Lunette (menstrual cups) policing our language.

littlecabbage · 16/12/2019 12:04

I was interested in the MN sponsored thread about Lunette menstrual cups, and so had a look at the Lunette website. Unfortunately, there is an entire page dedicated to discussing “cis-women” and multiple “genders”, and lecturing us all on “how feminine-only language hurts” and how they would like to police our language for us.

I will therefore not be buying this product.

What to Say Instead

So, it’s pretty clear that the use of female-centric words needs to cease in the menstruation industry. This begs the question of what to say instead.

Depending on the context, you can try to avoid naming groups of people. For example, instead of saying “Some people who menstruate prefer Lunette” you could say “Lunette is a preferred menstrual care product”

We’ve changed racist labels. We’ve changed sexist labels. Now, let’s change cisexist ones. Periods are not inherently feminine. Periods are a biological phenomenon that impacts the lives of people who are born with a uterus. We have the power to grow toward inclusion of all people who menstruate, and now is the time for that shift. All people deserve to feel comfortable taking care of themselves during their time of the month. Period.

Here is the MN thread:

Not everyone who menstruates identifies as a women.

Nevertheless...

EmpressLesbianInChair · 17/12/2019 16:56

Not everyone who menstruates identifies as a women

But they're all human females.

LangCleg · 17/12/2019 17:02

Oh noes! Another intervention. I'll get a hernia at this rate!

FlamingoAndJohn · 17/12/2019 17:03

Don’t get me wrong. Everyone who menstruates IS a woman, but they don’t always identify as such.
I still have no truck with the removal of the word woman from the discussion about menstrual products. But I think that the changing in the wording is for the benefit of woke try hards trans men who actually do menstruate rather that trans women who don’t.

IM0GEN · 18/12/2019 12:28

Most people who get breast cancer are women, but a few are men.

But no one is suggesting that we stop screening women and change all the health education literature to pictures of men and staff breast screening with men.

Because women are the majority and to stop targeting them puts them at risk, just for the needs of a few men.

It’s common sense really.

And generally, men with breast cancer are too busy getting treatment and, you know, trying not to die. They are not whinging about feeling marginalised and excluded or even literally murdered because women getting screened and men don’t.

Breast screening is painful and embarrassing and not the least bit sexy so unsurprisingly enough, trans men are not queueing up to demand that they be centred in it.

IM0GEN · 18/12/2019 12:29

Oops I mean trans women . Of course trans men need breast screening because they are XX women.

Ereshkigal · 18/12/2019 12:49

But I think that the changing in the wording is for the benefit of woke try hards trans men who actually do menstruate rather that trans women who don’t.

It's about breaking the link between "woman" and "female bodied" for both sexes of trans people. However it is the power MTFs have which ensures its success, in a way it doesn't generally for male body issues. They could use language like "women and trans men". But they don't.

I assume companies have to pay MN to be featured on the product testing page, so they are restricting comments to people who tested the product.

But now we know comments are being deleted how do we know that MN arent deleting negative comments left by testers too?

Basically, the reviews are pretty worthless now.

HorseWithNoTimeForCis · 18/12/2019 13:41

I agree. The company surely would be interested to know how their website literature goes down with customers as well as the product. If I had a company I'd want to know if what I say on the packet is turning off my customer base.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 18/12/2019 13:42

I don’t think they are interested in reviews. It’s a big advert and they want the MN logo on the packaging. MN recommends.

littlbrowndog · 18/12/2019 13:44

Agree horse

Or if I was Philomena clunk I wouldn’t care as I am stating the true facts

LonginesPrime · 18/12/2019 14:02

I think it's more beneficial to MNHQ to be recommending an 'inclusive' brand at this point.

DH has commented that even if he had put on one of my dresses for a month and called himself by a female name he would not have grown the anatomy to need a mooncup.

Of course he could. It would make a good waterproof covering for his meat and two veg, on a wet day.

littlecabbage · 18/12/2019 18:06

Hi
Just wanted to say thank you for reviews, you have persuaded me to try menstrual cups! These are currently on offer on amazon too :-)

This has just appeared on the product thread. I didn't realise they are available on Amazon. And Amazon is a site where items can be reviewed.....

OP posts:
HorseWithNoTimeForCis · 18/12/2019 18:15

I bet at least half of Amazon's customers are xx.

darkside29 · 19/12/2019 03:03

Periods are not inherently feminine. Periods are a biological phenomenon that impacts the lives of people who are born with a uterus.

That is the stupidest, most dim witted thing I have ever read, and that is saying something.

Speak the TRUTH.

Don’t say anything ‘instead’.

MedusasButterDish · 19/12/2019 06:19

Lunette came seeking customers and feedback on Mumsnet, not Tumblr. Presumably they got genuine and (knowing Mumsnetters) articulate user reviews rather than fetishist feedback.

If women are good enough clients for you, Lunette, why not change the language of your page, so as not to be alienating and excluding? By all means use words like female and biological, but people with uteruses is already narky, and the use of a word like "cisexist" [sic] is really a bit aggressive of you. Are you calling us some kind of oppressors for bleeding? Confused

Even though "woke" has become a bit of a dirty word on Mumsnet, it's only really the social and sexual aspects of wokeness which are "problematic" [sic]. The environment is still a concern for many women, meaning menstrual cups do have a potential market here. You didn't make a mistake in seeking MNers' feedback on tge product; now you're being given some extra feedback on your message.

JustASmallTownCurl · 19/12/2019 07:49

Has the review thread gone? Just searched and can't find it?

JustASmallTownCurl · 19/12/2019 07:50

IGNORE ME, I found it using the link in this thread. Must just be my search function in the app playing up.

IShineAShoe · 20/12/2019 03:49

I find it interesting that a company so against feminising periods is called Lunette.

From dictionary.com “a noun suffix occurring originally in loanwords from French, where it has been used in a variety of diminutive and hypocoristic formations (brunette; cigarette; coquette; etiquette; rosette); as an English suffix, -ette forms diminutives (kitchenette; novelette; sermonette), distinctively feminine nouns (majorette; usherette), and names of imitation products (leatherette).”

Strange that if they are so against being linked to the feminine, they haven’t thought to change their company name.

shedquarters · 20/12/2019 07:19

Is there Tena Lady product testing? Or Tena Person.

HorseWithNoBlueHairs · 20/12/2019 09:01

Tena Penny.

LangCleg · 20/12/2019 09:06

Lunette came seeking customers and feedback on Mumsnet, not Tumblr.

Quite. You'd think that feedback from testers that overwhelmingly said, "It's not just the product that influences what we think of your product, it's your corporate values too. And since those values are queer theory-influenced and anti-woman, we won't be buying," would be valuable knowledge to a marketing department, wouldn't you?

Otherwise why pay for the feedback in the first place?

shedquarters · 20/12/2019 11:23

Amnesty International weighing in. - trans rights = human rights.
This is not in question. Trans-rights are indeed human rights. Trans people have human rights. Nobody is arguing about this. I have not personally seen anyone advocating that trans-people shouldn't have or expect thier human rights.
The question is are trans-rights Women's Rights. Do trans-rights trump women's rights.

Doesn't seem to be much of an issue for trans-men though. They are not bullying, cancelling, picketing, threatening jobs of men who don't consent. Wonder why that is.
