Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

So where have you been asked about your gender identity rather than your sex?

Just got a survey from ENO about a recent visit to the London Coliseum.

I was asked what my "gender identity" was.

I ticked "other" and explained I didn't have a gender identity, as there is no such thing, but I had a biological sex, which was female.

This substituting of "gender identity" for "sex" seems to have become mainstream in just the last year or so.

Apologies if there's already a thread on this, but if not, could people lease list below other companies/organisations who have now routinely removed all reference to biological sex in favour of gender identity?

To get a sense of the scale of the problem - and possible mass email or tweet them on this.

No idea why English National Opera would care that eg one of their male patrons likes to wear eyeliner on a Wednesday. Confused

A staff survey at work.

Glasgow Science Centre stands out 🤦🏻‍♀️
Is your gender Male/female/other
Other - my sex is female.

I'm a member of several paid survey sites and I always give them a few sentences of explanation about gender being an oppressive tool of the patriarchy if there is an 'other' box. if they ask for sex or say "are you: [ ] male [ ] female" they get the simple answer.

interestingly the frequency of seeing the latter is noticeably improving.

Lol. I like your style. Grin

Good on you!
So am I, and so do I.

Vegancat · 05/12/2019 03:04

I had to post a pre surgical form but did not cross out gender and write sex cos I got nervous I'd be labeled a terf and get treated poorly.
How stupid is that? And paranoid.

Never again.

StinkyWizleteets · 05/12/2019 03:07

Starting a college course they asked Gender Identity and Pronouns. I answered none to both.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/12/2019 03:09

I work for a local Authority and all.oud forms, database etc have "gender" rather than sex as part of the demographic information. Drives me mad.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/12/2019 03:15

Cannabis survey of all things. The poor surveyor had several minutes of me explaining sex and gender to him before I'm sure he recorded me as 'other'.

isabellerossignol · 05/12/2019 03:22

British Gymnastics asks if my child identifies as the sex they were assigned at birth, or something like that. It's an online form and you can't skip the question or add comments and it really infuriates me. Not least because some of the children who are members of British Gymnastics will be about four years old, so even if I believed in this crap (which I don't) I certainly wouldn't believe that a four year old would have any concept of identifying as a particular gender.

MarleneandBoycie · 05/12/2019 03:35

My doctors. I left it blank. I think it is important for those with a gender identity to let their primary care doctor know. BUT in medical areas what could be more important than fucking biology? There was nowhere on the form asking for sex, it’s ridiculous.

TiredofthisBS · 05/12/2019 06:21

I recently had a check up at the doctors and noticed they listed my gender not sex on the screen. A) this is presumptuous as it assumes I have a gender. B) it's woo complete woo. C) this is the NHS denying biological reality.

I can't wait until the day sanity returns and the adults get back in charge.

MangoesAreMyFavourite · 05/12/2019 06:31

It takes time to get all these databases changed. I want to donate blood, book app at my GP, the children's school - they all say Gender.
But women have complained for so long about the default being Mr, or the order of titles etc and are told it's the computers.... Can't change them so easily, what does it matter anyway. But this shit is everywhere.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 05/12/2019 06:35

I went to my local sexual health NHS clinic for the implant. The form asked me gender identity then asked if my gender identity corresponds with my sex assigned at birth. I told the woman I was really sorry but I didn't understand the question. She just rolled her eyes and told me not to worry about it.

MrsJamin · 05/12/2019 06:38

A council survey about safety in the community Hmm. I emailed them and said there should not be a gender identity question instead of asking someone's sex. They said it was an oversight. So do keep complaining when they ask it. People do listen.

Puffincino · 05/12/2019 06:40

The Royal Horticultural Society wanted my gender on a membership survey yesterday. They got a firm 'other ' and a mini lecture in the text box. Am sure the RHS membership skews middle aged and upwards: what are they thinking?

SavoyCabbage · 05/12/2019 06:57

On a form for an activity dd was doing. I emailed and questioned why they wanted to know they were all over me like a rash as they assumed I dd was transsexual.

It would be fine, apparently and dd should not feel that she couldn't partake because of her gender identity and they would take steps to make sure she was comfortable and included.

When I replied that she was born a female and identified as a female they didn't respond.

aHintOfPercy · 05/12/2019 07:05

I just did online check-in for an Ryanair flight. Gender: male or female were the only choices and required to tick one to proceed with the check-in. Really annoying. I regularly lecture people on the difference between sex and gender - even DH who's a medic ffs.

TheWildPlaces · 05/12/2019 07:13

When I applied for my current job a few months ago I had to choose whether I "identify as male or female" from a drop down list. No other options. I really needed the job so didn't say anything about it but will do if anything similar comes up again. This is a nationwide, well known retail chain.

LaurieFairyCake · 05/12/2019 07:22

I had my flu jab in a pharmacy. There was no 'sex' box - just 'gender'

I scrubbed out gender and wrote sex and ticked the female box

EverardDigby · 05/12/2019 07:40

Local authority consultation about sexual and domestic violence services, asked two questions that were mentioned up thread about gender identity and was I the same gender I was assigned at birth? They are unanswerable if you don't believe in gender identity. Where have these questions come from? Assuming Stonewall, but they're not an expert on women, it's infuriating that you can't even say you're female on a survey about something that predominantly affects people born female.

BadgertheBodger · 05/12/2019 07:45

I’m applying for jobs at the moment and it is everywhere. Completely unavoidable. Equality and diversity monitoring forms, over and over, asking what gender I am, gender: male/female/other, do you identify as ....

My favourite one was the dentist. We registered as a family recently and the forms said gender, the receptionist wouldn’t even look at me when I handed all forms back with gender crossed out and SEX written above it.

It is making me extremely cross!! They’re also supposedly anonymous but I haven’t dared tick or say anything untoward in case it affects my application. Gah.

Passionaria · 05/12/2019 07:50

The Senior Railcard application asked for my gender. I crossed that out, wrote in 'sex' and indicated that I am a female. Not a word from the chap at the ticket office who processed the application.

HandsOffMyRights · 05/12/2019 07:52

It's everywhere isn't it?

When I can, I will change the meaningless 'gender' to 'sex' with a brief explanation.

But some of the electronic forms don't give you an option.

ItsChristmaaaaaaaaas · 05/12/2019 07:52

If asked I explain the situation. If it’s a rick box I explain at the first free text box (if online). I also ask the relevance of the question and offer my height, eye and hair colour in case that helps.
