Helen Lewis Twitter abuse - what happened?

ARoombaOfOnesOwn · 16/12/2019 13:04

I’ve only seen this today after some of the tweets have been deleted - did anyone see what happened? A male journo seemed to be going after her. Also she had sent Prick News an email criticising an article - not adhering to suicide reporting guidelines as well as misreporting. She is very balanced on the trans issue - I think it just shows their intolerance if they cannot tolerate even balanced articles and opinions.

Tweet about email sent here:

They are cowards.
Emboldened by the rise of misogyny on social media and the fact that abusing women is now a sport for such little men. It's open season because there are no consequences for attacking women, no hate crime.

They don't dare do this to men, if you notice.

I have teenage boys and I'd be horrified if they behaved like these middle aged men do.

BovaryX · 17/12/2019 06:25

Good to see some names weighing in. A Tory MP and Sky’s Kate McCann

Siamesy
I didn’t see this, but it sounds horrendous. I don’t understand how this level of misogynistic bullying is deemed okay, but Harry Miller is visited by the police? Which Conservative MP intervened? I am very worried that the trans lobbying has already started and the Conservatives need to hear why so many women are unhappy about the bullying tactics and misogynistic agenda of this lobby. Maybe this MP can be an ally for GC voices?

zanahoria · 17/12/2019 07:10

"It's pure misogyny. They can't see it"

The agressive tweets followed by 'hun' and 'babe' are a dead giveaway.

Men like these support the translobby as it promotes a version of womanhood they are more comfortable with - conforming to a stereotype. The idea of an adult human female being anything she damn wants to be is anathema to them.

ChattyLion · 17/12/2019 07:38

So she was rounded on for asking questions related to women and children’s rights and for asking journalists to provide more evidenced writing in their articles?
Right OK then.
Sounds like she was doing her job.
The rest of that little pack of authoritarian misogynists seem to think that journalism is for the issue of dogmatic tracts for us all to obey. Something’s got very confused here.

(My spellchecker just came up with ‘dongmatic’ tracts, which on hindsight probably works better here..) Grin

I think that’s it. The regressive sex stereotypes, the focus on the superficial manifestations of femininity which becomes almost parodic. The vitriolic misogynistic abuse directed at any women who object. It’s all very bloody grim

Update: Wings Over Scotland, a really good blue tick account with a large following, which campaigns for an independent Scotland but has tweeted just as much in support of gender critical positions this year, has been permanently suspended for saying 'you sound like a c*' to Nick Duffy, the Pink News journalist who lied about Helen Lewis in an attempt to bully her.

Cohen's tweet of 'she's vile' is fine, but not Wings Over Scotland, even though swearing is not banned on the platform.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 17/12/2019 08:38

The Scold's Bridle is alive and kicking on social media.

Datun · 17/12/2019 08:48

Has any feminist other than Meghan Murphy sued twitter? What's it called if they all get together? Class action?

merrymouse · 17/12/2019 08:59

This is the article he felt deserved a tirade of abuse:

www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2019/12/britain-election-jeremy-corbyn-labour/603553/

This was the extract he didn't like:

"He also pledged to allow adults to self-identify their gender, and suggested that the law might legally recognize nonbinary people. Such policies are extremely popular among left-wing accounts on British political Twitter, but perhaps less interesting to swing voters in places such as Redcar, where the steelworks recently shut down under the Tory government, and where voters nevertheless switched from Labour to the Conservatives."

The point she is making is that there is a mismatch between the concerns of voters and the concerns of Corbyn's twitter followers. I think other journalists made the same point, but Helen Lewis is a female journalist who writes about women's rights, and women must know their place.

I pre-ordered a copy of Helen's book.

Thanks for the link merry I have just pre ordered it too
The bullying of women on social media, in plain sight is just horrendous

Justhadathought · 17/12/2019 09:25

Twitter is an open sewer.......what few supposed positives it offers are considerably outweighed by the sheer negativity of it all.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/12/2019 09:38

Benjamin Cohen's husband Dr Anthony James is or was a trustee of Mermaids, I believe.

I saw quite a lot of the row on Twitter before he retracted. Unbelievably stupid thing for him to do as well as misogynistic and outright nasty. Judging by his CV, he can't be much more than mid-20s and now his name is largely known to influential people in his profession for being a misogynist who attacked a very well-liked and high-achieving woman and made totally unfounded slurs on her reputation and standing with her colleagues. Not much of an advertisement for his journalistic credentials.

LangCleg · 17/12/2019 09:44

Everyone outside of the Twitter Wokerati is talking about the mismatch between the concerns of voters and the concerns of the Twitter Wokerati. Presumably, they've blocked so many accounts they don't see any of it except for lurking even marginally GC Witch accounts like Helen's in non-logged in windows for denunciation purposes!

I despair.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/12/2019 10:10

I was gutted by the election result but have bounced back a lot quicker than I expected to, and one of the reasons is that I can't see a Johnson government with a substantial majority waving through the reforms to the GRA. Blair's government was lobbied hard to introduce the GRA in the first place and back then, when hardly anyone knew anything about the subject, Parliament accepted far too readily, with minimal critical thinking, that this was just a straightforward add on to extending gay rights and anyway it would only affect a few thousand people. Perfectly clear from Hansard at the time that some MPs could see the potential problems, but they were written off as right-wing dinosaurs, especially as they included Anne Widdecombe and Norman Tebbit. Most people swallowed whole the line that this was being kind to an oppressed minority and wouldn't affect anyone else at all, and look where that's got us.

I really don't think that could happen now. Journalists like Helen Lewis are part of the reason why, and for that I thank her. It could have happened with a Corbyn government, though, or even in a hung parliament, as part of some sort of horsetrading.

nauticant · 17/12/2019 10:30

Many of the stupid laws that went through in the Blair era were cheered through by youngish inexperienced MPs who would go along with anything so long as they were feeling comfortable enough in their crowd.

We're going to see similar but on steroids with the current set of Tory MPs. We might be lucky over potential GRA amendments and other mad stuff but we'll be shocked at the Trumpian changes that end up being made.

Thethiniceofanewday · 17/12/2019 13:50

GC account WingsOverScotland came to her defence and has been suspended from Twitter.

LizzieSiddal · 17/12/2019 14:40

What a surprise.

NotTerfNorCis · 17/12/2019 14:43

Note to James Greig - no one is 'slagging you' . They quoted you for being part of a bullying campaign. Get a grip.

youllhavehadyourtea · 17/12/2019 19:31

GC account WingsOverScotland came to her defence and has been suspended from Twitter.

Wings has been stoutly GC for ages. He's now permanently banned from twitter as of last night. I'm surprised his twitter account lasted as long as it did.

He's not everyone's cup of tea - Lass ( oh I do miss Lass)detested him, but he's done a fabulous job of raising GC awareness to a group (mostly male, but not all) who otherwise would have sailed on by unaware.

He dropped in here before, about a year or so ago?

WIngs, if you're reading, hope you get reinstated.

And Helen Flowers

SunsetBeetch · 17/12/2019 19:55

Wings got suspended for calling someone a cunt but this person (apparently a writer I've personally never heard of him) told Graham Linehan to "shut up cunt" and his account is still up.

Also: laughing at those tossers above getting salty about Mumsnet when they have behaved far worse.

Please do join Mumsnet, James. We'd love to hear how you think you and the rest of the men attacking Helen were in the right. We're all ears, bro.

PreseaCombatir · 17/12/2019 19:58

They’re slagging off my screenshots 😂

LangCleg · 17/12/2019 20:09

Jog on, James. You're a mere roadie in comparison to Eve and the Monitors, if your mum has to find your mentions for you.

SunsetBeetch · 17/12/2019 20:16

You're such a boomer Presea Grin

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 17/12/2019 20:18

I also pre-ordered Helen's book after seeing that obvious dose of misogynistic bullshit. Sounds like it was good for sales at least.
