Labour women's declaration on sex-based rights

howonearthdidwegethere · 11/11/2019 22:29

There was the SNP Women's Pledge, launched at their conference last month, and now there is a Labour women's pledge with 300 founder signatories, including three MSPs.

Twitter account: twitter.com/LabWomenDec

Declaration can be signed here: www.ipetitions.com/petition/labour-womens-declaration

I've signed but I am pessimistic about how much effect it will have on Labour party policy, given that momentum control conference and they are ultra woke. Also given the fawning attitude of Cornyn, Butler, Millar etc towards those men who have self identified as women and taken posts such as womens officer, it will take a siesmic shift to get womens rights valued above those who self identify.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 12/11/2019 09:26

Do not be fooled. There is no way that will become official labour policy in any meaningful way.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 12/11/2019 09:30

Yes, while momentum are in charge the party is doomed

This will not become party policy

It’s still great though

Dljlr · 12/11/2019 09:32

Signed it, sceptical as others though. Who is anyone voting for please? I don't know what to do! The Lib Dems don't want me, and I don't want them with their drinking attitude towards my rights. I seriously think I have no one at all to vote for this election.

Rubidium · 12/11/2019 09:36

That's a lot of signatures from Tottenham CLP. Isn't that the CLP of the young woke bloke who denounced WPUK at this year's conference in Brighton? I'd love to be a fly on the wall at one of their meetings.

charlestonchaplin · 12/11/2019 09:42

This comes at a very convenient time for the Labour Party. Those on the ground know how discontented many women are with Labour, including former party members, so they launch this during the election campaign to convince us to stick with them. We’re talking about 300 party members with hardly any power. And I’m sure it won’t be long before a counter petition proclaiming transwomen are women and need to be included in any discussion about women is organised by other Labour Party members. When senior figures in the Labour Party recognise women’s sex-based rights, that will be the time to pay attention.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 12/11/2019 09:44

I've emailed my local CLP to see if they would sign up to it as an organisation, since they haven't actually selected a candidate for December yet Hmm

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 12/11/2019 09:56

Agree Joisanofthedales. It sounds promising but the treatment of women by Labour lately... I'd want to see what affect it has in party policy, see what JC says about it. I still don't think, unless there's a definite shift in the party, that I would vote for them though. The action of the lib dems has left me with no one to vote for Sad

ScrimshawTheSecond · 12/11/2019 10:05

Charleston, yes, I did think that. Very convenient timing.

Find a few willing to be sacrifical lambs so that you can pretend that you secretly care about women's rights, while the top brass say nothing that might actually jeopardise Eddie Izzard's support.

Hm.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 12/11/2019 10:18

It’s shocking that I can read such a sensible list of policy statements and know that my beloved Labour Party will not endorse them. In fact will view them as hate speech.

Oldstyle · 12/11/2019 10:32

821 signatures now...
I'm vaguely hopeful. This was/is a grassroots campaign by LP women who are still fighting from within, following the SNP lead. Labour might be already too far down the rabbit hole but it's cheering that the fight back is becoming more public. Please sign if you can.

Redshoeblueshoe · 12/11/2019 10:41

My female labour MP is woke, she even signed the stupid Fox and Owl letter.
She thinks women should just try harder.
I think it's a bit rich coming from someone who got her VERY VERY safe seat via an AWS

Igmum · 12/11/2019 11:13

Signed. Excellent petition

MrsBertBibby · 12/11/2019 11:18

Have a read of the listed original signatories, eh?

Agreed. It's all a little too late. They've shamed any woman speaking up for our sex based rights, condoned the harassment of the WPUK meeting, allowed men to take women's officer positions etc. The Labour Party in it's current form is no friend of women.

Oakmaiden · 12/11/2019 11:54

Hm. Just sent this to my local candidate.

Dear Sir,

I am finding it difficult to decide where to place my vote in the upcoming general election, as there are a small number of issues I feel very strongly about, and I have not yet found a party which I feel takes a moral, ethical and fair position on all of those issues. Since I am finding it hard to base my position along party lines, I have decided to delve more deeply into the voting and convictions of the particular party members who would be representing me.

I have been interested to note the recent publication of the Labour Women's Declaration www.ipetitions.com/petition/labour-womens-declaration regarding upholding women's sex based rights. I am aware that currently Labour's position is supportive of the gender recognition act and the right of trans people to self identify, and that this self identification should allow them access to the single sex facilities of their identified gender. I wondered if you would feel able to commit to supporting the call, made by the Labour Women's Group, to ensure that women's rights and freedoms are carefully considered and protected.

I feel I have to add that I of course support the right of any person to live and identify as any gender they wish, but feel it is important that a social gender choice is not confused with biological sex, and that the rights and safety of women and girls is considered when making changes to the laws of this country.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Regards,
Oak

Whilst I am extremely grateful for all the women in the Labour Party who are doing the thankless and Herculean task of trying to turn their sexist TRA Party tanker around, I'm waiting for the Labour Party manifesto to come out before I make up my mind whether I can support them. The 2017 manifesto was a TRA Charter. I want to see MASSIVE changes before I'll consider voting for them again. Hopefully this Declaration will impact on the 2019 Labour Party manifesto

Oakmaiden · 12/11/2019 12:00

Oh.

Parliament has now been dissolved until the General Election. Therefore there are currently no Members of Parliament. Incoming emails to this account may be received and read, however this email address is only being used to respond to urgent constituency case work.

Well, that is unhelpful.

teawamutu · 12/11/2019 12:00

Over 1,000 now.

Justhadathought · 12/11/2019 12:07

Does this mean the Labour policy will change? That would be incredible

Not immediately, I suspect. I don't really think that the issue has been given full and proper consideration in the first place. There has been no open debate or discussion, and the consequences of parroting TWAW have not really been considered.

But this is a start. And it is good that people have openly printed their their names and positions, where applicable.

ShonaAndTheWaterHorse · 12/11/2019 12:13

So if Labour roll back on self ID that makes it acceptable?

You will be happy with, for example, Corbyn's show of solidarity today with another South American Marxist?

Cwenthryth · 12/11/2019 12:22

Well this is very encouraging!

I’m in a Labour/Tory marginal, the new Labour PPC has been parachuted in from elsewhere though, I’m following her on Twitter but can’t find a way to email her to ask about this. Are people going via their CLP?

stillathing · 12/11/2019 12:27

OK so why all the funny names in the signatories? Is it being trolled by MRAs so as to discredit it? I guess it would stand to reason that if women are not allowed sex based rights they should also not be allowed to petition the Labour Party without interference from entitled men with mummy issues and their deluded handmaidens. Back in your boxes /the kitchen, women.

Oakmaiden · 12/11/2019 12:28

Yes they are trolling it. They hate it whenever we have anything for ourselves. Just look at how they targeted the LGB Alliance. They always show their true colours.
