It's cold and rainy and I want cheering up. Can women post me their favourite feminist quotes? Emmeline Pankhurst is somewhat of a goldmine.

Trust in God - she will provide

What do you think women?

Well, it was said about rather than by a woman: Senator Elizabeth Warren, when she would not keep quiet when the menfolk wanted her to.

"Nevertheless, she persisted . . ." Damned right she did and does.

“I think every woman in our culture is a feminist. They may refuse to articulate it, but if you were to take any woman back 40 years and say, ‘Is this a world you want to live in?’, they would say ‘No.’”

Helen Mirren

Not written about feminism, but I love Maya Angelou and this seems incredibly on point to me:

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
’Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
’Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

@teawamutu - that is one of the most powerful poems ever written.

I love teaching it. You can't read it without feeling better, stronger, happier. It's magical in its powers. I once saw her live on stage and she exuded that same incredible energy of self love and self-confidence. It radiated out of her. I've never been in anyone's presence as uplifting and transforming as hers.

What is your favourite feminist quote?
Hypatia415 · 13/10/2019 16:16

Don't know if it's strictly a feminist quote, but Margeret Meads quotes have always stuck with me.

From a MN perspective "Children must be taught how to think, not what to think" is a classic, but I also love:

"Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
