Lib Dems actively deterring GC women

Today I emailed the Lib Dems expressing an interest in joining their party.

I stated no one should receive discrimination or abuse for their transgender status but explained that I am GC and I asked if there was room for GC women in the party.

I received the following response:
Thank you for getting in touch. Whilst we appreciate your interest in joining, you should be aware that the Liberal Democrats are a trans inclusive party, and we have made it clear that we fully behind trans communities. As liberals we champion everyone’s right to live the life they want. By the sounds of your email it appears that your values are not aligned with ours so we are probably not the right the party for you.

I am flabbergasted. I didn't expect that I would have to believe that humans can change biological sex in order to be a member of the Lib Dems.

I am so disappointed. I was going to vote for them in the GE (passionate Remainer) but I cannot if this is their response.

There is no one to vote for. I am lost.

UKIPS manifesto states they will revoke The Equality Act and roll back women's rights.
All the other parties are doing exactly the same thing, but by stealth.

The Equality Act and the GRA are both clear; sex is a separate protected characteristic to gender reassignment, and with or without a GRC trans people do not automatically gain access to all of the adjustments that are made for women.

VortexofBloggery · 07/11/2019 17:29

Thanks for sharing OP. I had agonised over who to vote for, this now rules out the LibDems. I suspect the same email to all main parties would get the same response. Perhaps spoiling in protest is the only option for me. "Votes for Women" never needed more than now.

Siameasy · 07/11/2019 17:32

Im so fed up with the sound bites/buzz words and thought terminating clichés which are the only responses eg
Trans lives are not up for debate
Trans rights are human rights
Inclusivity etc etc
Whenever I hear one I go bananas
Someone at work was telling me “you can be whoever you wanna be”
I said what can I be Gary Glitter then?

Beamur · 07/11/2019 17:42

My DH has been dealing with his late Father's estate recently. Which has included cancelling his membership and generous monthly donation to the Lib Dems. I have to say it made me smile. Knowing my FIL he would have been appalled at this wilful ignoring of scientific fact. He'd been a card carrying member for many years.

MedusasButterDish · 07/11/2019 17:44

Remain deserves better than the Lib Dems. What a Mickey Mouse party.

DuMondeB · 07/11/2019 17:53

Trans communities? What strange phrasing. Sounds like the Lib Dems want trans people to live in gated off communes.

Dickheads.

I'm sure if you phrased the letter like this:

'I'm interested in overseas development and am most concerned about the lack of rights to women and girls in under developed countries. I'm particularly concerned about safety of young girls skipping schools because they feel unsafe using toilets, they endure period poverty, they are subject to FGM and breast ironing. Their sexuality is often 'cured' by rape, they hold very little economic power due to lack of contraception. Their rights to equality is eroded by dent of their sex. I would champion that these young girls and women be given an education in a safe and caring setting ensuring them the chance to become economically independent.'

To be honest, the above paragraph could equally apply to young girls and women in the UK today the way things are going.

The LibDems are clearly political opportunists who stand for fuck all of value. They've always done weathervane politics - tailoring their campaigns to whatever will get their sticky little hands near power. The brexit stance is another in a long line of this sort of stunt.
It doesn't surprise me that they are telling people not to vote for them - I'm not even a brexiteer by any stretch of the imagination, but given that they've essential told everyone who wanted to leave the EU not to vote for them, they seem quite committed to rejecting votes as a policy.

Omg eva

You poor thing Gin

AutumnRose1 · 07/11/2019 18:27

Thanks Inebriati

For some reason I thought the government had decided to give more time to the GRA and frankly I thought that meant they would abandon it and go for biological fact. I appreciate I might be out of date, I’m struggling to keep up.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 07/11/2019 18:29

Watching with interest

Like many people i use pronouns, dont have a major issue with transpeople, would always be ‘kind’, supportive of the right not to be discriminated against as a trans person etc

BUT

Obviously you can’t actually change sex, anyone who thinks that Born men should be in sports should really sit down and have a good think, womens awards should be for woman and ive no fucking idea what M&S are doing...

So do they want me to vote for them? Cos i can arrange not to...thats dead easy

TheBullshitGoesOn · 07/11/2019 18:32

Wow. I was considering voting LibDem because of Brexit. But after seeing that reply they can fuck off.

Smallblanket · 07/11/2019 18:32

Same here

Screamqueenz · 07/11/2019 18:33

I joined the party because of brexit, I need to let them know they should boot me out.
I am definitely not anti trans, in any way, but I am pro women.

popehilarious · 07/11/2019 18:34

Their email says they are a trans inclusive party. Trans and inclusive. Not trans-inclusive.

How offensive. Punctuation matters!

And they fully "behind" trans communities - I don't dare Google "behind" as a verb.

they also use "whilst" which is awful

AutumnRose1 · 07/11/2019 18:35

Was it the
Lib Dem’s or the Greens who defining representatives as non man or non woman etc?

Also, I wrote to the Greens three times last time about over population and got “um er...blah...other issues” so they can fuck off even on the basis they’re supposed to stand on!

Newuser123123 · 07/11/2019 18:41

I'm a party member. Think I'd rather get expelled than quit though.

Newuser123123 · 07/11/2019 18:46

Any other members, please pm me

Screamqueenz · 07/11/2019 18:58

I have messaged my local candidate, so I will see what response I get. I like the candidate very much, so hope I get a sensible response.

BeMoreMagdalen · 07/11/2019 18:59

Autumn, I think non man was the Greens.

OllyBJolly · 07/11/2019 19:03

So you can be a pure blue Tory and be welcomed with open arms to the Lib Dems. But if you refuse to believe being a woman is all about pink and glitter and feelz then you're not welcome?

I hope Jo Swinson loses her seat (not likely as it doesn't look as if the Conservatives are putting a candidate forward - some dodgy dealing going on there?)

NotAtMyAge · 07/11/2019 19:08

I have never voted anything other than Liberal/LibDem since the first GE in which I was eligible to vote. That was in 1970, when I was 24. The constituency where we've lived for over 40 years returned a Liberal/LibDem MP for almost a century until 2010, when it went Conservative. The LDs are still the only viable contender and I would truly love to see the Tories lose the seat. Now agonising over what to do... Sad

PermanentTemporary · 07/11/2019 19:16

I will give them that at least they were honest about it. I wouldnt trust the Boris Party to say anything except whatever you wanted to hear. Labour has gone further than any other party imo in eliminating any way of promoting the rights of women as a class.

When I think about this I think again that I MUST be wrong about this issue. I then try to imagine myself saying TWAW and I'm back to the beginning again.

MsF1t · 07/11/2019 19:26

Not the LibDems, but the Scottish Greens are using (we think) Terf Blocker or similar on Twitter. One of my circle of fiends noticed she'd been blocked- no interactions or alternative explanations she could think of. O can see them- but then I'm a very small fish on that particular sewer. Is this a thing now, too? Hoping they come to my door now so I can tell them how they lost my vote.

merrymouse · 07/11/2019 19:26

Are the politicians going to be invited to do web chats on MN?

Will Jo Swinson confirm that the local Lib Dem candidate is 'not for us' if we don't believe it's possible to change sex?
