Lib Dems say reforming Gender Recognition Act ‘can’t wait’ and is a manifesto priority

I suppose this is the next step on from saying they dont want the votes or support of gender critical women.

The source for this story is Pink News, but presumably even they wouldn't quote somebody they hadn't actually spoken to. Or is this just devious electioneering, saying something to one audience to win their vote, but never talk about it elsewhere.

^“This government has, by its own admission, kicked these vital changes to the Gender Recognition Act into the long grass. This is prolonging uncertainty and creating unnecessary anxiety for trans people at a time when transphobic hate crime is at a record high,” said Christine Jardine, Liberal Democrat shadow minister for women and equalities.

“The Conservatives’ inaction on this shows a fundamental lack of empathy. They are treating trans people as second-class citizens. The Liberal Democrats will build a brighter future where every person’s rights are respected, including expression of their gender identity,” Jardine said.^

Do people not have a right to express their gender identity now?

Michelleoftheresistance · 13/11/2019 19:50

Where every male person's rights are respected. Let's be honest about this. The Lib Dems have no interest whatsoever in respecting the rights of female born people.

Makes me still more afraid of them ending up in a coalition.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/11/2019 19:50

This should be seen by everyone voting next month.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 13/11/2019 19:51

Surely before anyone does any reforming the views collected from the consultation need publishing?

FeckTheMagicDragon · 13/11/2019 19:53

‘S OK. If they get enough votes to get into bed with the Torys, they’ll sell them out.

Just like they did with the students.

I’m still politically homeless, and at a loss over why these parties are not trying to woo the 51% of the population, instead of the 1%.

Final nail in the Lib Dem coffin for me Confused

Michelleoftheresistance · 13/11/2019 20:12

Its getting into bed with the Greens and Magic Grandad that I'm worried about…..

fridgegrazer · 13/11/2019 20:20

Oh God - I simply can't vote for anyone. What on earth am I going to do?

hoopdaloo · 13/11/2019 20:22

I have never voted for anyone other than Lib Dems.

I feel so fucking let down.

TinselAngel · 13/11/2019 20:23

Are votes from trans activists ten times more powerful than women's votes or something, and nobody told us?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/11/2019 20:25

Nah I don’t believe so. Has anyone told them?

EverardDigby · 13/11/2019 20:26

I’m really looking forward to the LibDems knocking on my door....

ArialAnna · 13/11/2019 20:30

There have been so many threads on MN about the Lib Dems being anti gender critical, I'm beginning to get suspicious that they are being posted by Tory trolls... in fact is that you Boris?

Regardless of the views of some of their members, I can't really see trans rights legistation being a priority for them. Surely it comes way down below stopping brexit, healthcare, crime, reforming the electoral system, climate change, child poverty, and practically every other issue? Boris and Corbyn both terrify me, so I wish you'd stop putting people off voting lib dem.

*puts on hard hat and awaits onslaught...

Arella · 13/11/2019 20:31

They knocked on my door - but they approached me by name and I work in a public-facing role, so I just said I was not voting for them. I wish I had the courage to say why to see what the canvasser said, but I did not feel anonymous enough.

TinselAngel · 13/11/2019 20:32

Do you think I'm a Tory troll?

Fucking hell, if I only came to MN to troll for the Tories I've been playing a bloody long game.

tilder · 13/11/2019 20:36

I will be seeing a prominent lib dem MP in 2 weeks time. Will ask if, in their view, somebody GC is welcome in their party.

TinselAngel · 13/11/2019 20:37

Can you ask them about the spousal "veto", tilder?

SanFranBear · 13/11/2019 20:43

ArialAnna - for me, this is the hill I am willing to die on. Like hoopdaloo upthread, I have never voted for anyone other than Lib Dem my entire voting life and I am comfortably into my 40s now - this includes every type of election, national and local, and was a member until earlier this year. However, any political party who is so blind to the impact of Self ID on women, is not a party that I want to vote for. You're right, there are more important things they should be focussing on but let a face it, should they get anywhere close to power again (and I really don't think they will), it will be as a coalition again. I can absolutely see a ruling party saying to the LD's that they can focus on areas such as the GRA as they won't want them meddling with their Brexit plans.

There are other choices than Blue or Red, I completely agree. But if you're voting based on their policies and support for women - as I am - then Yellow is just as shit a choice. I can see me spoiling my ballot again as there is no party who represents me anymore!

Dangerfloof · 13/11/2019 20:46

@ArialAnna

But if self Id goes full steam ahead, I won't exist, so I wont matter, neither will any woman; adult human female. I cant vote for any party that will shoo in self Id.
All the other important stuff means nothing if half the population dont count.

HumberHellraiser · 13/11/2019 20:49

That’s right, because quoting the actual words of LibDems from their own mouths is trolling them. Actual quotes, from the horses mouth, and excepts from their published priorities.

Really?

Uncompromisingwoman · 13/11/2019 20:50

Another one on the same hill. The Lib Dems have an outrageous attitude to GC women. Their LGBT twitter account has been a cesspit of misogyny and hatred - I suspect it's being more closely monitored at the moment but the screen shots are available everywhere. I left the party because of their attitude to this and their complete lack of concern for the safeguarding of children.
They are a disgrace to democracy - and all this is clearly evidenced by their own words - no Tory trolls are necessary. They show what they think of women's sex based rights and child safety every time they open their mouths.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 13/11/2019 20:54

More women die, week in, week out, by male violence in your constituency than trans women, Christine Jardine.

Yours
a constituent who would have voted Lib Dem, but, who now won't because the party does not care about women. And, I'm not sure you do, either.

ArialAnna · 13/11/2019 21:06

But trans people make up an estimated 0.2% - 0.5% of the population. And that includes trans men. Is it
really worth dying on that hill? I just don't get it. I'm sympathetic to some of the issues raised. For example I definitely don't think trans women should compete in sports events as women. But I don't get how such a small number of people identifying as different gender affects me self defining as a women. I don't understand how is it more important that brexit or climate change.

Also I think by making such a big deal of it we give the trans movement more publicity and make legal changes more likely to happen. It's like those situations when a small number of far right neo nazis march, and a much larger number of well meaning but ultimately misguided people form a counter march. It just draws attention and publicity to it and makes those on the far right think it's worth doing, whereas if they just let those 15 far right folk walk down the street while everyone got on with their shopping and normal lives around them, they'd feel very silly...
