Constituency Labour Party approves motion supporting women's rights and WPUK. Respectful of trans issues (though the lobby is claiming otherwise...) Vote was 46 to 29, so a clear majority.

I can't easily make links, but see Twitter.

Thank you, Hornsey and Wood Green!!

Bit of good news for us all.

@ApplejackCriesOnTheInside I haven't heard that Catherine West is noisily TWAW. If she was, she isn't now. Not absolutely certain where she sits but I believe she understands the GC arguments. I have spoken to her about this at her surgeries twice.
At the LP meeting where this motion was passed, the term 'sex based rights' was characterised by the opposition as being transphobic. I found that particularly irksome that even mention of sex based rights is a red flag to them.

ApplejackCriesOnTheInside · 26/10/2019 14:35

I'm glad she's prepared to engage, if that's your experience @RadicalStitch. Suspect where she sits is On The Fence Grin

teawamutu · 26/10/2019 14:41

I'm going to cc this resolution to my local Labour Party. If they pass it I might be able to see my way to voting Labour again.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 26/10/2019 14:45

That’s what we needed. We needed just ONE council to be brave enough to support women. Hopefully courage will be contagious.

I want to thank each and every woman and man who has been brave enough to speak out in support of women’s safety. Whether it’s online, at meetings, in work, chatting in the corner shop, mentioning a story/article to the post person. Even mentioning the attack on women’s safety, rights and dignity to ONE person, starts a trickle, that leads to people in power finding their courage.

RadicalStitch · 26/10/2019 14:46

@ApplejackCriesOnTheInside You're definitely right as far as her public presents is concerned, but personally I think she's on our side of the fence. Very frustrating. The entirety of the young labour group would leave if she came out.

@teawamutu send it to the woman's officer, or even better, all the branch women's officers. Lots won't be on board, but you only need one. Good luck.

RadicalStitch · 26/10/2019 14:47

Public presentation not presents!

RuffleCrow · 26/10/2019 14:48

Well done! great news Smile

teawamutu · 26/10/2019 14:51

Good shout, thanks Radical. Will report back.

Ooh I like this idea.

Chiochan · 26/10/2019 16:29

I dont think Catherine West is TWAW at all, though it could be a while before she says it publicly.
Also at the meeting it was clear the leader of the council is also GC. I was sat near him and watched who he clapped and, tellingly, who he diden't and it was obvious he does not buy this crap for a second.

Now all we need is for them to have the guts to actually come out and say it.

RadicalStitch · 26/10/2019 16:48

@Chiochan did you see how people voted? Can you DM me?

ApplejackCriesOnTheInside · 26/10/2019 17:09

Early Day Motion from 2017 - CW is a signatory though of course her views may have changed since.

TalkingintheDark · 26/10/2019 17:16

That is really encouraging. Well done Hornsey and Wood Green CLP!

YesIWorkForTheNHS · 26/10/2019 17:28

Complete aside... teawamutu you've just brought me up short. I always assumed you were in NZ!

Chiochan · 26/10/2019 17:34

@RadicalStitch Know how me and my mates voted Grin
I dont really want to get in to what anyone else did, even if I noticed which I probably diden't.
Great result though. I really hope other CLPs will take this motion up, and then maybe leadership might actually sit up and engage their brains. (we can hope)

ChattyLion · 26/10/2019 17:39

That EDM is daft- includes proposing bridging prescriptions from GPs before people get into specialist services Hmm

I see that only 37 MPs signed it and 2 of them have withdrawn so really not a great deal of MPs supporting it fortunately. Hopefully this particular MP has learnt a bit more about it all now and has changed her views...

Charley50 · 26/10/2019 17:57

I think Catherine West was quite TWAW last November, see image, part of her reply to me about the proposed changes to the GRA, but a lot has changed since then, so maybe she is more aware of the real issues.

Well done, Hornsey and Wood Green CLP!!
RadicalStitch · 26/10/2019 18:02

@Chiochan Was wondering how the chairs had voted, but just being nosy. Don't blame you. Smile

Charley50 · 26/10/2019 18:17

Actually even back then Catherine West was talking about the impact on women.

RadicalStitch · 26/10/2019 18:38

@Charley50 if that's the letter I think it is, it's a masterclass in fence sitting.

Charley50 · 26/10/2019 18:40

GrinRadical you're right. Did you get the same letter?

Chiochan · 26/10/2019 18:49

I diden't notice how the chairs voted. (I was totally distracted by a woman who had walked out when people were speaking in favour of the motion muttering 'transphobia', who then, when hands were up being counted, was making a huge show of, ostensively counting the votes, but was actually confusing the person who had actually been asked to count the votes. tbf I think she was making a play to get the votes in favour undercounted. I dont think she succeded).

RadicalStitch · 26/10/2019 19:00

@Charley50 yesGrin
I sent her a statement from Miranda Yardley saying the word 'transexual' is important and not outdated.

RadicalStitch · 26/10/2019 19:01

@Chiochan it was bonkers wasn't it?! Halloween Confused

Charley50 · 26/10/2019 19:05

@RadicalStitch - tbh I don't know why I'm being so kind to CW right now (aka sitting on the fence) .. I was so disappointed when I got her reply at the time.
