Lunette (menstrual cups) policing our language.

littlecabbage · 16/12/2019 12:04

I was interested in the MN sponsored thread about Lunette menstrual cups, and so had a look at the Lunette website. Unfortunately, there is an entire page dedicated to discussing “cis-women” and multiple “genders”, and lecturing us all on “how feminine-only language hurts” and how they would like to police our language for us.

I will therefore not be buying this product.

What to Say Instead

So, it’s pretty clear that the use of female-centric words needs to cease in the menstruation industry. This begs the question of what to say instead.

Depending on the context, you can try to avoid naming groups of people. For example, instead of saying “Some people who menstruate prefer Lunette” you could say “Lunette is a preferred menstrual care product”

We’ve changed racist labels. We’ve changed sexist labels. Now, let’s change cisexist ones. Periods are not inherently feminine. Periods are a biological phenomenon that impacts the lives of people who are born with a uterus. We have the power to grow toward inclusion of all people who menstruate, and now is the time for that shift. All people deserve to feel comfortable taking care of themselves during their time of the month. Period.

Should it not be cis women led?

Gives littlbrowndog a virtual smack on the back if the legs and sends multiple messages

birdsdestiny · 16/12/2019 19:31

I completely understand why they did it though. Wokeness has just been proved to be immensely popularHmm

EmpressLesbianInChair · 16/12/2019 19:33

Oh EmpressLesbianInChair, those pads are lovely. My wee lass has already had a look and is picking some out. Thank you.

You’re welcome,Totally Smile

littlbrowndog · 16/12/2019 19:37

Eek 😬

littlbrowndog · 16/12/2019 19:38

Well if you going to be woke be full woke. Go broke

Itsallgonetoofar · 16/12/2019 20:04

I'm on a warning so can't say what I think I'm just going to have to do some tutting Hmm

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 16/12/2019 20:06

Did you go too far Itsallgonetoofar?

merrymouse · 16/12/2019 20:06

What a strange company.

Periods are something that only females have, but I don't think there is anything particularly 'feminine' - about having a period.

However, the first page you come to when you go to their site is a picture of an open mouthed woman with bright red lip stick.

merrymouse · 16/12/2019 20:15

I can only describe the expression on the model's face as 'sex doll'.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/12/2019 20:19

@SylvanianFrenemies

Sorry, I’m female. I was trying to suggest questions for the menz who want to test the cups. Sorry It didn’t come across. Honest. Very very female.

FlamingoAndJohn · 16/12/2019 20:23

but I don't think there is anything particularly 'feminine' about having a period

This is because everything that we are told is feminine is doing dainty pretty thing and being all soft and fluffy. Not the reality of femininity which is blood or babies coming out of your vagina giving you pain and making a mess.

SylvanianFrenemies · 16/12/2019 20:23

@Dobbythehouseelk - really, the vagina kind of female? How passe.

JustASmallTownCurl · 16/12/2019 20:25

FFS.

My head is going to EXPLODE soon.

Periods are not inherently "feminine" because that word is subjective and not scientific.

They ARE a female bodily function. They are. They are, they are, they are. Not all women menstruate. But everyone who menstruates is a woman.

I won't menstruate after the menopause. I will still be a woman. I won't menstruate I'm pregnancy. I will still be a woman. I didn't menstruate when I had anorexia. I was still a woman.

Male bodied people cannot menstruate.

My trans friends are fucking SICK of this shit. It makes them look like unreasonable, entitled and manipulative people and they aren't! They are regular, sensible and decent people who are (just like us) having to deal with a tiny percentage of a minority group who insist on shouting louder than all the people they claim they speak for but in fact do untold damage to.

It's like universal gaslighting.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/12/2019 20:25

Afraid so. Very dull these days.

FlamingoAndJohn · 16/12/2019 20:25

I love the reusable pads linked to upthread.
Some of the designs are brilliant. I love ‘anything you can do I can do bleeding’. 🩸

Siameasy · 16/12/2019 20:28

I have made my own CSP in the past. If you’re into sewing at all they really aren’t hard. I’m a pretty basic sewer. I have an overlocker but a basic sewing machine and a set of snaps and pliers is enough. Material wise - cotton for the top, scraps for the unseen parts and cheap polyester fleece blankets for the back. What I also made is some mini CSP key rings and Xmas tree decs (!)

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 16/12/2019 20:30

I'm on a warning so can't say what I think I'm just going to have to do some tutting

You should go the whole hog, tut and move aside. That’s a partially good way of showing your displeasure when you find a hairy bollocked male in a female space, apparently. Grin

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 16/12/2019 20:31

What I also made is some mini CSP key rings and Xmas tree decs(!)

I’m now picturing tiny, holly patterned fanny pads hanging from the Christmas tree. Grin

merrymouse · 16/12/2019 20:32

From the page linked to by the OP

"People past menopause don't experience periods and they are not inherently less feminine."

Do they think that biological sex no longer has consequences after the menopause?

I am now concerned about the safety of these products because I'm not entirely convinced that the designers know what a period is.

ChristmassySpice · 16/12/2019 20:32

I'm a very regular product tester. I've just added my thoughts. They will be deleted for sure. But Flora dumped MN because apparently we are all Trans hating activists. I actually took part in some of the Flora tests. It's revolting. So I have no problem in not buying it. The same as I have no problem not buying a Lunette cup.
Because let's face it, these are all companies wanting to make money out of women. Whilst being disrespectful of women.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 16/12/2019 20:36

I mean, if sex is irrelevant and we're now in an age where anyone can have a period, why did they ask Mumsnet to test the product for them? Why advertise here?

AnyOldPrion · 16/12/2019 20:37

"People past menopause don't experience periods and they are not inherently less feminine."

As I throw my duvet aside in the middle of the night and feel the sweat rolling down my womanly bosom, I can confirm that I have rarely felt more feminine!

ChristmassySpice · 16/12/2019 20:38

My thoughts exactly ProdigalKitten

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 16/12/2019 20:41

I have noticed in the tv ad That Tena Lady has been dropped, they are just called Tena, yet that mans advert the product is called Tena man..... Hmm

AuntSpiker · 16/12/2019 20:43

This utter nonsense has seriously pissed me off:

The genders that experience a monthly period include:
Transgender men
Agender people
Nonbinary people
Cisgender women
These groups of people all experience the monthly flow of blood from their uterus and, decidedly, not all of them identify as “feminine”. Additionally, plenty of people who do identify as feminine don't experience menstruation

How very woke that transmen come top of the list. And women? Adult human female don't menstruate apparently. And what has femininity got to do with any of this? Maybe ask Sam Smith, he'll they'll know
