is that when women do something like that, it's just 'feminism gone mad' and no one wants to find out why women are protesting.
When men do it, it becomes a matter of human dignity.

The lack of intellectual curiosity around this issue is depressing.

Datun · 19/12/2019 10:48

ThePurported

Oh yes, I agree. Women have to go above and behind to make a barely perceptible dent.

TheABC · 19/12/2019 10:54

This judgement would be picked apart and skewered in a basic philosophy class, let alone a court of appeal.

Right now, I am furious. However, if there is an appeal I will contribute and hope the sunlight will have a salutary effect.

RoyalCorgi · 19/12/2019 11:14

I think it may have been a better tactic to argue it based on fact.

Strange as it seems, I don't think that was an option, legally.

Cailleachian · 19/12/2019 11:16

"It's occurred to me this morning, to wonder whether trans widows could be sacked for refusing to believe our husbands / ex husbands are women, and the implications of this for coercive control."

I dont understand why trans women who have pretended to be men for the purposes of marriage are not being charged with rape if the marriage was consumated.

There are several cases of gender fraud where people who were assigned female at birth have gone to prison for rape/sexual assault for pretending that they were men, why are people who were male assigned at birth exempt from this?

TinselAngel · 19/12/2019 11:52

I dont understand why trans women who have pretended to be men for the purposes of marriage are not being charged with rape if the marriage was consumated.

They haven't pretended to be men though. They are men legally at the time of the marriage, even if they subsequently get a GRC.

I'll not talk about biologically because I don't want to be deleted.

Also my ex didn't rape me. I loved the man I married and had a child with him. My child was absolutely not conceived through rape.

Really hoping Spiked will go to town on this. As well as Janice Turner and James Kirkup.

RealityNotEssentialism · 19/12/2019 12:17

Yeah I agree that fact was not an argument that would have won here. The argument Maya made was that, regardless of the fact that her words insulted trans people, she should be permitted to say them because they formed part of a belief she held. I don’t think truth/fact is something that the law recognises as a defence to another person’s claim of discrimination.

NotTerfNorCis · 19/12/2019 12:24

So pleased to see #IStandWithMaya trending on Twitter.

BiologyIsReal · 19/12/2019 12:30

Apologies if this has already been posted. Only just fired up the computer!

NotTerf I’m not sure it is trending

If I change my trends so they’re non personalised, then it isn’t there.

TruthOnTrial · 19/12/2019 12:49

I think this leaves wide open a case for us as women, en masse, to take a case to court for the establishment of 'woman'.

We can debate how we each 'woman', and how harmful gender stereotypes are to our lives, relationships and careers.

Agreeing with you notbad

TruthOnTrial · 19/12/2019 12:54

How many women could we squeeze into court, women, for women to make the case for women.

NotTerfNorCis · 19/12/2019 12:55

I think it is, Autumn. I can see it with both Twitter accounts, one of which steers totally clear of GC stuff. It does come lower down the list for that account though.
