He's doing stand up and started on transgender issues when there is a sudden voiceover to say that this bit went down so badly with the audience that they've had to cut it.

Not sure what to make of this - he seems to be taking the piss out of the woke. It's available online.

What programme?

Swirlygirl · 17/12/2019 19:00

I’m interestedto know how many it didn’t go down well with.

Christ - I’ve seen comedians mock disabled kids and it was still aired but god forbid you talk about the trans issue and your wiped off ..

Defenestratethecat · 17/12/2019 19:01

Yep, heard it and was a bit Hmm

Defenestratethecat · 17/12/2019 19:02

Rooms, the programme is ‘Rhys James Isn’t’, Radio 4 at 6.30pm.

Defenestratethecat · 17/12/2019 19:03

Sorry, Roomba

ARoombaOfOnesOwn · 17/12/2019 19:05

Thanks Defenestrate.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 17/12/2019 19:05

He did a show last week that was taking the nick out of gender critical. I think the idea is that he adopts different positions each week or something, so this week is the opposite of last weeks. Might look it up.

vaginafetishist · 17/12/2019 19:09

I heard it, I wasn't surprised but it was chilling.

vaginafetishist · 17/12/2019 19:11

They all knew he was adopting the persona of a right wing comedian and still jokes about prisons and sport went down so badly they couldn't air it.

TraffordReSister · 17/12/2019 19:12

Last week he presented the "Left Wing" view that "TWAW" 'gender neutral toilets are brilliant' etc. This week he's presenting the opposing arguments of people who "have the Daily Telegraph injected into their veins" or some such rubbish. I couldn't listen after the first five minutes. I object to the idea that not believing in trans ideology represents a right-wing conservative view. He remarked at the beginning that it probably wouldn't go down well with his left-wing "London" audience.

testing987654321 · 17/12/2019 19:13

Oh I heard him being interviewed about the series. He picks a topic and jokes about it from a left wing perspective one week and a right wing one the next.

He said the right wing jokes were really easy to write as no-one normally does them, but did go down really badly in general. He regarded it as a win if he could get a left-wing crowd to laugh at a right-wing joke despite themselves.

I will definitely listen to it.

pombear · 17/12/2019 19:14

Just caught this in comedy 6.30 slot and was starting a thread myself.

Overview of programme:

In an attempt to become more politically engaged, comedian Rhys James tries on opinions like clothes to see how they fit. This week he’s putting his right leg in first.

Last week he was a wishy-washy liberal. Now a week older and more right wing

Included subjects are gender-neutral toilets worth it… (slightly disappointed that single-sex spaces are included as a more 'right-wing' issue'? Seriously? Women on the left aren't able to object to the destruction of single-sex spaces? It's a right-wing issue?)

Anyway, cue humour about gender neutral toilets and men's pissing behaviour. Funny joke about 0.6% trans vs 7% claustrophobes.

Then he starts talking about sports and prisons and the set is interrupted.
Rhys James during set: The thing is, the trans issue, it presents real issues about what it's going to mean about sports or what's going to happen about prisons because the dynamic of those things...

Rhys James voiceover:
Hi, it's me, Rhys James from the radio show you're currently listenng to. So what happened here is I tried to enter a discussion about trans people in prisons and in sport and it went so badly that we had to cut it from the entire show. I was performing to a left wing crowd, they didn't agree, they became quite angry...

I'm so fucking tired of this. If this actually happened, it demonstrates yet again that this particular issue is seen as 'untouchable' like no other issue.

Audience happy to hear all other uncomfortable opinions. Apart from this one. Everyone's been groomed beyond belief. So-called left-wing audience shut down a discussion that touches on the experience of vulnerable women in prison? WTF?

Redshoeblueshoe · 17/12/2019 19:14

Paleblue I caught about a minute of that last week and I turned it off.
It's official I'm turning into my mother

pombear · 17/12/2019 19:17

Just re-reading that again.

It's become seen as a 'right-wing' issue to protect women's sex-specific services, spaces, and rights.

And a 'left-wing' audience are so incensed by touching on that subject, particularly on the subject of prisoners, women, that the programme is interrupted.

This is, indeed, an upside-down world.

TraffordReSister · 17/12/2019 19:21

It's become seen as a 'right-wing' issue to protect women's sex-specific services, spaces, and rights.

This is definitely how Rhys James decided to present the issue on his programme on the BBC tonight.

Swirlygirl · 17/12/2019 19:26

Where can I watch this?

TraffordReSister · 17/12/2019 19:39

Swirlygirl it's called "Rhys James Isn’t’ on BBC Radio 4 at 6.30pm.

I'm struck by the fact that the audience became "angry". There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the only people living in genuine fear are gender critical women who openly discuss their views.

FTFOTFVille · 17/12/2019 19:39

Ok, I admit I am a paranoid so-and-so. But who else thinks some special BBC employees knew it was going to be about one side of the argument about women/sport/prisons, and stacked the audience with TRAs?

Redshoeblueshoe · 17/12/2019 19:49

Well the bit I heard was last week's slagging of GC women. And the audience thought it was fucking hilarious.

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 17/12/2019 20:19

Ok, making more sense now.

Seems against the point of the entire show to not play the prison and sport jokes if they played the gender critical jokes last week.

Just checked twitter, rhys saying that section didn't actually exist.

OP posts:
HermioneWeasley · 17/12/2019 20:29

I heard this and couldn’t believe what happened. Everything is fair game except the perfectly legit discussion of women’s safety and fairness in sports.

TheCraneWife · 17/12/2019 20:58

I'm listening to it now. His routine up to that point was quite astonishingly not funny. I doubt the previous week's "left wing" version was any better.

So was Rhys trying to highlight 'no debate' in his own way, do you think, OP?
