Someone on Emily Maitlis’ twitter thread is now talking about “folx” instead of folk as a respectful way to include all identities. Someone please tell me it was originally a typo and this tweeter is taking the piss. Please?????

Smiley faces were at Naut's wordplay

Deliriumoftheendless · 06/12/2019 16:48

I’m ok with folk- I’m from Yorkshire.

I guess the saying “there’s nowt so queer as folk” is totally in now.

howard97A · 06/12/2019 18:13

Apparently, she helpfully explains, we have to spell it like that now, to be explicitly inclusive of transwomen and women of colour.

Shouldn't it really be folxtpoc+?

(The ? is not part of the word .. it's just a normal question mark)

(… or maybe not …)

TinselAngel · 06/12/2019 18:14

I'm enjoying saying "follocks" in my head every time I see the title of this thread.

NumbersStation · 06/12/2019 18:22

@SpartacusAutisticus

You’ve nailed it with your snowflake. Grin

I am woman hear me roar.

I am woman - watch me conform and yield to those who demand I lose my identity.

Hmm. Which one do I prefer? Hmm

You can take your folx and womxn and ram it straight up your arsehxle.

RiddleyW · 06/12/2019 18:32

Latinx is a bit different, I can see the rationale there - Latino as the default actually does exclude women

NumbersStation · 06/12/2019 18:32

Sorry the second example should have been womxn watch me conform obviously.

Perhaps all these do gooders need to start their pish with autocorrect before they start foisting their opinions on ordinary people.

Haworthia · 06/12/2019 18:37

I hate the proliferation of “folk”. Always preceded by “trans and non-binary”. Why is “people” not enough? Is it because “folk” is supposed to sound more... huggy and happy clappy and rainbow?

Anyway... thanks, I hate it.

VMisaMarshmallow · 06/12/2019 18:48

Folk or folks is common in Scotland. Moaning about that word makes people seem snobbish ....

I also keep thinking of Queer as Folk and can imagine the responses of the lgb characters and the f-ing, c-ing, t-ing and bastards that would be coming from them if they were expected to accept and celebrate folx

VMisaMarshmallow · 06/12/2019 18:54

RiddleyW I thought that previously, but decided to opt for Latina as generally if I used it I’d be likely to be talking to/about women, and I figure any chance to counter the use of male terms being used as covering both isn’t a bad thing. But I’m also that annoying mother loudly telling my girls to watch for the green woman when waiting at crossings, so maybe I’m just a cox.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/12/2019 19:17

I'm Scottish but haven't lived in Scotland for half a century, so I'd feel it was pretentious to use folks.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/12/2019 19:21

I'm also Scottish and have never said folks in my life.

Use the word Latin?

RiddleyW · 06/12/2019 21:50

I prefer Latin yes I’m just saying I wouldn’t put Latinx in the same category as the ludicrous and offensive “womxn”

MIdgebabe · 06/12/2019 21:53

I work in an environment with people from all over the place , and folk / folks is pretty normal, especially in a "get real/ be down to earth context

FlyingOink · 06/12/2019 22:26

I think they're both awful. "Latino" is only the default in the US.
There's a strong anti-Mexican sentiment in the US and a colourism within Latin communities that puts indigenous people and black people at the bottom.
We don't see much of that debate here because we don't have the same demographics, in the UK we are aware of the cultural differences between West Indians and West Africans whereas in the US it might be between a white Cuban and a Guatemalan refugee. Latinx doesn't cover any of that, it in itself is lazy shorthand.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/12/2019 22:31

It's interesting that I haven't seen anyone trying to x the terms Afro Latina or Afro Latino, which are just as clearly sexed as Latino in general.

FlamingoAndJohn · 06/12/2019 22:35

Does this mean we are going to bring back aviatrix to mean a female pilot?

Anyway, folk is ungendered, surely.

Lumene · 06/12/2019 22:38

I don’t get it. Is it to be inclusive of those who can’t spell?

RiddleyW · 06/12/2019 23:00

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/12/2019 23:07

Sigh. And of course there's this.

*Within our community, there are Afro-Latinx who pretend black when it is convenient and then try to blend right back into anti-blackness when it is not."

Creepster · 06/12/2019 23:21

People who have read Animal Farm will recognize this for what it is immediately.
Obedience training, just like the pronoun requirements.
