So write and tell them. Or tweet them...

GiveMeABreakAlready · 22/11/2019 10:16

I am closing my John Lewis credit card account. I buy all of my food shopping with it and also used it for big purchases such as furniture from John Lewis. Would have done a lot of my Christmas shopping with John Lewis but I will be going entirely elsewhere.

I feel like my actions are pointless though as I can’t see there being that many people that will stop shopping with them- I suspect that many people will be either unaware of this policy or aren’t that bothered by it. This, combined with reading the political manifestos littered with anti-women policies, is making me feel SO despondent. I just feel like this war on women is unwinnable. I see so many of our rights slipping away and I feel powerless to do anything to stop it. It’s like constantly swimming against a very strong tide.

SirVixofVixHall · 22/11/2019 11:25

I feel so despondent too. I have daughters of 12 and 14, which makes me even more sad about the future.
It does feel like a war on women.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 22/11/2019 11:42

It’s never gone away I fear.

catsnoozing · 22/11/2019 13:44

fauconberg and DrinkFeckArseGirls, that's Ed Davey's constituency isn't it?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/11/2019 10:28

So the customer person has at replied to my email. I wasn’t holding my breath to be honest but I hope ‘she’ (I suspect they go into a pot of emails and are distributed over the team to respond to with a generic name) at least read it.

I was adding up how much I spend in there - weekly shopping, washing machine, dishwasher, tv, all DS baby items (pram, cotbed, clothes etc).

We were going to use them to blitz the living room as it needs starting from scratch and all new furniture and light fittings - that won’t be cheap but it needs doing.

Go well JK, Go Well..

ChangingRoomChallenge · 25/11/2019 15:43

Test

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 25/11/2019 15:44

Go on then...

Sexnotgender · 25/11/2019 15:54

I needed to buy a new car seat for my son, John Lewis were the cheapest.

I bought elsewhere, they clearly don’t want my money so I’m happy to spend a bit more somewhere else.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 25/11/2019 15:56

Just watched a couple of women accompany their other half’s into the changing room in the men’s section in JL... didn’t look like trouble makers... so if I go to the ladies section can I assume it will be make partners accompanying their other halves to make sure their clothes fit nicely?

Are JL really that naive? Also spotted a lot of bra fitting service posters. Can a member of staff really refuse to service a customer if they feel uncomfortable? Can JL date refuse a staff member the job if they would potentially make customers feel uncomfortable?

ChangingRoomChallenge · 25/11/2019 15:56

Well this is a decision and a half, so I am throwing it upon for opinions. Obviously I've NCed and don't want to give out any identifying info but I am a FWR regular

Well, DH has just been offered a job with John Lewis HmmHe applied for it ages ago and I think with Christmas coming up they are recruiting again.

Now DH is an ally and has peaked lots of colleagues at his current workplace Wink He is currently in employment so although JL would be a good job, principles and all...Our first thoughts are what would MN say....

Sexnotgender · 25/11/2019 15:57

£200 went to an independent retailer rather than JL, win win!

When did car seats get so expensive Confused

ChangingRoomChallenge · 25/11/2019 15:57

Sorry fekko I got distracted BlushGrin

ChangingRoomChallenge · 25/11/2019 16:04

My first thought is turn it down and tell them exactly why - not that they'll really give that much of a fuck about losing DH Grinespecially when they don't give a fuck about alienating their female customers and losing shitloads of business from them....

Velveteenfruitbowl · 25/11/2019 16:07

They really don’t know their customer base do they?

littlecabbage · 25/11/2019 16:29

ChangingRoomChallenge

Is there any chance of him influencing policy in said position?

ChangingRoomChallenge · 25/11/2019 16:48

I doubt it, it's definitely not CEO level Grin A friend of mine worked at Waitrose though abs said there was lots of opportunity for staff to give feedback etc, though I'm cynical and think a lot of that is lip service.

The problem though is that you probably are just asking for your P45 with GC views...

littlecabbage · 25/11/2019 17:32

Hmmm, I guess it depends then what his chances are of getting a job that he would enjoy as much and would give similar benefits. If good, then I would be tempted to turn it down and tell them why. His voice on its own won't turn the tide, but the more voices they hear, the better.

But if it is his dream job and he isn't likely to be offered it elsewhere, I would probably say to take it.

MrsSnippyPants · 25/11/2019 17:56

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles
Does anyone think if everyone with concerns clubbed together to sign a letter (like the Louise Moody one recently and I'm sure lots of others) to John Lewis with so many signatories on it, it would have an impact? A huge amount of customers saying they are withdrawing their business.

I would be up for doing something like this; any other takers?

littlecabbage · 25/11/2019 18:05

I would sign it. I would suggest targeting M&S first though rather than JL? Simply because I get the impression from these threads that most women are focussing their boycott there first and foremost.

ChangingRoomChallenge · 25/11/2019 18:14

There are certainly enough articulate women here to get a great letter together!

DH is still undecided re the job. I think on balance it would be worse to take the job and then get sacked for expressing an opinion (which is a high probability let's face it, although of course we are crossing our fingers and toes for Maya here!) DH isn't the type to keep quiet and it's an industry that does black list. He also needs a clean DBS so can't be doing any leafleting or stickering that people might object to Wink I'm a fan of a bit of direct ninja type action myself

Hey ho. We will see. The money would be nice. Principles are expensive aren't they...

Noflora · 27/11/2019 16:18

I am so disappointed in JL, I've spent 10s of thousands there over the last 10 years, not clothes though. Wondering whether I can really boycott them as well as all the others I already do.

But their advert is all about inter species self ID and the terrified townspeople being guilted into ignoring their common sense and putting themselves at risk. So fuck em

littlecabbage · 27/11/2019 16:29

That's the spirit Noflora!

Akire · 27/11/2019 16:35

You are right about the dragon, how ironic! It’s hard when you are used to just having your go to shops, I’ve resisted Marks and got some supermarket bras but I imagine my budget is only a tiny part of what you are spending. I think once you get out of your comfort zone and try it is easier, but does take some effort and risk in trying new places.
