Need help navigating Mumsnet threads

Lamahaha · 07/12/2019 07:15

Not a FWR thread so sorry.

I find MN so hard to navigate. Sometimes I don't log in for a day or two and threads I'm watching have moved on several pages. The "I'm watching" option doesn't help because you only get the last 4 or 5 posts.

I've heard people say they're "bookmarking" and I have started using the "bookmark" option -- but how does one find that bookmark again? I've looked all over the main Talk page and don't see the option, "go to your bookmarks". I thought it might be the "I'm on" link but that is really just literally, the threads I've posted on. So not helpful.

I've been on many forums over the years and most take you directly and automatically to the page or post you last read.

This is not a complaint, just expressing a bit of frustration! I do like to start reading where I last left off but waste so much time guessing or going back and back and back...
Thank you.

I'm relatively new and having the same problem. 🤷‍♀️

Goldenchildsmum · 07/12/2019 08:04

Are you using the app? Imo the app is easy. Just comment or watch and then return to the thread , find where you left off and start reading

BigRedBoat · 07/12/2019 08:12

Are you on the app? Swipe left and choose 'bookmark' and click 'watch this thread at the top' once you go back to the thread on the 'I'm watching' section it will take you back to your bookmark.

Lamahaha · 07/12/2019 08:18

I usually read MN on my laptop. I don't have the app; don't really like using my phone for reading. Is it not possible on the site itself?

It works fine on the website version.

When you bookmark a particular post, not a thread, do you hover your cursor in the bottom right hand corner, see Bookmark, click on that, and see it change to Saved!?

Lamahaha · 07/12/2019 08:25

Yes, the bookmarks change to Saved. But how do I find them again after I've been away for a few hours/days?

When you click on the thread title (either by going to the FWR section or by clicking on the title of the post in the watches section) it should take you to your bookmarked post.

OK thanks I'll try that next time.

The bookmarks only work if you click on the thread title - at least on my iPad - so when I go to a thread from "I'm On" but click on one of the latest posts rather than the title, the bookmark bit doesn't seem to work.

Lamahaha · 08/12/2019 05:10

Thanks all, I've figured it out and put it into practice now. I see that it means ALWAYS bookmarking the last post I read, but I guess it doesn't take much effort.

New here too and having similar issues. My "watching" only shows posts I started or commented on not read so I'm learning how to do that.
I'm struggling most with all the acronyms that are used.

What's a DD and AIBU?! Tried posting a thread but go no responses and took it down after a few days of being up

AdaColeman · 08/12/2019 06:15

For a list of all the acronyms, click the drop down menu button next to the large TALK at the top left of the page on lap top/iPad.

Questions about how MN works are best posted in Site Issues

You'll get your questions answered and it's (the only?) topic MNHQ read in its entirety. So if you want them to know what users think of how the site works, at the time the issues are cropping up for you, then that's the place

Lamahaha · 08/12/2019 07:08

Auntie, MN is in general not easy to navigate, especially if you really only hang out here! I did not even know there's an "in site issues" department. I think it's OK, since many newcomers/lurkers will have the same problem I had and wouldn't think to go to "in site issues".

I read it on my mobile but not using the app and I usually go to "I'm on" which shows threads I've posted on. I always have them bookmarked and it takes me to where I had read up to. I don't know if bookmarked threads I've not commented on get shown in "I'm on" though.

HarrietTheFly · 08/12/2019 09:53

Oh maybe the ones I've bookmarked but not posted in are in "watching". Not sure Confused

AuntieStella · 08/12/2019 15:33

"Auntie, MN is in general not easy to navigate, especially if you really only hang out here!"

I wouid recommend that you, and indeed all new posters, read the list of topics, the FAQs, the acronym list, and indeed all the stuff linked at the top of all pages. Just as basic orientation.

And yes, I'm not completely stupid, which is why I also know that people don't always spot everything, which is why I post to give information. Some people are grateful for a heads up, which is why I will continue to do so.

stumbledin · 08/12/2019 15:40

This is interesting as someone who has been on mumsnet over a year, have learnt some new things to day.

Sometimes the problem is if you dont know how it is a problem you dont know which part of the site to search.

But as some are being so helpful with tips can anyone explain why I have suddently stopped getting notifications about threads I am on.

Could I have clicked something by mistake. It was working fine for my up until about the middle of the week! Confused

AuntieStella · 08/12/2019 19:52

Sorry - don't know the answer as I never used the feature (so just posting to bump this back into active in the hope it's seen by someone who does know)

ErrolTheDragon · 08/12/2019 20:01

The bookmark function is just so you can find it on a thread. When you open a thread you've bookmarked you'll be taken to the bookmark. There's no function for a list of bookmarks.

You can always bookmark a specific thread using standard browser functionality, I suppose.

Time40 · 08/12/2019 20:02

Genius! Thank you!! I've been on MN for about two years, and I had no idea that there was a bookmark function. That's so useful!

While we're on the subject of site navigation, does anyone know if there is a way of reading just an OP's posts, and not all the replies in between?

AFAIK, no. But I damned well wish there was - and I know it's been asked for in Site Stuff more than once.
