I thought you needed a GRC to change the sex recorded on a passport

But apparently you just need a letter from your GP...?:

No. My niece was abl to change sex on her passport before starting testosterone.

PassingIntoTheWest · 28/11/2019 08:07

I'm baffled. Isn't this just self-ID? Which, you know, hasn't been introduced.

There isn’t any point in having it then is you can just change it? It’s meaningless.

FemaleAndLearning · 28/11/2019 08:13

Thanks for sharing my understanding was that you needed a GRC too not just a doctors letter. Also the change of gender 'is likely to be permanent' , I thought it had to be a oermenant change The language in the document is really awful, birth gender, acquired gender. My passport says sex on it not birth gender. So fed up of this stuff.

RealityNotEssentialism · 28/11/2019 08:13

You don’t need it for drivers license either. It is self-ID and makes obtaining a GRC almost completely pointless. I guess the only thing you need a GRC for is to get a new birth certificate.

PassingIntoTheWest · 28/11/2019 08:14

I couldn't see a publication date or version no. or anything like that on the document. At first, I assumed that it was new, and wondered whether the timing was slightly odd.

That’s insane! That’s an identity document 😱

Sexnotgender · 28/11/2019 08:15

And when I say identity I don’t mean the feelings in your head.

Who the fuck thought that was a good idea?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 28/11/2019 08:18

So if you go to a country where such things are just not recognised in any sense they you are stuffed if you need documentation to prove who you are.

NonnyMouse1337 · 28/11/2019 08:24

Trans privilege activists keep bleating about how the current system is soooooo onerous and difficult and that's why it needs to be changed to make everything easier for trans people.

If you only need a GP letter to change the sex on your passport, then what the fuck are they whinging about? What purpose does a GRC actually serve?

And to think at one point I actually believed all the misinformation peddled about by these lobby groups....

NonnyMouse1337 · 28/11/2019 08:26

I guess the only thing you need a GRC for is to get a new birth certificate.

Which is baffling because how many times do you need to use your birth certificate?!
Your passport and driving license should suffice for most situations.

Reallybadidea · 28/11/2019 08:27

I want to change back to my birth name on my passport and that appears to be harder than changing sex 🤦‍♀️

RealityNotEssentialism · 28/11/2019 08:29

Nonny yes which is why only a tiny fraction of trans people bother getting a GRC

PassingIntoTheWest · 28/11/2019 08:33

Was this the point of it all then? Distract everyone with talk of self-ID and GRCs, then to just do it via the back door anyway? Passports and driving licences 🧐.

Grin SexnotGender that gave me a grim laugh!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 28/11/2019 08:36

But then they can’t wave their passport in your face in a daily basis to prove their status.

FamilyOfAliens · 28/11/2019 08:43

I asked about this when I renewed my passport.

The online form asks for gender, not sex. So I called the passport office and asked if a could leave it blank as I don’t have a gender. They said no, you have to complete the whole form, but in any case, it doesn’t matter because they convert what you put as your gender to sex on the actual passport. So someone who ticks female for the gender question gets sent a passport with F as the sex.

When I said but this is a document that is used to identify you their answer was that it still is. It’s not a document to verify what sex you are, just that you are the person on the passport.

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 28/11/2019 08:53

I think it's allowed because it's part of the proof that the person is "living as a woman/man".

To obtain a grc, someone has to show commitment to the role therefore let employers and family know, and change id where possible.

As far as I can see, its supposed to be a means to obtaining a grc, not an end in itself. So I'd question why someone would change their passport and driving licence, but make no steps to obtain a grc.

RealityNotEssentialism · 28/11/2019 08:54

I am actually moving more in favour of not having sex on ID documents. Yes, there needs to be a record of sex somewhere official but why does it need to be on my passport or drivers license. I am female because I am female, not because it says so on my passport. The fact that you don’t need to be female for it to say female just shows how meaningless it is. The passport is just there so that immigration authorities know that I am who I say I am and for that I don’t see why they need to know my sex. There’s a photo of me on there and it uses iris recognition software. Doesn’t also need M or F, especially as they could now mean a member of either sex.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 28/11/2019 08:55

LM put up a photo of LM's passport a while back showing F. LM did not at that stage have a GRC or the whole world would have known about it.

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 28/11/2019 08:56

It’s not a document to verify what sex you are, just that you are the person on the passport.

Exactly, the fact that the sex marker can be changed without a birth certificate, original or amended with grc, proves this.

TRA like to claim otherwise.

FamilyOfAliens · 28/11/2019 08:56

Except LM did at one point say LM had a GRC. But that never got mentioned again, along with several other interesting claims.

NotBadConsidering · 28/11/2019 08:56

GRCs are pointless anyway. No one can define what committing to “living your life as a man/woman” means, and so no one can be held accountable to such a definition and the panel aren’t going to pursue you. Exhibit A: Freddie McConnell getting pregnant within weeks of committing legally to “live as a man”.

NonnyMouse1337 · 28/11/2019 08:57

So why have sex at all on passports if it's completely unnecessary to confirming the person is who they say they are?

RealityNotEssentialism · 28/11/2019 09:05

Nonny I think it’s something that has always been done so we haven’t questioned why we still do it. And I guess in the days before passport photos, it would be used to show who you were (age, sex etc). I can’t see any need for it now.

Pretty certain LM doesn’t have a GRC but that LM does have a very liberal relationship with the truth and a very loose grip on reality.
