It's cold and rainy and I want cheering up. Can women post me their favourite feminist quotes? Emmeline Pankhurst is somewhat of a goldmine.

All men are potential rapists.
Susan Brownmiller

I like this quote because it is so misused and misunderstood - and because Against Our Will really stands up in its writing and analysis. It's not saying male sexuality is inherently violent, or that all men ARE rapists. What its saying is that rape happens with a penis, and that women cannot tell which people with penises are going to rape them. That all women have to take this into account in their daily lives, and there isn't a way out of it.

BeMoreMagdalen · 10/10/2019 22:53

Personally I am rather fond of the phrase 'Women's Liberation'. It encapsulates what feminism is for me - it mentions the word women first, and it doesn't piss about with cock-eyed notions of 'equality' or 'equity', it just straight up says 'liberation' which means to set free from the shackles which hold women as a class down in an ingrained culture designed for the comfort and benefit of men. I don't want us to be equal with the class that controls, exploits, rapes, beats, murders us. I want to be free from all of those things.

But I also love this. I saw it on Twitter by a poster Ani/Anna? Not sure where it originated (with her or elsewhere).

Well behaved women rarely make history.

Don’t know where it’s from, just strikes a chord with me and inspires me to never bite my tongue or be passive just for an ‘easy life’ as my Nan said me and my sister should. Obviously she was from a different generation and having 4 boys herself plus only having brothers, I imagine much of her experiences sadly involved being quiet and biting her lip as self preservation.

WickedLemon · 10/10/2019 23:09

I’m not going to keep quiet just because some people might get a bit upset. I’m 74. I don’t give a fuck any more

Remember; resist, do not comply - Andrea Dworkin

Plus her 1983 "I want a twenty four hour truce during which there is no rape" speech.

Plus almost all of anything she ever published or said in public, quite frankly Grin

Feminism is the radical notion that women are people
Cheris Kramarae

So, so true.

HugsAreMyDrugs · 11/10/2019 00:49

Feminism is the radical idea that a woman's safety is more important than a man's feelings.

“Behind every successful man is a surprised woman.”

Not sure what that’s intended to mean. Could a wise MN decode that please.

I think I know, but 🤔 sure.

Boiledeggandtoast · 11/10/2019 07:53

I thought it was Voltaire who said "Behind every successful man stands a surprised mother-in-law".

(I cut this out of The Guardian some years ago and it is stuck on my fridge.)

Also from The Guardian on my fridge..

"At the worst, a house unkempt cannot be so distressing as a life unlived." Rose Macaulay

milliefiori · 11/10/2019 08:12

@BolloxtoGender - I think the point of that quote is that the woman never thought he was that good at anything but supported him and fostered his career (at the expense of her own) and watched as he shot to fame, belatedly thinking: shit, that could have been me if I'd only had the self confidence; my talent/expertise/insight/skill was way ahead of his when we started. But he had the self belief and he got full support from a wife.

I think self-confidence is a Feminist issue.

imjustanerd · 11/10/2019 08:21

I have nothing to add to this amazing list of feminist quotes other than I wish I had heard them when I was a teenager, I think certain aspects of my life would have been very different if I had.

milliefiori · 11/10/2019 08:24

I love: What would the mediocre man do? It is so empowering.

milliefiori · 11/10/2019 08:26

@BeMoreMagdalen - great post 10th Oct 22.53.04.
