Lunette (menstrual cups) policing our language.

littlecabbage · 16/12/2019 12:04

I was interested in the MN sponsored thread about Lunette menstrual cups, and so had a look at the Lunette website. Unfortunately, there is an entire page dedicated to discussing “cis-women” and multiple “genders”, and lecturing us all on “how feminine-only language hurts” and how they would like to police our language for us.

I will therefore not be buying this product.

What to Say Instead

So, it’s pretty clear that the use of female-centric words needs to cease in the menstruation industry. This begs the question of what to say instead.

Depending on the context, you can try to avoid naming groups of people. For example, instead of saying “Some people who menstruate prefer Lunette” you could say “Lunette is a preferred menstrual care product”

We’ve changed racist labels. We’ve changed sexist labels. Now, let’s change cisexist ones. Periods are not inherently feminine. Periods are a biological phenomenon that impacts the lives of people who are born with a uterus. We have the power to grow toward inclusion of all people who menstruate, and now is the time for that shift. All people deserve to feel comfortable taking care of themselves during their time of the month. Period.

Here is the MN thread:

Don’t be pissexist. It’s Tena People That Piss Themselves, donchyerknow.

If I don't get off this thread I'm going to get myself into terrible trouble!

Pissexsit.

HandsOffMyRights · 16/12/2019 17:34

Loonette.

nocluewhattodoo · 16/12/2019 17:36

I was one of the testers, I hadn't seen any of the ridiculous refusal to use the word woman, nor the hideous 'advice' about breast binding. I had recommended lunettes to others, and was planning on buying another lunette when the time came, I won't be now.

AuntSpiker · 16/12/2019 17:38

Should anyone wish to point out Lunette's loonyness, here's their twitter page:

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 16/12/2019 17:44

Oh FFS I will not buy from a company that doesn’t know that every person from the dawn of time who had a period was female & therefore a woman or girl.
Angry

GCAcademic · 16/12/2019 17:48

They’ve deleted my message on the feedback thread. It isn’t even a deleted message, like it was never there.

This seems to be the new "special" kind of moderation for FWR posters who appear on parts of the forum where we shouldn't be seen.

littlbrowndog · 16/12/2019 17:51

Jeez honestly hope they look back in a couple of years and think were we zombie infected cos sure as hell something has to,explain collective madness

IM0GEN · 16/12/2019 17:51

Oh dear, that’s another customer you have lost, Lunette. And I buy them for my teenage daughters, who have decades of menstruating ahead of them.

DDs friend writes a popular blog about reducing waste, I must tell about this and suggest she recommends mooncups .

Marketing fail.

littlbrowndog · 16/12/2019 17:51

Yeah the disappeared GC

EmpressLesbianInChair · 16/12/2019 17:54

I buy from RagHag on Etsy. She knows what a woman is. www.etsy.com/uk/shop/RagHagShop

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 16/12/2019 17:54

Why did they choose Mumsnet for product testing? As opposed to Four Four Two online for example?

Truly 'tis a mystery.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 16/12/2019 17:56

Or Pistonheads or ARRSE.

Anyone can menstruate after all...

We're the site's dirty little not secret!

Michael - the cat was out of the bag long since, dear.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 16/12/2019 17:58

Have Tena Ladies gone to the dark side yet?

I sincerely hope not. I'm more in need of them than a mooncup these days anyway.

Beerandpancakes · 16/12/2019 18:04

I can recommend organicup as a really good product that is is still happy to talk about girls, women and female anatomy

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 16/12/2019 18:04

RagHag has an Edgar Allen Poe themed pad. I may be in love.

Waterandlemonjuice · 16/12/2019 18:05

I’m shocked at this, truly.

WombOfOnesOwn · 16/12/2019 18:06

Even if one accepted trans men as totally masculine, let me pose a hypothetical.

Imagine any other product where the audience for the product is 99% one type of person, and 1% or less another type of person.

Do you think most products that involved this kind of percentage difference for two audiences would make sure every piece of marketing collateral was inclusive of that 1%, with no more messaging whatsoever tailored specifically to the audience buying 99% of your product?

I work in marketing. This would NEVER HAPPEN with any other differentiated audience positioning. Never.

Waterandlemonjuice · 16/12/2019 18:08

apparently, they’re 100% feminist, hmm, I beg to differ

ProfYaffle · 16/12/2019 18:09

Disappointed to hear this. I was going to buy a Lunette after reading the reviews as my mooncup can be a tad painful sometimes. I thought their smaller cup might be helpful.

No way I'm going to buy anything from a company that tries to scold me in this way.

LangCleg · 16/12/2019 18:16

differentiated audience positioning

I love Mumsnet, even if Michael does tell us off about our periods. Which is, you know, a bit weird.

I did not know this term. And now I do!

testing987654321 · 16/12/2019 18:18

You can leave queries on their website. That might be a way to question their language without derailing the mumsnet thread.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 16/12/2019 18:18

What if, hypothetically, an FWR regular had used Lunette and had something to say about the product that might be useful to other potential users, and also wasn't happy with the wokescolding marketing? She should shut up because one post from the witches per thread is sufficient?

LangCleg · 16/12/2019 18:19

I'm sorry for the inappropriate levity. I can't help it. This is hilarious as well as toothgrindingly annoying!

Lunette, you are a bunch of plonkers. (Did you see what I did there?

Deary, deary me.

SylvanianFrenemies · 16/12/2019 18:21

FFS Lunette. This is just painful and pathetic.

I won't be buying any cups (or period pants) for me or my daughters from companies who don't recognise that females (girls, women) menstruate. Males don't. Gender is irrelevant to this. It's all about sex. We can't identify into, or our of, biology. Being female isn't something to be ashamed of.
