This is good. Will be very useful to know about the LGB population, nice straightforward question. But hang on...

"National Records of Scotland revealed in a letter to MSPs they planned to expand the four basic categories initially proposed — straight or heterosexual, gay or lesbian, bisexual and other."

"The 21 “other” options for census respondents are mooted as androphilic, androsexual, asexual, bicurious, bisexual, demiromantic, demisexual, fluid, gay, gynephilic, gynesexual, homosexual, heterosexual, lesbian, pansexual, polysexual, queer, questioning, skoliosexual, straight and unsure."

Sigh.

It sounds as if ScotGov had pointed out that perhaps they should collect sexual orientation as defined in law, but no, yet again unspecified stakeholders want to be ahead of the law.

I believe that along with the gender identity question is is voluntary.

Androphilia means attracted to men. It's different from androsexual though.

You'd need a dictionary to hand to be able to answer the question, so that will be easy enough HmmConfused

I'm guessing that there is also a hetero/homo/bisexual question but that these options are instead of a free text "other" box. Which is daft as everyone is one of the first three.

There are, therefore, only four possible sexualities. Opposite sex attracted. Same sex attracted. Both sex attracted. Neither sex attracted. One Two Three Four.

I know there are arts graduates, particularly in the media, who take a perverse delight in being shit at maths but this is primary school level arithmetic. Two times two is four.

And why is the NRS doing this when the parliamentary committee advised against it? Who are they accountable to? Why does made up bullshit get preference over Sikhs having their own category?!

As has been pointed out on twitter there are several duplicates in that list too - what is the difference between unsure and questioning, or between heterosexual and straight Hmm

It really needs a "fuck off" option imo

Good question. At the last census they didn't even have an atheist category despite 24% of the population being atheists according to the 2001 census.

And when I say atheist I'm not including the nones or agnostics, but one in four people aren't enough for their own category on the one hand, while one in several thousand must be pandered to on the other. It is nuts.
