Someone on Emily Maitlis’ twitter thread is now talking about “folx” instead of folk as a respectful way to include all identities. Someone please tell me it was originally a typo and this tweeter is taking the piss. Please?????

Well Napoleon will be welcomed with open arms into M&S changing rooms
And before you know it will be squeezing his trotters into tights.

And M&S will be advertising a whole other type of pulled pork.

But why the ‘x’? I don’t understand. And I thought ‘folk’ was the most inclusive of words because it meant, well, everyone and anyone.

For the record, none of the black or Asian women I know in the real world like 'women of colour' either, or BAME for that matter. But they're old like me (ie over 40) so probably don't count.

I absolutely hate it, and I am one. And I'm old too.

In my country, "coloured" is/was not a pejorative; it used to be a quite ordinary everyday word meaning "mixed race" or "brown skinned" . Until America got hold of it and deemed it taboo.

I don't really understand why "of colour" is not racist, but "coloured" is. I rather like the word, it conjures up pretty rainbows. But of course, even rainbows have been ruined now.

Ah, there are just so many ways to say “I am considerably woker than yowwww” these days.

Makes it easy to spot a wanxer at fifty paces mind yox Grin

HermioneMakepeace · 08/12/2019 07:51

Can we please go back to 'wimmin'?

Besidesthepoint · 08/12/2019 08:01

I can never be woke, I just can't keep up and don't understand half of it. I even find it exhausting to read tbh. I miss the 80s, much simpler times.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 08/12/2019 08:05

Thank god for the letter X, otherwise how would we know who were the goodies on twatter.

Me too. And I think we should bring back Spare Rib. Although I'm probably one of few people on here who remember it Grin.

I prefer Latin yes I’m just saying I wouldn’t put Latinx in the same category as the ludicrous and offensive “womxn”

But as a primarily English speaker, I just don't think it's something we can say is fine. It simply makes no sense in Spanish - no more sense than womxn. This is why I group them together as ridiculous ideas. It's like saying 'la casx' instead of 'la casa' - it's just not a word. Gendered (in the gramatical sense) words are just as different as women/men, so making it latinx, rather than latino/latina is just as nonsensical.
