He is not underage, so what are they hiding?

That's so weird, why won't they name him?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 22/11/2019 10:07

It’s just a process I’m pretty sure. The name was suppressed by a court process at the behest of the judge to ensure a fair trial. It will have to be lifted by another court process, then he will be named in the NZ press.

AgnesNaismith · 22/11/2019 10:08

Allegedly an athlete of national treasure status

Dylanpickle · 22/11/2019 10:11

I understand it may be due to other ongoing investigations which they don't wish to influence/risk with disclosing his identity.

HandsOffMyRights · 22/11/2019 10:12

I want to know this too.
When is he back in court for sentencing?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 22/11/2019 10:15

Also it’s worth noting that the suppression is only enforceable in NZ but many external media agencies of other countries have decided to comply because the NZ justice minister asked that they do so to help ensure a fair trial and justice for the Millane family.

He’s either known in the public eye or other women will come forward who have also been his victim but were lucky enough not to be killed by him.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 22/11/2019 10:16

Sentence due in February 2020.

Whatdidisay · 22/11/2019 10:26

I googled and found his name easily, doesn't seem to be anyone famous. Apparently anyone in NZ can apply to be anonymous.

PanemEtCircenses · 22/11/2019 10:26

His name is all over Twitter. Reporting restrictions only apply in NZL but I guess we shouldn’t repeat it on here just in case.

MorrisZapp · 22/11/2019 10:29

It's frustrating but if it ensures a fair trial then it's necessary. The trial collapsing over a technicality would be a horrific outcome.

Breathlessness · 22/11/2019 10:31

A suppression order was first refused and then granted before the trial. It hasn’t been stated but I think it was because of the level of media interest. I’d bet his lawyer asked for it because he has a ’history of telling exaggerated stories and lies – including that he had cancer, was a professional athlete, and worked as an “oil manager” off-shore.’ [Guardian] that would have undermined his shitty defence.

The articles from before the order was put in place are still out there as are lots of tweets naming him. I wouldn’t risk getting MN into trouble by naming him on here.

Backinthecloset123 · 22/11/2019 10:33

It has a strange history here in NZ. His name will become pubic shortly.

Breathlessness · 22/11/2019 10:49

That’s really interesting.

hardyloveit · 22/11/2019 11:31

His name is all over google. As is his photo! The independent named him last year I believe.
He doesn't "look like a murderer" as such. In the photos over google, he looks like a young well groomed man. It's scary - never judge a book and all that. He looks normal but how wrong is that! His name will be released in NZ eventually

koshkat · 22/11/2019 11:46

His name and pic are common knowledge. I cannot believe that he was given such a short sentence.

My heart breaks for Grace and her family.

Verite1 · 22/11/2019 12:37

Koshkat - he hasn’t been sentenced yet. That takes place in February

mynamenomore · 22/11/2019 12:47

Just seen this linked on Twitter metro.co.uk/2019/11/22/grace-millanes-killer-unmasked-creepy-fantasist-failed-salesman-11201228/

CareOfPunts · 22/11/2019 12:50

It’s disgraceful. Her sexual life and preferences are splashed all around the world and he gets “protected”. Now he’s been convicted, he should be named. If he needs to be anonymous for future proceedings, then that can occur then.

Even if he’d been found not guilty he should have been named. At best he was clearly a highly dangerous man who risked women’s lives during sex and killed one, even (as he pathetically claimed) “accidentally”.

MummytoCSJH · 22/11/2019 13:30

I was wondering this when I first heard about the case. After googling I found his name and picture easily, even found his fb profile from the details. Not famous. Still not entirely sure why he is 'anonymous'.

koshkat · 22/11/2019 13:33

Sorry Verite! I had just read that he had got only 10 years! Have no idea where that came from. Apololgies for any confusion caused.

Usernumbers1234 · 22/11/2019 13:35

@AgnesNaismith

Nope. And he’s been named in the UK press.

It’s just a quirk of the system there, nothing preventing international press from releasing it.

No cover up going on here. Just standard legal process in that system.

paap1975 · 22/11/2019 13:38

It's so as not to prejudice other legal action against him. Releasing his identity can give him grounds to claim he didn't get a fair trial
