He's doing stand up and started on transgender issues when there is a sudden voiceover to say that this bit went down so badly with the audience that they've had to cut it.

Not sure what to make of this - he seems to be taking the piss out of the woke. It's available online.

Tbh I think he probably isn’t good enough to write that material and certainly not bold enough to try it out but even if he did the producers likely wouldn’t broadcast it.

NeurotrashWarrior · 17/12/2019 21:12

So was Rhys trying to highlight 'no debate' in his own way, do you think, OP?

I saw a fb friend post about this and the impression she gave was that this part was part of the act, and so yes highlighting or taking the piss out of ultra left wing whole lot/ no debate.

vaginafetishist · 17/12/2019 21:12

That doesn't make sense. So he pretended they all got angry...sureHmm

vaginafetishist · 17/12/2019 21:16

Mind you, that does explain why they were laughing so heartily in the remainder.

Beamur · 17/12/2019 21:23

The joke being he expected that a left wing audience would be intolerant of jokes about transpeople in sport/prison...
That is illuminating in its own way.

ARoombaOfOnesOwn · 17/12/2019 21:54

I was thinking it was more like “you can’t joke about such oppressed people so they were understandably angry” - I think I completely missed the point! That’ll teach me not to multitask Blush

Yes I think so. And tbh he had it spot on.

It’s completely ok to take the piss out of GC women but you will get taken off the air if you reverse it. If he mentioned sports and prisons it’s a nod to you can not even speak of it.

Or have I got this wrong?

nauticant · 17/12/2019 22:03

I heard last week's which was about how those right wing people including feminists were stupid. Audience lapped it up.

After grinding my teeth I said to myself "don't judge till you hear next week's".

I'm yet to listen but it sounds like everything is confusion, everything went on, but, no, nothing went on. All's well.

Is this some kind of disinformation exercise? I'll listen tomorrow but, honestly, if one side is "all is clear, aren't the other side stupid", while the other is full of tricks to leave the audience thoroughly baffled then I'll be very pissed off. But unsurprised.

Slow clap for the BBC for looking like a propaganda machine when Boris Johnson is looking to severely limit your activities.

Gone2far · 17/12/2019 22:15

I listened and coudn't understand it all, thanks for explaining. Still wasn't funny at all though. Typical BBC r4 'comedy'

I have just been listening to last week's. It was dire- I must have given up before he got to that point. Desperately unfunny.

Gender stuff starts about 15 minutes in.

TheCraneWife · 17/12/2019 23:44

I fast forwarded to that point. He really isn't funny. Quite a lot of Radio 4 comedy isn't funny.

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 18/12/2019 06:24

I'd like to think that it was to highlight no debate or how left wing audiences are intolerant (the joke about women gets past, of course). But it could also be taking the piss out of 'right wing' people claiming left wing can't take a joke.

It's also relatively subtle if he gets to say what he likes about gender critical and then a week later there's a censorship point. I'd find it more amusing if it wasn't just more of the same - women are stupid, shush on the sensible points. I'm not sure people are aware enough yet for the prisons and sport opener to be strong enough for this to work.

Jim davidson lite joke this week:

Women don't have to do their hair and make up anymore. And you can't tell them they're beautiful - because they're not.

OTOH it made it possible for him to not do the trans jokes thus keeping on the right side of the tra.

Well exactly. If it was supposed to be some kind of subtle #nodebate message then I'm afraid it completely passed me by. And anyone listening in ignorance of the possibility of GRA reform would have missed it too I imagine.

FTFOTFVille · 18/12/2019 08:25

Echoes of Titania McGrath, perhaps, although he possibly wasn't clever enough to know it. When you can't tell what is a joke, and what is real...

WombOfOnesOwn · 18/12/2019 17:53

Were there any good jokes last week about "our side"?

I'm perfectly happy laughing at a good joke at the expense of GC, if it's actually a good joke! Anyone have any to share?

Antibles · 18/12/2019 18:14

I thought it was funny. I assumed the voice over bit was fake, taking the mickey out of progressive lefties not being able to handle trans being made the subject of jokes.

OneEpisode · 19/12/2019 05:39

I thought both “left wing” and “right wing” were funny and both highlighted the issues. The “left wing” jokes especially made the TRA position seem absurd...

ValancyRedfern · 19/12/2019 07:09

From Twitter it looks like it was deliberate. I think he takes a Rickey Gervaise view on it.
