Thank you, Jenni.

I commented - an innocuous comment. It’s still pending.

Uncompromisingwoman · 13/11/2019 22:57

I don't think the mod system works over night. And when they do start the comments roll up in a strange order with ones just made going up first followed by ones from 8 - 12 hours ago. Having said that, unlike the Guardian, they allow wide ranging comments - there can be some superb and informative comments on there (eyes FWR speculatively...)

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 13/11/2019 23:07

It's about time someone was that honest in the media. I have very little faith in any of the political parties responding appropriately.

Igneococcus · 14/11/2019 06:01

I think the Times moderators start working around 9 am. Florence's comment has 486 likes now.

Arella · 14/11/2019 07:22

I commented. It has disappeared into the ether.

Great article though still, this morning, only one comment.

Those of you planning to take out a subscription, please do take the time to tell them that you are doing so in part because of their excellent reporting of these issues, if you feel you can.

I read Jenni’s article in the Times 12 hours ago. I agreed with it wholeheartedly and posted a comment in support. Twelve hours later and only one comment has been posted in response to this article. That comment, by Florence, has received over 550 recommendations which is extraordinary in itself. My own comment in support of Jenni has been “pending approval” for hours. I am concerned that the Times is censoring readers who write in support of this article and in support of the protection of women’s rights. By refusing to show the true level of support that Jenni has received for this article (as shown on the Mumsnet website) the Times is pandering to the trans gender activist lobby and failing to publish the full and honest response that many women feel about this issue. This is a disgrace and shows very clearly the power that the trans gender activists wield. As women who agree with Jenni we are being silenced: this in itself is another perfect example of women’s rights being over ridden by organisations that are too scared to take on the trans gender activists. Where will it stop?

Igneococcus · 14/11/2019 07:48

Comments will eventually appear. I have seen this happening many times. If they publish an article that late in the day they won't let the comments show until mid morning the next day. At one point when I looked at it yesterday evening there were 14 people writing comments, at least I think that is what it means when there is a number rather than a letter in the round shape next to the three dots. There will be a lot of comments.

Uncompromisingwoman · 14/11/2019 07:53

A great article for printing out and giving to political canvassers - along with the Labour Women's Declaration. And sending it to any MPs currently seeking re election.

Indi0505 · 14/11/2019 07:53

I hope you are correct but I think this censoring is a deliberate policy by the Times to shut down commentary on these matters. They publish an article like this, and then take away the voices of the women who write in support of it. It only happens in articles relating to trans gender activism and it’s negative impact of women. I’ve been watching this for months and it disgusts me.

Smallblanket · 14/11/2019 07:53

Summarises my feelings entirely. Would have been good to cover the inherent homophobia and regressive stereotyping which has led to this point.

littlbrowndog · 14/11/2019 08:06

Great piece
This below sums it up for me

This crudity, this menace, is what self-ID is legitimising. The price of these men’s freedom is women’s fear.

Indi0505 · 14/11/2019 08:51

Hi Ineococcus, I don’t believe our comments will appear. I don’t believe the moderators start work at 9. The readers responses for the other journalists writing in today’s Comment section are being posted thick and fast. It is only responses to Jenni’s article that are failing to be passed on to the public.

Igneococcus · 14/11/2019 08:58

For some articles like this one they pre moderate, for others they don't. I have commented on many GC articles in the Times and sometimes they were pending for hours.

terryleather · 14/11/2019 09:07

That's a brilliant article, telling it exactly like it is .

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 14/11/2019 09:10

My guess is that there a lot of pending comments. Smile

The upvotes in the solitary comment are a useful barometer methinks.

Igneococcus · 14/11/2019 09:15

I hope Florence has turned her notifications for the likes of because that will flood her inbox.

BessyK · 14/11/2019 09:21

I've also watched as my 'recommendations'
for a comment are removed and then the comment is even downgraded by 1. This has happened many times.

RoyalCorgi · 14/11/2019 09:23

It could be that they are being inundated with hostile comments by TRAs and that is slowing them down - or they just think, Fuck it, I can't be bothered to deal with this and don't let any through.

midcenturylegs · 14/11/2019 09:28

I read that last night and was incredibly heartened. Sent it to an ex-colleague who posted the link to twitter - asking in a v neutral manner what people thought. It was her work account and she had an immediate response of "Fuc* that TERF noise". It really upset my friend (she deleted and blocked) as she'd never been subject to any hate on twitter before, her only contacts on her account are work accounts..

This morning I read this; thefederalist.com/2018/02/20/rich-white-men-institutionalizing-transgender-ideology/

I am so tired, how do you all keep on fighting?

Igneococcus · 14/11/2019 09:28

BessyK, I have "un-recommended" comments by accident before when I forgot that I already liked it (and sometimes it doesn't show). I usually notice it but maybe not always. I'm sure that happens to other people as well. I actually also have reported comments by accident but they seem to have fixed their scrolling problem and that doesn't happen now anymore.
The Times has been really supportive to GC voices so far, I'm still optimistic that they won't drop the ball now.

TulipsTulipsTulips · 14/11/2019 09:29

Fantastic article. Thank you The Times for keeping this discussion in the news.

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 14/11/2019 09:32

BessyK I haven't noticed that happening in normal circumstances, but I have noticed that if I accidentally recommend a comment which I already recommended earlier (especially if it's on a different device or if I went out of the article and then came back in later and forgot which comments I already liked), it will show briefly as recommended but then remove the recommendation and drop the number of "likes". So it basically takes it as removing the original recommendation. If I re-like it again after that (or like a comment I didn't already like) then it stays, though. Could that be what you're experiencing?

I am prepared to give the Times the benefit of the doubt on this, as they have been producing so many excellent GC articles and comments over a long period - commentators such as SilverLady usually have great contributions, and they are allowed to stand even if they would be considered very "controversial" by some other publications.

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 14/11/2019 09:33

X-post with Igneococcus!

Igneococcus · 14/11/2019 09:44

I just had some likes for two comments I made on related articles a few weeks ago which I think means that some readers are clicking on the related articles which is great that their attention is drawn to these.
