I can't find the old M & S boycott threads on this fast moving board but was interested to see under this DM article that some of the top rated comments included criticisms of their sparkly mixed sex changing rooms - M & Sleaze indeed as someone else commented on another thread.

I'm just getting a DM link saying m & s is frumpy. Is that right? Is there something in the comments section?

Uncompromisingwoman · 06/12/2019 09:54

Yes - it's the comments underneath. I just noticed that two of the highest rated comments made reference to the changing room debacle.

Ah yes. Mrs Sprinkle. Difficult to find on my small phone... The reply to her about screaming if a member of the opposite comes into the women's changin rooms. Can decide if that's genius or deranged. Certainly would draw attention to it though 😁. Guess I'm just not naturally a screamer.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 06/12/2019 10:02

Can't decide, should read. Doh.

Milanimilani · 07/12/2019 07:06

Screaming sounds fun until you realise it might result in a walloping. Sooner stay away from there than risk this. Are all of these shops desperate to get rid of their female shoppers so all the stores close?

Whatisthisfuckery · 07/12/2019 10:18

Screaming is so unladylike, I thought we were supposed to tut very loudly and move away.

Uncompromisingwoman · 07/12/2019 12:23

We are certainly not meant to complain Whatisthisfuckery . Cos that's transphobic Hmm

OP posts:
SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 09/12/2019 18:31

So what is the best response, if not screaming, or is just avoiding M & S altogether, as suggested?

Uncompromisingwoman · 09/12/2019 18:43

I've cancelled my account with them. Christmas and weekly food treats no longer comes from them - interestingly the reduction in single use plastic is huge. Today I've just spent £150 on Christmas vouchers - normally they would be M & S but not one of them is. I know lots of women said they would be shopping elsewhere - it would be interesting to see if they've followed through?

I usually spend at least £500 in there at Christmas. Went to JL this year instead. Won't put another penny in their pockets until they go back to single sex changing rooms.

EverardDigby · 09/12/2019 19:04

I haven't shopped in there since, I normally would have popped in for a couple of ready meals or sandwiches each week, and I need some new tights, which I would normally get from there but looking online. I did buy a M&S cardi, but £7 from eBay!

BarbaraStrozzi · 09/12/2019 19:11

M&S (changing room issues aside) have stopped stocking decent polo neck wool jumpers. Badly designed (i.e. neckline terrible) acrylic horrors. I'm buying on line.

Ventured to Morrisons (have announced they're keeping single sex facilities) at the weekend (I used to shop there all the time when I lived in Yorkshire).

ItsChristmaaaaaaaaas · 09/12/2019 19:20

Errr Span, didn’t you get the memo on JL?

Sunkisses · 09/12/2019 19:37

Yes, @Span1elsRock, I am afraid that John Lewis has also fallen, and they've opened up their female changing rooms to men. Their normally impeccable Customer Services department have been incredibly rude to loyal customers too who have complained about this. Phenomenally badly handled.

ItsChristmaaaaaaaaas · 09/12/2019 19:43

Yes - I wrote to ask if this was actually the case and they said ‘yes, bugger off’. I asked if a more se our member of customer case would please explain why and she said ‘no, bugger off - and that’s my last word on the subject’.

Uncompromisingwoman · 09/12/2019 19:53

I've also got rid of my John Lewis loyalty card. We're looking at a new washing machine & fridge freezer - ours are on their last legs (and came originally from JL). The new ones will come from somewhere else.
Companies that show contempt for women no longer get my custom.

I have stopped going to M&S. That will be a couple of hundred pounds in food shopping and another hundred 💯 n kid's clothes so far.

EsmeShelby · 09/12/2019 19:59

Not been back to JL either

ItsChristmaaaaaaaaas · 09/12/2019 20:02

Not have I. Or M&S.

I make a point of saying loudly to my companion on the bus (every day) as we pass the large M&S with the video running of the jumpers ad ‘ooooooo - looks like the jumpers give you fleas!’

I have boycotted a few brands and stores on this basis and I haven’t missed them one bit. And I have discovered some brilliant products, for which I am eternally grateful to the great bearded rainbow.

Babdoc · 09/12/2019 20:16

Also boycotting M and S. I won’t be getting any of their Christmas food.
I didn’t buy much from their clothing range anyway as it’s shit, but I’ve stopped altogether. Got my most recent batch of undies from the supermarket instead, and they were much cheaper. I won’t be back to M and S.

StandUpStraight · 09/12/2019 20:38

Saving a bomb. Waitrose to Aldi plus veg box and local butcher. Yes I have to psych myself up for the food throwing by the cashier and the handling of the groceries 5 times because of the bagging-at-the-shelf thing, but the warm glow I get from watching my money not go to JL is more than worth it. Haven’t set foot in M&S at all either.

ItsChristmaaaaaaaaas · 09/12/2019 20:46

It looks like I need a new washing machine as well as the revamp we were planning on the new year. I had planned to go to JL for all that but tough.

Uncompromisingwoman · 09/12/2019 20:53

My bank balance is infinitely improved. I was a loyal customer of M & S for years being prepared to pay more for what I saw was 'quality'. I'd even use their food outlets for things like coffees in a misplaced idea of brand loyalty. I now walk past them to the independent coffee shop that's opened nearby. Small pleasures.

Daughterofmabel · 09/12/2019 21:07

They still havent replied to my email. Saving a fortune bringing my own lunch instead of buying it there.

WhereYouLeftIt · 09/12/2019 21:11

I had already reduced my food shopping considerably in the past year because I'm trying to reduce the plastic waste (what did happen to Plan A, I wonder?) but was still buying loose veg (potatoes, broccoli etc.) and the occasional bakery item. So in fairness, they haven't lost much more from me.

But, I had been planning to buy some exercise clothing and they had been my first choice until then. And I had planned for a new winter coat this year, so that money went to Seasalt instead.
