I've just told LibDem canvasser to sling it!

I've just told a Lib Dem canvasser to stay away from my home as I will never vote for a party that undermines women's rights. He tried to ignore me as he swerved to get off my path so I shouted after him if he agreed with Jo Swinson that women could have penises!

He muttered that I was anti-democratic, which is a bit rich considering they want to ignore the referendum completely.

I'm now cringing... Blush

Neighbour's probably think I'm mad! Grin

Who literally gives a shit what some uninformed people voted for 3.5 years ago?

Spoken like a true dictator.

BovaryX · 11/11/2019 15:52

Lucas, quite so. Also this thread is not about Brexit and its derailment would be unfortunate

Birdsfoottrefoil · 11/11/2019 15:55

I wonder if Nicola Sturgeon would be campaigning for a second Scottish Independence referendum if it had come back ‘yes’ the first time round? 🤔

You know - just to make sure we still think the same way?

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 11/11/2019 15:56

Well, bet that poster feels suitably told now lol.
Sorry, but are you the Thread Police?!
Maybe that poster wants to tell Lib Dem to sling their hook too but because of Brexit which is up to them.

Antibles · 11/11/2019 15:56

This thread has reminded me I must get a polite question on this ready for any door-knockers. Thank you maeb.

Aposterhasnoname · 11/11/2019 15:56

Who literally gives a shit what some uninformed people voted for 3.5 years ago?

This is the attitude that’s changed me from a hardened remainer to a leave sympathiser.

Cobblersandhogwash · 11/11/2019 15:57

Nothing democratic about the 2016 referendum. It was riddled with fraud and lies.

DialsMavis · 11/11/2019 15:58

I've asked out local Labour Party to give me contact details for the (new) candidate so I can ask about the GRA and women's rights but haven't had a response. They were canvassing in town on Saturday so I asked then about various issues and they were all so condescending and clearly thought I was some stupid, bigoted old homophobe. They spoke over me and even my 8 year old asked me why they were so rude.

However our current Tory M.P replied via post to my email with a long and well thought out response (probably just palming me off, but at some effort on his part). He also said he would be more than happy to discuss the issues I raised with me further.

Such a stark difference in approach. I couldn't actually vote Conservative but it really is a shame that I probably can't vote for anyone else either.

lucasthecat · 11/11/2019 16:01

Sorry - you are right this thread is not about - Brexit - it’s about political parties and organisations - ignoring people’s genuinely held beliefs and concerns - shutting down debate - by using emotive language - dismissing anyone who has a different view as a bigot or thick or old - absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with Brexit Grin

bengalcat · 11/11/2019 16:01

Well at least I now know what to say to any libdem who knocks on the door if I’m in

BovaryX · 11/11/2019 16:01

Er no, I am not the thread police but I think it’s unfortunate if the entire thread descends into a Brexit slanging match when it’s actually about the Lib Dem position on GC women

Mammajay · 11/11/2019 16:02

Perhaps the Russian involvement in trying to get UK to leave the EU and which was confirmed in the report the govt. Is refusing to release could mean the the advisory referendum needs confirmation. Given that the govt. would not allow a confirmatory referendum, the lib dems said ok, if we should get voted in, being the minority party, and stating clearly we would revoke article 50, that would effectively be a confirmatory vote. We don't have an open and honest democracy at the moment. Dominic Cummings and Seamus Milne hold far too much power. I hope the lib dems and other remain parties get enough seats to control the power of the Tories with Johnson and Cummings or corben and Seamus Milne.

maeb · 11/11/2019 16:03

My MP is Lib Dem. I wrote to him a while back about self-ID but he is a woo-believer and dismissed all of my concerns which oddly enough made me feel more like speaking out.

I'll have to curtain twitch to watch out for my next victim!

Lucas, if you take a look back at the thread you will see that I posted well said to you on your original reply....

BlooperReel · 11/11/2019 16:06

I had a Lib Dem canvasser at my door last week too, I told him I would listen to his spiel if he could answer me one question - What is it that makes a transwoman a woman.....Reader, I did not get an answer.

GrammarTeacher · 11/11/2019 16:07

Why such delight in being horrible to a canvasser? This is why people are being put off this board. It isn't reasoned debate it's taking delight at shouting at people. Nothing to be proud of there.

JellySlice · 11/11/2019 16:11

I told the LD canvasser that I wanted to vote LD and that I agreed with their position on Europe, but that I could not vote for them while they disenfranchised over half of the population and dismantled safeguarding for children and the vulnerable. The canvaser at first was "Um, no, I don't know what you're referring to." But by the end of our conversation it was clear that he knew exactly what I was referring to. And he was not comfortable. Whether because he thought I was the sort of woman who would be unwelcome in the LDs, or because he knew that the LD position on sex-based rights was unacceptable...I don't know. I hope the latter. Certainly he didn't defend it.

BovaryX · 11/11/2019 16:12

The OP hasn’t been horrible to a canvasser. She asked him about the Lib Dems position on women and was told she was ‘anti democratic.’ Shouldn’t political canvassers be asked to explain their political policies? What’s ‘horrible’ about that?

BovaryX · 11/11/2019 16:16

Jelly,
Interesting. I honestly wonder what someone like that who seems embarrassed about his party’s policies is doing trying to sell them to voters....

Birdsfoottrefoil · 11/11/2019 16:18

What is Putin’s position on TWAW?

Sorry just being facetious now...

WaningGibbous · 11/11/2019 16:21

I am on nodding terms with our Lib dems parliamentary candidate and saw him last week - I have stuff printed by the door at home if he ever comes round but I obviously need some in my bag as well to give him in the street. I would have voted for him but for this.

LangCleg · 11/11/2019 16:25

Who literally gives a shit what some uninformed people voted for 3.5 years ago?

There is as much wilful ignorance on the Remain side as the Leave side. And I voted Remain.

The EU does not protect poor/marginalised people - it is a neoliberal, capitalist organisation - as Tory austerity clearly shows. No genuinely left agenda can be implemented as members of the EU. Remain is better for middle class people than it is for poor working class people. Leave is likely to be shit for both. That, unfortunately, is the core of it.

HermioneWeasley · 11/11/2019 16:25

OP, that’s brilliant. I might just shout “penises” at anyone who comes to my door from now on

Puggled · 11/11/2019 16:29

I'll be on the lookout for any canvassers round my way. The lib dems seem totally out of touch with reality. They've been distributing leaflets misrepresenting opinion polls and claiming they are neck and neck with the tories in my constituency. They were actually well behind in third place last time round.

Exactly, I mean way to get people onside, Mrs Bloggs next door will probably be thinking "U OK hun?" if she randomly heard the tail end of your conversation and you shouting PENISES! at a hastily retreating canvasser...... Grin
