Did Nazir actually say this:

"There's a significant difference between a hate incident and a hate crime, in the same way that reporting a burglary is not the same thing as a burglary itself"

That makes no sense.

Cocolapew · 20/11/2019 10:13

Good luck Harry!

AutumnCrow · 20/11/2019 10:20

Good luck Harry

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 20/11/2019 10:23

Good luck Harry.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 20/11/2019 10:36

It's started.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 20/11/2019 10:37

And it's a full house apparently.

FloralBunting · 20/11/2019 10:37

He compared a hate incident to reporting a burglary, and a hate crime to the burglary itself? I'm usually quite good at analogies, but I can't get to where that makes any sense at all.

I mean, it sounds like that would mean reporting a burglary was an aggravating terrible thing that should be discouraged, lest it lead on to an escalation... of reporting a murder, perhaps?

Odd.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 20/11/2019 10:41

So a "hate incident" is like reporting a burglary? Is reporting a burglary a bad thing then? It's arguably a pointless thing at the moment with the police spending most of their limited resources on questioning people about Twitter comments...

Michelleoftheresistance · 20/11/2019 10:45

Good luck Harry.

People's lives cannot be affected, by the police of this country, simply by someone picking up the phone and making a wholly unsubstantiated, unevidenced accusation of something that does not even break the law .

I'd say that way madness lies, but the madness is right here, happening and it's an appalling fact that it has been allowed. Along with multiple other appalling things on government watch in the last five years. Muppets.

nauticant · 20/11/2019 10:47

It was Nazir Afzal not being on top of the issue he was there to discuss and coming out with something to sound intelligent. It was effectively misdirection.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 20/11/2019 10:47

Yeh, makes no sense at all. If you report a burglary, you are reporting an ACTUAL CRIME that has already been committed.

A hate incident is a non crime that they are presuming might escalate. Bollocks. Minority report.

No wonder people are afraid to speak out. Imagine being recorded for a "hate incident" for liking a tweet etc. So sinister.

God I hope this goes our way.

WAFC are live tweeting here: twitter.com/wearefaircop/status/1197097643622699008?s=21

Judge seems fully aware, he’s commented about the cancelled event at Oxford Brookes.

teawamutu · 20/11/2019 10:59

Do we know how long the case is meant to last, and when the judgment would be delivered?

StoatofDisarray · 20/11/2019 10:59

Can I ask a stupid question? If it's possible to commit a hate crime even when there's no victim with a limerick, doesn't that mean that all the "Die in a fire" and other nasty tweets about GC women in general are also hate crimes when they're not directed at anyone in particular?

Is the public gallery full, BTW?

nauticant · 20/11/2019 11:00

The judge is thinking properly about this:

mobile.twitter.com/WeAreFairCop/status/1197106801629634566

Judge - but how can it be a hate incident if no hate established - Counsel. That is our point. It is plainly disproportionate. Judge - does it mean that someone reads someone. Reasonable reader wouldn't see it as hostile. But someone does and reports it. Should it be recorded?

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 20/11/2019 11:02

I looks like the Judge immediately understands the problem.

nauticant · 20/11/2019 11:03

Yes:

mobile.twitter.com/WeAreFairCop/status/1197107239741472768

Judge repeats this. So even if no objective evidence of hate, if a subjective report received it must be reported - Counsel - these are the plain words of the policy. Judge - I will have to hear from the police about this. #FairCopJR

PurpleHoodie · 20/11/2019 11:05

Good luck.

teawamutu · 20/11/2019 11:05

Judge is pretty young - 50 at most.

Datun · 20/11/2019 11:05

I do hope that the judge can say that taking the piss out of something is not evidence of hate.

If it was, I'd hate almost all my friends and certainly my family, and very definitely DH.

CaveMum · 20/11/2019 11:05

Stoat yes WAFC tweeted to say the gallery was full.
